  1. Hybrid electronic health records

Pedrosa, Tiago; Lopes, Rui Pedro; Santos, João C.; Costa, Carlos; Oliveira, José Luís
The research related with digital health records has been a hot topic since the last two decades, producing diverse results, particularly in two main types – Electronic Health Records and Personal Health Records. With the current wider citizen mobility, the liberalization of health care providing, as well as alternative medicine, elderly care and remote patient monitoring, new challenges had emerged. These brought more actors to the scene that can belong to different healthcare networks, private or public sector even from different countries. For creating a true patient-centric electronic health record, those actors need to collaborate in the creation and maintenance...

  2. On the use of OpenEHR in a portable PHR

Santos, Cândido; Pedrosa, Tiago; Costa, Carlos; Oliveira, José Luís
Quality medical acts rely on patient medical information. With paper records, the responsibility of gathering the disparate information and making it available to the caregivers, falls exclusively upon the patient. This still is, to great extent, the case with electronic health documents. The consensus is that the advantages of patient involvement in his own health are numerous. With the advent of recent technologies and their deployment in healthcare, new ways of involving the patient and making him an active part of his own health are possible. Electronic Health Records (EHR) and specially Personal Health Records (PHR) are important tools for...

Alves, Paulo; Miranda, Luísa; Morais, Carlos; Alves, Evandro

  6. A new multi-modal database for developing speech recognition systems for an assistive technology application

    Moura, A.; Freitas, D.; Pera, V.
In this paper we report on the acquisition and content of a new database intended for developing audio-visual speech recognition systems. This database supports a speaker dependent continuous speech recognition task, based on a small vocabulary, and was captured in the European Portuguese language. Along with the collected multi-modal speech materials, the respective orthographic transcription and time-alignment files are supplied. The package also includes data on stochastic language models and the generative grammar associated to the collected spoken sentences. The application addressed by this database, which consists of voice control of a basic scientific calculator, has the particularity of being designed for a person with a specific motor impairment,...

  8. Applying action research in the adoption of information systems security policies

Lopes, Isabel Maria; Sá-Soares, Filipe de
Information Systems Security (ISS) is a critical issue for a wide range of organizations. This paper focuses on organizations belonging to a particular sector, namely Local Public Administration, where public and personal information must be protected by those in charge, and where there must be a concern to view security as a priority. There are several measures which can be implemented in order to ensure the effective protection of information assets, among which stands out the adoption of ISS policies. A recent census concluded that among the 308 Town Councils in Portugal, only 38 indicated to have an ISS policy....

  9. Experimental software engineering in educational context

Alves, Luís M.; Machado, Ricardo J.; Ribeiro, Pedro
Empirical studies are important in software engineering to evaluate new tools, techniques, methods and technologies in a structured way before they are introduced in the industrial (real) software process. Within this PhD thesis we will develop a framework of a consistent process for involving students as subjects of empirical studies of software engineering. In concrete, our experiences with software development teams composed of students will analyze how RUP (Rational Unified Process) processes can be compliant with the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration), namely in the context of MLs (maturity levels) 2 and 3. Additionally, we will also analyze the influence of project management tools...

  10. Information society in the high hills

Pereira, João Paulo; Dias, Adriana; Nunes, Victor; Teixeira, Filipa

  11. Analyzing the behavior of top spam botnets

Silva, Rui; Rodrigues, Nuno G.; Salvador, Paulo; Nogueira, António Manuel
Botnets became the preferred platform for launching attacks and committing fraud on enterprise networks and the Internet itself. Characterizing existing Botnets will help to coordinate and develop new technologies to face this serious security threat. Several approaches can be taken to study this phenomenon: analyze its source code, which can be a hard task mainly due to license restrictions; study the control mechanism, particularly the activity of its Command and Control server(s); study its behavior, by measuring real traffic and collecting relevant statistics. In this work, we have installed some of the most popular spam Botnets, capturing the originated traffic...

