1. STRANGE SHADOW IN VAIN MOVEMENTS: IMAGES OF POETIC WRITING IN CAMILO PESSANHA - IZABELA LEAL
The objective of this work is to relate the poetry of Camilo Pessanha to a questioning about the art of poetry itself, analyzing the relationship between the feeling of time and the activity of poetic creation which may be perceived in his work, a relationship which can be established through the title of his only book of poems: Clepsydra. The clepsydra, an object connected to the counting of time attributed to the orators in ancient Greece, points, therefore, to a fusion between time and discourse, allowing us to engage in a reflection on the act of writing.

2. DIEU ET L'ÊTRE HUMAIN: RIVALITÉ OU SOLIDARITÉ? - CARLOS HENRIQUE MENDITTI

3. REVISITING DEPRESSION - ELIANE MENDLOWICZ
The objective of this thesis is to provide a systematic study of the depressive neuroses by reviewing and evaluating the main theoretical psychoanalytic contributions on this subject. Narcissism is a crucial concept, and is considered here as a permanent structure. In this perspective it is the increasedtension between the ego ideal and the ego that provokes a narcissistic break, and as a consequence of this, the death impulse invades the ego, which succumbs todepression. The concept of denial (Verleugnung) is considered as an essential operator for depression, for one psychic current accepts the loss but the other, unconscious, disavowels it.Facing the...

4. MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS IN TRAINING RETURN ON INVESTMENT IN THE BRAZILIAN ORGANIZATIONS - CRISTINA GOMES PALMEIRA
Training ROI, last stage in the training evaluation methodology, that also includes reaction, learning, behavior and results, is the object of study of this research that investigated the existing systems to measure it in the Brazilian organizations, as well as the importance of the theme. A broad revision of the literature about the existing methods to calculate Training ROI was made and resorted mainly to authors in the United States. The theoretical reference and the realization of a pretestin 2002, contributed as basis to formulate a questionnaire that evaluated the conditions and perceptions for the calculation of Training ROI in...

5. THE CHORDS OF A SYMPHONY: THE MORALS OF DIALOGUE IN THE THEOLOGY OF BERNHARD HÄRING - MARIA INES DE CASTRO MILLEN
This thesis is the fruit of an interpretative critical analysis of the bases of Moral Theology elaborated by Bernhard Häring which, due to is characteristics and proposals, is here given the name Morals of Dialogue. Moral Theology is a pratical science and, because of this it is important to emphasize that the theoretical construction of the author has as its foundation his day-to-day existence, the story of a long and productive life, in wich he perceived how to make Dialogue a welcome experience, which he built on and transmitted to others. In it, his life and his work are fused...

6. TRUE MAN, TRUE GOD: CHRISTOLOGICAL BASES OF THE CHRISTIAN ANTHROPOLOGY IN WOLFHART PANNENBERG'S THINKING - MARCOS ANTONIO DE SANTANA
Considering the reductionisms with anthropologic trait experienced in the Christian spirituality and praxis in the present-day Latin American Church that has, as a presupposition, a christology which will not adequately unite the Christ of faith and the Jesus of history, the crucified and the resurrected one the present workintends to inquire into the relation between christology and anthropology in the Pannenbergian theological thinking. Our research lays special emphasis on the reflection about the contents of his Christology with the intent of determining whether it is possible to suitably connect Christology from above and Christology from below, and therefore overcome the...

7. IM-POTENT GOD SUFFERING AND EVIL IN CONFRONTATION WITH THE CROSS - PAULO ROBERTO GOMES
Suffering and evil always raise a series of recurring questions. In dealing with man and woman, in the context of modern mentality, there arises an inquiry: how can we harmonize the affirmation of an All-Mighty God with the reality of suffering and evil, safeguarding the autonomy of the human being and the world? In dialogue with three contemporary theologians, Andrés Torres Queiruga, JürgenMoltmann and Jon Sobrino, we try to deal with this questioning, emphasizing their contributions, detecting lacunas, and discerning the critiques in order to complement, enrich and deepen their considerations. Our study departs from a pastoral question, analyzed in...

