  3. Total sediment thickness grid of the Southern Pacific Ocean off West Antarctica, links to NetCDF files

Wobbe, Florian; Lindeque, Ansa; Gohl, Karsten
Paleotopographic models of the West Antarctic margin, which are essential for robust simulations of paleoclimate scenarios, lack information on sediment thickness and geodynamic conditions, resulting in large uncertainties. A new total sediment thickness grid spanning the Ross Sea-Amundsen Sea-Bellingshausen Sea basins is presented and is based on all the available seismic reflection, borehole, and gravity modeling data offshore West Antarctica. This grid was combined with NGDC's global 5 arc minute grid of ocean sediment thickness (Whittaker et al., 2013, doi:10.1002/ggge.20181) and extends the NGDC grid further to the south. Sediment thickness along the West Antarctic margin tends to be 3-4...

The International Bathymetric Chart of the Southern Ocean (IBCSO) Version 1.0 is a new digital bathymetric model (DBM) portraying the seafloor of the circum-Antarctic waters south of 60° S. IBCSO is a regional mapping project of the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO). IBCSO Version 1.0 DBM has been compiled from all available bathymetric data collectively gathered by more than 30 institutions from 15 countries. These data include multibeam and single beam echo soundings, digitized depths from nautical charts, regional bathymetric gridded compilations, and predicted bathymetry. Specific gridding techniques were applied to compile the DBM from the bathymetric data...

  9. Tab. 2+3: The results of the vertical component of tides

    Kobarg, Wolfgang; Lippmann, Erich
Part of the geophysical work at the German Georg von Neumayer Station is the recording of the tidal movement of the Ekström Ice Shelf. Measurements are performed with an earthtide gravity meter for the vertical component of the movement and two simple tiltmeters for the horizontal components. Gravity measurements were done continuously during the 1984/85 winter season at the observatory of the Georg von Neumayer Station. Tilt measurements were carried out at the station and at three locations on an ice-rise at about 10 km distance from the station. Gravity measurements provide the tidal movements of the ice shelf, which...

  17. Audio record of a 'singing iceberg' from the Weddell Sea, Antarctica

Müller, Christian; Schlindwein, Vera; Eckstaller, Alfons; Miller, Heinz
Sustained harmonic tremor signals were recorded by the seismographs of the German Neumayer Base seismological network in western Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. These tremor episodes, lasting up to 16 hours, were recorded up to 820 kilometers from the source. Their spectra show narrow peaks with fundamental frequencies ranging from 0.5 to 6 hertz, more than 30 integer harmonic overtones, and frequency gliding, resembling volcanic tremor. Frequency-wave number analysis suggested a moving source, which was recognized as iceberg B-09A traveling along the coast of eastern Antarctica. The most probable tremor sources are fluid-flow-induced vibrations inside the iceberg's tunnel/crevasse systems.