  12. Gathering and managing complementary diagnostic tests

Santos, J.C.; Pedrosa, Tiago; Costa, Carlos; Oliveira, J.L.
Personal health information is constituted in its greatest part by complementary diagnostic tests which are an important medical aid. This information is generated dispersedly because the patient seeks medical care in many different places over his lifetime. Access to a comprehensive set of a patient’s health information is a challenge. It revolves around the patient so any managing scheme must be patient-centric. We took a pragmatic approach to this problem and developed a software standalone platform for secure personal health information storage, namely complementary diagnostic tests, on a portable device for mobility. Simplicity and ease of use were main objectives....

  13. Modelling a portable personal health record

Santos, João C.; Pedrosa, Tiago; Costa, Carlos; Oliveira, José Luís
Active and responsible involvement of patients in their own health is accepted as an important contribution towards an increased quality of health services in general. Management of Personal Health Information by the patient can play an important role in the improvement in quality of the information available to health care professionals and as a means of patient involvement. Electronic Health Records are a means of storing this kind of information but their management usually falls under the responsibility of an institution and not on the patient himself. A Personal Health Record under the direct control and management of the patient...

  14. Graphical simulation of numerical algorithms : an approach based on code instrumentation and Java technologies

Balsa, Carlos; Alves, Luís M.; Pereira, Maria João; Rodrigues, Pedro; Lopes, Rui Pedro
We want to create a working tool for mathematics teachers and a corresponding learning tool for students, namely a graphical simulator of mathematical algorithms (GraSMa). To achieve it we try two different strategies. We started by annotate manually the original algorithm with inspector functions. Now we are testing a new approach that aims to automatically annotate the original code with inspector functions. To achieve this we are developing a language translator module that enables to comment automatically any code written in Octave language. The run of the annotated code gated by one of these two ways, records in a XML...

A maioria dos alunos e dos professores classifica os seus conhecimentos como conhecimentos intermédios. De um modo geral, os conhecimentos...

  17. Efficient partitioning strategies for distributed web crawling

Exposto, José; Macedo, Joaquim; Pina, António; Alves, Albano; Rufino, José
This paper presents a multi-objective approach toWeb space partitioning, aimed to improve distributed crawling efficiency. The in- vestigation is supported by the construction of two different weighted graphs. The first is used to model the topological communication infras- tructure between crawlers and Web servers and the second is used to represent the amount of link connections between servers’ pages. The values of the graph edges represent, respectively, computed RTTs and pages links between nodes. The two graphs are further combined, using a multi-objective partition- ing algorithm, to support Web space partitioning and load allocation for an adaptable number of geographical distributed crawlers. Partitioning strategies were evaluated by varying the number of...

  19. SVS, BORS, SVSi: three strategies to relate problem and program domains

Berón, Mario; Pereira, Maria João; Oliveira, Nuno; Cruz, Daniela
Program Comprehension is improved if: i) the Problem and Program Domains can be related, and ii) this relation is shown in a suitable way to the programmer. Currently, there are few strategies for reaching this important goal because it is not easy to: i) Identify meaningful representations of the problem and program domains; and ii) Define a linking procedure. This poster describes three strategies to overcome the difficulties mentioned above. These strategies use static and dynamic information and traditional compilation techniques for relating both domains.

  20. Influence of synchronized domain visualizations on program comprehension

Oliveira, Nuno; Pereira, Maria João; Cruz, Daniela; Berón, Mario
An effective program comprehension is reached when it is possible to view and relate what happens when the program is executed, synchronized with its effects in the real world concepts. This enables the interconnection of program’s meaning at both problem and program domains. To sustain this statement we need (i) to develop a tool which provides and synchronizes views at both domains, and (ii) to perform an experiment to measure the actual impact of this approach. So, in this working session we aim at discussing the benefits of providing synchronized domain visualizations. We also envisage to discuss the preparation and conduction of appropriate...
