E-Tools in Building Environment Technical Education and Training - Alfredo Soeiro
The project is motivated by the increasing number of complex works of rehabilitation of buildings that require rapid and systematic access to specific knowledge. The approach is to facilitate access to proper knowledge through collaborative business networks formed by companies and research and development partners. This project aims at: (a) providing a learning community of fundamental knowledge and an organization of tacit knowledge of SMEs and (b) allowing closer business collaboration between SMEs and RDs. The project plans to develop solutions based on information technology and communication that are adequate for SMEs, including knowledge sharing and training for engineers.
Fast 3D reconstruction of the spine from biplanar radiographs using a deformable articulated model - Daniel Cardoso de Moura; Jonathan Boisvert; Jorge G. Barbosa; Hubert Labelle; João Manuel R. S. Tavares
This paper proposes a novel method for fast 3D reconstructions of the scoliotic spine from two planar radiographs. The method uses a statistical model of the shape of the spine for computing the 3D reconstruction that best matches the user input (about 7 control points per radiograph). In addition, the spine was modelled as an articulated structure to take advantage of the dependencies between adjacent vertebrae in terms of location, orientation and shape.
The accuracy of the method was assessed for a total of 30 patients with mild to severe scoliosis (Cobb angle [22°, 70°]) by comparison with a previous validated...
Will high speed trains change Portuguese railway noise? - António P. O. Carvalho; Pedro D. S. Oliveira
This paper presents the in situ evaluation of noise from railway traffic on a modernized section of the Portuguese railway network. The measurements include noise spectra for four types of Portuguese rolling stock in terms of their maximum Transit Exposure Level (TEL), equivalent Sound Pressure Level and frequency content. The obtained data allows for a noise characterization of the various types of Portuguese trains and can be used in the validation of numerical noise prediction models. Due to the foreseen introduction of high speed railways in Portugal an analysis is done to check how the railway noise will change in...
From Portugal to Florida, and the Newman award - Antonio P. Carvalho
I was 31 years-old when, in 1991, I left the University of Porto to study architectural acoustics at the University of Florida with Professor Gary W. Siebein. In 1994, I finished my Ph.D., I got the Robert Bradford Newman Award, and my career changed. In fact, that 1994 would be the BIG BANG of my future life. Personally, academically, and scientifically, my Universe blew up and began expanding.
What I learned and what I taught in the 17 years after that (and what the architectural acoustics changed in Portugal and Southern Europe) is the subject of this paper.
Acoustical characterization of the underground chapels of the new Holy Trinity church in the Fatima shrine, Portugal - António P. O. Carvalho; Bruno F. O. Nascimento
This paper presents the interior acoustic characterization of the Chapels of Reconciliation, underground chapels of the new Holy Trinity church in Fatima, Portugal. The results of in situ measurements are presented regarding Reverberation Time, RASTI (with and without the use of sound reinforcement system), sound levels and NC of the HVAC equipment and airborne sound insulation indexes between chapels. The results are compared with Portuguese Catholic churches of similar volume and the subjective opinion of users of these chapels is analyzed.
Acoustical characterization of the central mosque of Lisbon - António P. O. Carvalho; Carina P. T. Freitas
This paper presents the acoustical characterization of the Central Mosque of Lisbon. In situ measurements were done regarding Reverberation Time, RASTI and background noise associated with traffic. The analysis of the results is shown as a comparison with results in other mosques and Catholic churches, which have a similar volume.
"Paint" with powdered cork with optimized acoustical behavior - Antonio P. O. Carvalho; Daniela J. D. Maio; Francisco J. C. X. Carvalho
This paper presents the analysis of a new product ("paint") with the incorporation of powdered cork to optimize its acoustic performance. Tests were performed in a reverberation room to measure the variation on the sound absorption coefficient values of an existing standard aqueous paint by the introduction of different amounts of powdered cork and also to compare these results with a named "acoustic paint" already available in the market. The "paint" tests were performed on two different base supports (wood and metal) and analyzed with different percentages of added powdered cork and different thicknesses.
