ESTUDO GERAL é a designação do repositório digital da produção científica da Universidade de Coimbra, com o objectivo de divulgar conteúdos digitais de natureza científica de autores ligados à Universidade de Coimbra. A sua criação insere-se no movimento de Acesso Livre à Literatura científica (Open Access), ao qual o Conselho de Reitores das Universidades Portuguesas aderiu em 2006 e que a Universidade de Coimbra subscreveu. À semelhança de outras grandes universidades nacionais e internacionais, a UC tem o maior interesse em aumentar a sua presença na rede informática mundial, sendo cada vez mais - e também por essa via - um emissor de conhecimento e cultura.

  1. Tra-la-lyrics: an approach to generate text based on rhythm

    This paper is about an ongoing project, Tra-la-Lyrics which aims to create a computer program capable of gen- erating lyrics for given melodies. As a preliminary phase, the correlations between words and rhythm in a song’s lyrics was studied and some heuristics were achieved. Al- gorithms for syllabic division and syllabic stress identifi- cation on a word were implemented. A method for cal- culating the strength of each beat of a melody was also used. The actual system’s architecture is described. To get the contents of the lyrics we’ve used a relational database where we could find not only the words, but also their grammatical category and some morphological related at- tributes....

  2. The WMPI Architecture for Dynamic Environments and Simultaneous Multiple Devices

    WMPI was originally based on the MPICH implementation. MPICH’s architecture, though well fitted for portability and performance, is not flexible enough to allow the implementation of the new functionality introduced in the MPI-2 standard. Due to this difficulty, we decided to develop a new architecture from scratch. This architecture introduces new concepts that allow for the dynamic creation and termination of processes as well as the usage of simultaneous multiple devices. The new architecture was designed to be completely thread safe and to allow a rapid development of libraries for any communication medium. This paper describes the reasons for developing thr new architecture and presents the implemented solutions to achieve the proposed goals.

  3. Implementing MPI-2 Extended Collective Operations

    This paper describes a first approach to implement MPI-2’s Extended Collective Operations. We aimed to ascertain the feasibility and effectiveness of such a project based on existing algorithms. The focus is on the intercommunicator operations, as these represent the main extension of the MPI-2 standard on the MPI-1 collective operations. We expose the algorithms, key features and some performance results. The implementation was done on top of WMPI and honors the MPICH layering, therefore the algorithms can be easily incorporated into other MPICH based MPI implementations.

  4. Implementing MPI’s One-Sided Communications for WMPI

    One-sided Communications is one of the extensions to MPI set out in the MPI-2 standard. We present here a thread-based implementation of One-sided Communications written for WMPI, an existing Windows implementation of MPI written at the Universidade de Coimbra. This is a major step towards WMPI incorporating the MPI-2 standard, with the further bene t of contributing to the thread safety of WMPI. We discuss the main design decisions associated with the implementation and consider further research work required in this area to improve both the existing implementation and to assess other implementations of One-sided Communications.

  5. WMPI Message Passing Interface for Win32 Clusters

    This paper describes WMPI, the first full implementation of the Message Passing Interface standard (MPI) for clusters of Microsoft's Windows platforms (Win32). Its internal architecture and user interface, and some performance test results (for release v1.1), that evaluates how much of the total underlying system capacity for communication is delivered to the MPI based parallel applications, are presented.   6. Onto.PT: Automatic Construction of a Lexical Ontology for Portuguese

    This ongoing research presents an alternative to the man- ual creation of lexical resources and proposes an approach towards the automatic construction of a lexical ontology for Portuguese. Tex- tual sources are exploited in order to obtain a lexical network based on terms and, after clustering and mapping, a wordnet-like lexical on- tology is created. At the end of the paper, current results are shown.