8. DYNAMICS OF AN HORIZONTAL ROTOR ON ELASTOMERIC BEARING SUPPORTS - RAMIRO GERMAN DIAZ CHAVEZ
Viscoelastic Passive Controllers are an important field of technological research due to the development of new materials and design techniques. Damping properties allow an easy retrofit of existing machines with excessive vibration problems, developing Elastomeric Bearing Supports. They are an economic and effective solution in the suppression or attenuation of vibrations in dynamic systems suffering from instability or resonance problems, which often lack of sufficient damping. This work involves the study of an horizontal rotor with elastomeric bearing supports, adapted of another one, the study of several effects on his operation, the measurement of his motion, the identification of the...

9. QUALITATIVE STUDIES FOR DETERMINATION OF PYRENE METABOLITES USING GC/MS - PATRICIA RIZEL
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons are ubiquitous pollutants that usually present carinogenic and mutagenic effects. Several organisms are able to metabolize them quickly, and therefore becoming very important the development of analytical techniques for their metabolites determination. The chemical analyses of 1-hydroxipyrene is one of the first steps for evaluation of environmental assessment by PAH exposure. Pyrene is one of the principal compounds of this xenobiotic class and 1-hydroxipyrene is yours majormetabolite. This study presents a method for qualitative analysis of 1-hydroxipirene. Tests were performed due to allow the use of a methodology for routine analysisin biological samples. The chosen method included...

10. EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE BEHAVIOR OF COMPOSITE COLUMNS SUBJECTED TO COMPRESSION AND BENDING - FABIANA FREITAS NOGUEIRA
Composite columns are a structural members subjected to compression and bending, made of concrete and structural steel. One particular type of composite column consists of rectangular steel hollow sections completely filled withconcrete and reinforcing bars, which is the type of column considered in this work. One of the advantages of this column is the construction facility. The objective of this work is to study experimentally the behaviour of composite columns when subjected to combined compression and bending.Initially a series of tests of composite specimens was carried out in order to obtain the stress-strain curve for the concrete confined by the...

11. DOWNSIZING AND STRESS: A CASE STUDY - LUIZ ANTONIO DE ASSIS FERREIRA
This work aims to analyze the relationship between downsizing and stress in GE Celma during the year 2002 and its effects on the organization and the remaining employees. The choice of GE Celma is due to its position in Brazil and worldwide as a reference company of maintenance and repair of aeronautic engines. This work was based on the study of a case and the literature about downsizing and stress published in books or articles in specialized journals. Data was collected through 45 interviews answered by the remaining employees of the company. The results of these interviews were qualitatively worked...

13. THE AUSTRALIAN FOREIGN POLICY TOWARDS EAST TIMOR - CLAUDIA LAMARCA
This work constitutes a study of the Australian foreign policy towards East Timor, from the Indonesian invasion in 1975, to the international intervention in theterritory in 1999. The main goal is to explain how the Australian foreign policy towards East Timor changed from a position that was conniving with the Indonesianinvasion and rule for more than twenty yeras, to a stance of engagement in the debate on the future status of the territory. With that change, Australian eventually tookparticipation in the international intervention and assumed the role of leader of the multinacional force.

14. EDUCATION AND TOURISM IN THE STATE OF RIO DE JANEIRO: A WIDE-SCREEN VIEW OF THE HIGHER EDUCATION - VALERIA MARIA DE SOUZA LIMA
Tourism, as a phenomenon, has featured quite promising figures throughout the world and seems to be able to contribute to the social, cultural, and sustainable development of tourist-oriented places. However, it involves complex inter and co-relations with other fields, which provokes great tensions. One of these nodes of tension is caused by the proximity with other productive sectors of the educational field between the 70's and the 90's, as the latter demanded highly qualified, graduated professionals, which, as far as tourism is concerned, causedthe creation and the progressive development, in Brazil, of degree courses in such specialty. This work is...

