    "Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are bioplastics that can replace conventional petroleum derived products in various applications. One of the major barriers for their widespread introduction in the market is the higher production costs when compared with their petrochemical counterparts. In this work, a process was successfully implemented with high productivity based on wheat straw, a cheap and readily available agricultural residue, as raw material. The strain Burkholderia sacchari DSM 17165 which is able to metabolize glucose, xylose and arabinose, the main sugars present in wheat straw hydrolysates (WSH), was used.   3. Energy and quality of service management in wireless multimedia sensor networks

    Sensor networks are composed of resource constrained nodes that capture data from the environment, preprocess it and then transmit it to a sink node. This paper presents a scenario for monitoring an electricity distribution network, an energy analysis of the used sensor nodes and an intelligent energy and quality of service (QoS) manager. This manager continuously adapts the provided QoS according to the energy level of the nodes.

  6. Fault location in an electrical energy distribution infrastructure with a wireless sensor network

    This paper presents a detailed analysis of the applicability of wireless systems in the localization of faults in the energy distribution network. The hardware and software architectures of the envisaged sensor solution will also be described and finally, the integration of this system into Smart Grids will be discussed in terms of automatic fault analysis.   7. A wireless sensor and actuator network for improving the electrical power grid dependability

    This paper presents an overview of a Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network (WSAN) used to monitor an electrical power grid distribution infrastructure. The WSAN employs appropriate sensors to monitor key grid components, integrating both safety and security services, which improve the grid distribution dependability. The supported applications include, among others, video surveillance of remote secondary substations, which imposes special requirements from the point of view of quality of service and reliability. The paper presents the hardware and software architecture of the system together with performance results.
