  1. Design of cationic lipid nanoparticles for ocular delivery: Development, characterization and cytotoxicity

Fangueiro, JF; Andreani, T; Egea, MA; Garcia, ML; Souto, SB; Silva, AM; Souto, EB
In the present study we have developed lipid nanoparticle (LN) dispersions based on a multiple emulsion technique for encapsulation of hydrophilic drugs or/and proteins by a full factorial design. In order to increase ocular retention time and mucoadhesion by electrostatic attraction, a cationic lipid, namely cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), was added in the lipid matrix of the optimal LN dispersion obtained from the factorial design. There are a limited number of studies reporting the ideal concentration of cationic agents in LN for drug delivery. This paper suggests that the choice of the concentration of a cationic agent is critical when formulating...

  3. Avaliação das Anomalias do Metabolismo da Glicose Após a Gravidez Complicada por Diabetes Gestacional

    Matos, C; Pereira, M
ntroduction: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is associated with an increased risk of maternal Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Our objective was to analyse post-partum reclassification anomalies, and its relation with maternal history, pregnancy data and neonatal outcomes. Methods: Retrospective analysis of women with gestational diabetes between the year 2000 to 2007, aged from 16 to 45 years old; 47.2% had positive familiar history of DM and 9.1% had past history of GDM. Other maternal and gestational characteristics were collected; newborn weight and morbidity and reclassification results were evaluated. Statistical analysis was based on descriptive methods and Spearman correlation, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, Qui-square and...

  6. Diagnosing Schmidt Syndrome in Adolescence

    Costa, M; Martins, S; Mota, F; Marques, O; Antunes, A

  7. Petrified auricular cartilages pointing the diagnosis of post-partum hypopituitarism in an encephalopathic patient

    Machado, A; Lopes, M; Ferreira, C
True ossification of ear auricles is exceptional. We present the first case linking this finding to post-partum hypopituitarism. A 57-year-old female presented with a 2-day history of fever, headache and behavioural disturbances. Brain magnetic resonance imaging was normal. Since cerebral spinal fluid could not be obtained, she was treated empirically for a meningitis. A urinary tract infection was subsequently identified as the cause of fever but when she improved she remained apathetic. At this time petrified auricles were noticed; histological examination revealed true ossification. Endocrinological screening showed partial hypopituitarism and thyroid autoimmune disorder. Initial symptoms could be dated to the...

  8. A marcoprolactinemia: da determinação laboratorial ao seu significado clínico

Matos, C; Pereira, ML; Guimarães, JT
Since prolactin (PRL) (a hormone produced by the anterior pituitary) was first identificated, the existence of hyperprolactinemic syndrome has been recognized. Main symptoms are galactorrhea, oligomenorrhea, amenorrhea and infertility in women and decreased libido and impotence in men. Macroprolactinemia reflects the predominance of circulating forms with reduced bioactivity not associated with typical clinical manifestations of hyperprolactinemia. It is identified by immunoassays commonly used in clinical practice, resulting in hyperprolactinemia. Polyetilenoglycol (PEG) is the most used method that removes PRL from serum. It is likely that the phenomenon of macroprolactinemia is consistently underestimated and unrecognized. Manufacturers of immunoassays for PRL have...

  9. Doença de Graves associada à artrite idiopática juvenil

Marques, VM; Dias de Carvalho, SC; Antunes, AM; Pinho-Marques, OA; Fernandes-Silva, MH; Costa-Vieira, MJ
The authors report the case of a 10-year-old girl with Graves' disease (GD), treated with propylthiouracil, who developed uveitis and polyarticular arthritis, and whose mother also had GD and discoid lupus. The differential diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis that appears in a child with autoimmune thyroid disease managed with antithyroid drugs is discussed.