15. HIPERTEXT, KNOWLEDGE CONSTRUCTION AND THE PRESENTANTION OF PEDAGOGICAL MATERIAL OVER THE INTERNET - ALEXANDRE CANTINI REZENDE
The mediation between the characteristics of present time youth, the characteristics of hypertext and its new literacy and the conjuncture of digital exclusion and the necessity of changing this scenario are the starting point for exploring hypertext and for suggesting, based upon the theoretical postulates of David Ausubels pedagogy, a set of tools for the elaboration of hypertext systems witch seek for pedagogical efficiency, not only through their content, but through a series of statements and action which they stimulates. In a world of increasing convergence towards the electronic media of communication and information dissemination, discussing and implementing actions which...

16. THE TEACHING OF READING AND WRITING AND THE LITERATURE: DIALOGISM AND AESTHETICS IN WRITTEN LANGUAGE ACQUISITION - PATRICIA DA SILVA PACHECO
This work aims at establishing a relationship between language and literature in situations of written language acquisition, in the first years of primary education.Conceiving language, and more specifically literature, as a living and historical element fundamental to the formation of the subject, I start questioning the ways and concepts of native language teaching, in view of the existence of a reading being since the initial years of the teaching of reading and writing. Which language concepts guide its teaching in primary school and, according to such concepts, which use is made of literature in this process? For the purpose of...

17. MODELS AND ALGORITHMS FOR THE GENERALIZED ASSIGNMENT PROBLEM (PAG) AND APPLICATIONS - ALEXANDRE ALTOE PIGATTI
This dissertation tackles the Generalized Assignment Problem (PAG), models and algorithms are studied and proposed. This work was motivated by a real world application: the Truck Loading Problem (PCC). Research was done on approximated (metaheuristics) and exact algorithm for solving the PAG. The approximated algorithms proposed were based on a recent idea from Fischetti and Lodi (2003). It uses integer programming to explore wider neighborhoods. The results were compared to the best known, while demanding much less implementation effort and using less cpu time. The exact algorithm proposed is a branch-and-cut-and-price developed from the branch-and-price algorithm ofSavelsbergh (1997). We used stabilized...

18. REPRESENTATIONS OF TRIANGLE GROUPS IN COMPLEX HYPERBOLIC - LUIS FERNANDO CROCCO AFONSO
The main aim of this work is to study type-preserving representations p: gamma PU(2, 1) of triangle groups _ in the group of holomorphic isometries of the twodimensionalcomplex hyperbolic space H2C. The triangle group gamma(p, q, r) is the group generated by reflections in the sides of a geodesic triangle having angles pi/p, pi/q and pi/r. We focus our attention on the groups gamma(4,4, infinit) and gamma (4,infinit, infinit).Among other results, we prove that for each case:1. There is a continuous path of representations pt which contains all type-preserving representations of gamma in PU(2,1) up to conjugation by isometries. This...

19. THE INFLUENCE OF SCIENTIFIC-NATURAL PARADIGM IN MODERN SOCIO-POLITICAL THOUGHT. - FLAVIO ELIAS RICHE
The research in subject aims to operate an epistemological analysis of Modernity. Making use of Thomas Samuel Kuhns terminology, it tries to demonstrate how the knowledge resulted from natural sciences acquires, in the modern period, hegemonic and paradigmatic character, determining then even the development of political and social thought. It is established, thus, a relationship of methodological dependence, insomuch that the current crisis of modern scientific-natural paradigm turns non-postponable the revision of the own epistemic statute of social sciences. The challenge, however, consists in overcoming deficiencies of the obsolete paradigm without abandoning fundamental acquisitions provided by it, having, for this...

20. LOW FLOW LIMIT IN SLOT COATING PROCESS OF POLYMERIC SOLUTIONS - OLDRICH JOEL ROMERO GUZMAN
Slot coating is a common method in the manufacture of a wide variety of products. The thickness of the coated liquid layer is set by the flow rate fed to the coating die and the speed of the substrate, and is independent of other process variables. An important operating limit of slot coating is the minimum thickness that can be coated at a given substrate speed, generally referred to as the low- flow limit. For Newtonian liquids, the mechanism that defines this limit balances the viscous, capillary and inertial forces in the flow. Although most of the liquids coated industrially are...
