    Nine hydrographic cruises were performed on the Gulf of Lion continental margin between June 1993 and July 1996. These observations are analysed to quantify the fluxes of particulate matter and organic carbon transported along the slope by the Northern Current and to characterise their seasonal variability. Concentration of particulate matter and organic carbon are derived from light-transmission data and water sample analyses. The circulation is estimated from the geostrophic current field.   3. Tephrostratigraphy and major element concentrations in glass shards of sediment core MD90-917

    A detailed tephrostratigraphy supported by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14C dating and isotopic and geochemical analyses has been carried out for a deep-sea core collected from the Southern Adriatic Sea, which spans the last 18 14C kyr. Fourteen ash layers have been recognized in the marine core and the origin was determined by comparing their age and geochemistry with tephra detected in terrestrial deposits. The geochemical signatures of marine ash layers indicate a prevailing Campanian and subordinate Etnean and Eolian provenances.     Siliciclastic turbidites represent huge volumes of sediments, which are of particular significance for (1) petroleum researchers, interested in their potential as oil reservoirs and (2) sedimentologists, who aim at understanding sediment transport processes from continent to deep-basins. An important challenge when studying marine turbidites has been to establish a reliable chronology for the deposits. Indeed, conventional marine proxies applied to hemipelagic sediments are often unreliable in detrital clays. In siliciclastic turbidites, those proxies can be used only in hemipelagic intervals, providing a poor constraint on their chronology.     A study of the C37 alkenone compositions in suspended particulate matter in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea has shown a correspondence between Uk'37 and sea surface temperature that significantly deviates from the general equation regularly observed in most marine world areas (Müller et al., 1998, doi:10.1016/S0016-7037(98)00097-0). However, the temperatures measured in the core top sediments using the general equation are in agreement with the annual average water column temperatures between 0-40 m depth.     Surface sediment was sampled at two bathyal sites in the southwestern Gulf of Lions in the western Mediterranean Sea in February and August 1997 to study the distribution and microhabitat of living (Rose Bengal stained) deep sea benthic foraminifera. Both standing stock and diversity of the faunas, and the microhabitat of distinct species mirror the trophic situation and the depth of the oxidised layer at the different sites.
