Examines the new knowledge, skills, and management strategies needed to tackle the special problems of collection development in a hybrid library. Acquisition of digital materials brings hidden costs, which must be compared, in choosing suppliers. Hundreds of thousands of electronic texts are freely available on the internet, and many of them are texts which are used in colleges and universities in the UK. A report was commissioned by the JISC E-books Working Group to investigate the following questions:

* Are they of sufficient quality for use in teaching and learning?
* What is required to deploy them in the curriculum?
