    Funka Bay is the main nursery ground of the Japanese Pacific population of walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus. To better understand how hydrographic and biological conditions are related to the survival of this population during the early life stages, hydrographic observations and field samplings have been conducted in Funka Bay since 1991 aboard the T/S Usio-Maru, Faculty of Fisheries, Hokkkaido University. Data have been collected on hydrographic conditions and the distributions of larval pollock and copepod nauplii(larval prey).     We conducted SCUBA-based surveys of the larval and juvenile fish fauna in reef and seaweed areas in the inshore region of Usujiri, Hakodate, along the Pacific coast of southern Hokkaido, Japan, from 2011 to 2015. A total of 97 species in 9 orders and 33 families were identified based on morphological observations and DNA barcoding analyses of the Cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) gene.     From 2012 to 2014 intertidal and coastal fishes were collected while SCUBA diving at Ohata, Kawauchi, Asizaki and Wakinosawa in the Shimokita Peninsula, Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan. During these surveys, 21 families, 43 genera and 51 species were collected and 7 families 7 genera and 7 species were photographed.   10. Taxonomy of Mesopelagic Fishes Collected around the Ogasawara Islands by the T/S Oshoro-Maru

    A taxonomic examination of 3,108 specimens of mesopelagic fishes, collected around the Ogasawara Islands in December 2010 by a beam trawl net operated from the T/S Oshoro-maru, Hokkaido University, Japan, resulted in the recognition of 99 species representing 34 families and 65 genera. Descriptions are provided for all species, two of them〔 a stomiid Eustomias braueri Zugmayer, 1911 and linophrynid Haplophryne mollis (Brauer, 1902)〕 being new records for Japan. This work is achieved with machines and by hand. There have been existed manual labor and dangerous operations.   12. Comparative anatomy and phylogenetic systematics of the family Uranoscopidae (Actinopterygii: Perciformes)

    The anatomy of the family Uranoscopidae including osteological and mycological features is examined and described in details based on eight genera and 32 uranoscopid species. As results of anatomy and phylogenetic analysis, the monophyly of the family is reconfirmed to be strongly supported by 59 synapomorphies (plus 11 according to ACCTRAN). The phylogenetic relationships of uranoscopids were inferred from the morphological characters in 113 transformation series. Pleuroscopus and Xenocephalus, having a sister relationship, are branched off initially from remaining members, and monophyletic Kathetostoma is branched off.   13. Phylogenetic relationships of the suborder Notacanthoidei (Teleostei: Albuliformes) reassessed from osteological characters, with a proposed new classification

    The phylogenetic relationships of Notacanthoidei were reassessed on the basis of osteological characters and the classification of the suborder reconstructed on the basis of inferred relationships. The monophyly of the suborder is supported by two synapomorphies commonly recognized in all included genera. The phylogenetic analysis also revealed support for the suborder by five synapomorphies characterized by reversals or character transformations. In addition, notacanthoids share five apomorphies, present also in Anguilliformes, which may prove to be valid synapomorphies for the former.     Timing of breeding in terrestrial birds has been progressed with the global warming trend during recent decades. This paper reviewed the inter-annual trends of the timing of breeding in seabirds and potential mechanisms driving these changes. Their timing of breeding was progressed in 3 of 4 cases in the Arctic at the rates of 0.3-1.5 d/year, but it was delayed in 6 of 10 cases in the Antarctic at slower rates (<0.1 d/year).     Recent advances in studies on zooplankton ecology in the Oyashio region were reviewed. In this review, the following three topics were argued : i) ecosystem structure in the region, ii) inter-annual changes in zooplankton biomass and iii) optical analysis on zooplankton samples. Annual mean biomass in the Oyashio region was estimated to be 23 g C m-2 and was dominated by mesozooplankton (34%), followed by phytoplankton (28%), heterotrophic bacteria (15%) and microzooplankton (14%).
