    The Comprehensive Historical Upper-Air Network (CHUAN version 1.7), which was substantially extended in 2013, and the Integrated Global Radiosonde Archive (IGRA) are the most important collections of upper-air measurements taken before 1958. CHUAN (tracked) balloon data start in 1900, with higher numbers from the late 1920s onward, whereas IGRA data start in 1937. However, a substantial fraction of those measurements have not been taken at synoptic times (preferably 00:00 or 12:00 GMT) and on altitude levels instead of standard pressure levels.   11. Effects of Ocean Acidification on calcification and biochemical balance of the Mediterranean red coral Corallium rubrum

    We evaluated the effects of low pH on Corallium rubrum from aquaria experiments. Several colonies of C. rubrum were long-term maintained for 314 days in aquaria at two different pH levels (8.10 and 7.81, pHT). Calcification rate, spicule morphology, major biochemical constituents (protein, carbohydrates and lipids) and fatty acids composition were measured periodically. Exposure to lower pH conditions caused a significant decrease in the skeletal growth rate in comparison to the control treatment.     To study long-term variations in surface ocean d13C, we investigated coral skeletal d13C records of 20 colonies of the shallow-water coral Porites spp. from the northern Gulf of Aqaba and the northern Red Sea. The coral colonies represent different water depths, a wide range of different periods (Last Interglacial, Holocene, the last centuries, the last decades), and various growth rates. Records from modern and fossil corals show irregular seasonal cycles, attributed mainly to the seasonal cycle of light.   15. Geochemistry of tephra from the Taupo Volcanic Zone

    The Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ), central North Island, New Zealand, is the most frequently active Quaternary rhyolitic system in the world. Silicic tephras recovered from Ocean Drilling Programme Site 1123 (41°47.16'S, 171°29.94'W; 3290 m water depth) in the southwest Pacific Ocean provide a well-dated record of explosive TVZ volcanism since ~1.65 Ma. We present major, minor and trace element data for 70 Quaternary tephra layers from Site 1123 determined by electron probe microanalysis (1314 analyses) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (654 analyses).   18. Chemical composition of upper Cenozoic at DSDP Leg 70 Holes

    The hydrothermal deposits that we analyzed from Leg 70 are composed of ferruginous green clays and fragments of manganese-hydroxide crust. Data from X-ray diffraction, IR-spectroscopy, electron diffraction, and chemical analyses indicate that the hydrothermal green clays are composed of disordered mixed-layer phases of celadonite-nontronite. Electron diffraction shows that the parameters of the unit cells and the degree of three-dimensional ordering of mixed-layer phases with 80% celadonite interlayers are very close to Fe-micas of polymorphic modification IM-celadonite.
