    A highly conserved region of 21 amino acids flanked by cysteine residues, contained within a larger repeated domain, has been proposed to be the antibody-binding site in the ovarian cancer biomarker CA125 (MUC16). In this study solid-phase peptide synthesis with Fmoc protection chemistry was used to assemble a 21-mer peptide corresponding to the most frequently occurring antibody binding sequence in CA125.   3. Short-chain carboxylic acids from gray catbird (Dumetella carolinensis) uropygial secretions vary with testosterone levels and photoperiod


    The uropygial gland of birds produces secretions that are important in maintaining the health and structural integrity of feathers. Non-volatile components of uropygial secretions are believed to serve a number of functions including waterproofing and conditioning the feathers. Volatile components have been characterized in fewer species, but are particularly interesting because of their potential importance in olfactory interactions within and across species.     Isoprene is the precursor for number of alcohol, organosulfate, and organonitrate species observed in ambient secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Recent laboratory and field work has suggested that isoprene-derived epoxides may be crucial intermediates that can explain the existence of these compounds in SOA. To confirm this hypothesis, the specific hydroxy epoxides observed in gas phase isoprene photooxidation experiments (as well as several other related species) were synthesized and the bulk phase aqueous reactions of these species in the presence of sulfate and nitrate were studied via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques.   6. Investigation of the role of bicyclic peroxy radicals in the oxidation mechanism of toluene


    The products of the primary OH-initiated oxidation of toluene were investigated using the turbulent flow chemical ionization mass spectrometry technique under different oxygen, NO, and initial OH radical concentrations as well as a range of total pressures. The bicyclic peroxy radical intermediate, a key proposed intermediate species in the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) for the atmospheric oxidation of toluene, was detected for the first time.   7. Kinetics of the hydrolysis of atmospherically relevant isoprene-derived hydroxy epoxides


    Isoprene (the most abundant nonmethane hydrocarbon emitted into the atmosphere) is known to undergo oxidation to 2-methyl-1,2,3,4-butanetetraol, a hydrophilic compound present in secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in the atmosphere. Recent laboratory work has shown that gas phase hydroxy epoxides are produced in the low NOx photooxidation of isoprene and that these epoxides are likely to undergo efficient acid-catalyzed hydrolysis on SOA to 2-methyl-1,2,3,4-butanetetraol at typical SOA acidities.   8. Monsoon control of effective discharge, Yunnan and Tibet


    Analysis of suspended sediment transport data for rivers in Yunnan and Tibet shows that monsoon flows control effective discharge. We calculate effective discharge, defined as the discharge that transports the most sediment, for 44 stations for which there is at least one complete year of daily suspended sediment concentration and mean daily discharge data, and find that the effective discharge is approximately the mean monsoon discharge for all stations.     Small, irregular terraces on hillslopes, or terracettes, are common landscape features throughout west central China. Despite their prevalence, there is limited understanding of the nature of these topographic features, the processes that form them, and the role humans played in their formation. We used an interdisciplinary approach to investigate the geology, ecology, and cultural history of terracette development within Jiuzhaigou National Park, Sichuan Province, China.     Global data suggest that erosion rates variously scale with steepness or climate forcing (precipitation or glacial excavation), but the relative influence of these factors has proven difficult to assess without comparisons from a single location. A new suite of detrital ^1^0Be data from the Three Rivers Region, SE Tibet is used to examine the relative importance of rainfall and relief in predicting patterns of erosion rates across a region with a strong gradient in exhumation.     Farmers of the Nuosu Yi ethnic group in the Upper Baiwu watershed report reductions in the availability of local forest resources. A team of interdisciplinary scientists worked in partnership with this community to assess the type and extent of social-ecological change in the watershed and to identify key drivers of those changes.   14. Core-shell magnetic morphology of structurally uniform magnetite nanoparticles


    A new development in small-angle neutron scattering with polarization analysis allows us to directly extract the average spatial distributions of magnetic moments and their correlations with three-dimensional directional sensitivity in any magnetic field. Applied to a collection of spherical magnetite nanoparticles 9.0 nm in diameter, this enhanced method reveals uniformly canted, magnetically active shells in a nominally saturating field of 1.2 T. The shell thickness depends on temperature, and it disappears altogether when the external field is removed, confirming that these canted nanoparticle shells are magnetic, rather than structural, in origin.

  15. The incidence of the land use regulatory tax


    Land use regulation has been found to impose a substantial tax on housing within select U.S. metropolitan areas. In this article, we develop hypotheses regarding the incidence of this tax by income class and racial group within these areas. Parcel-level data from Miami-Dade County, Florida, are used to test our hypotheses. We find that, while the tax rises with a household's permanent income, this rise is less than proportional, making it a regressive tax.   16. Internal magnetic structure of magnetite nanoparticles at low temperature


    Small-angle neutron scattering with polarization analysis reveals that Fe3O4 nanoparticles with 90 Å diameters have ferrimagnetic moments significantly reduced from that of bulk Fe3O4 at 10 K, nominal saturation. Combined with previous results for an equivalent applied field at 200 K, a core-disordered shell picture of a spatially reduced ferrimagnetic core emerges, even well below the bulk blocking temperature. Zero-field cooling suggests that this magnetic morphology may be intrinsic to the nanoparticle, rather than field induced, at 10 K.

  17. Ion microprobe analysis of oxygen isotopes in garnets of complex chemistry


    Accurate ion microprobe analysis of oxygen isotope ratios in garnet is possible if appropriate standards are employed to correct for instrumental bias, a component of which depends on the cation chemistry of the analyzed mineral. In this study, 26 garnet standards (including 14 new standards) that span the compositional range of pyrope, almandine, grossular, spessartine, and andradite were analyzed repeatedly by ion microprobe to develop a new method of correcting for instrumental bias in garnets.
