Men weet ook...

  2. Evaluating Benchmarking to Optimize Management of Type 2 Diabetic Patients: The Belgian Baseline Data

HERMANS, M; MULS, E; NOBELS, F; CLAES, Neree; KRZENTOWSKI, F; DEBACKER, N; Matthys, An
Background. An intense diabetic patient care using effective interventions and treatments can significantly reduce the burden of diabetes complications. Benchmarking is a comparative technique that may improve the quality of care. It consists of providing feedback on physician’s individual performance compared with preset targets, according to current guidelines, and mean performance of a peer group. The OPTIMISE study aims to assess the effect of benchmarking on the quality of care in type 2 diabetic patients during a 12-month period in 6 European countries. Methods. For Belgium, 94 General practitioners (GPs) with 1126 patients are assigned to the benchmark group and...

HERMANS, M; MULS, E; NOBELS, F; KRZENTOWSKI, G; CLAES, Neree; DEBACKER, N; Matthys, An

  6. Facilitating Intercultural Encounters within a Global Context: Towards Processual Conditions

  8. Diversity in the lean automobile factory: Re-doing class along socio-demographic identities

    ZANONI, Patrizia
The study investigates how diversity is discursively constructed in an automobile factory as 1) the inability of specific socio-demographically ‘different’ groups of workers to function within the lean production system and 2) individual workers’ resistant strategy to contain exploitation drawing on alleged inability. In both constructions, workers’ difference is systematically associated with lower surplus value. These discursive constructions are, on the one hand, firmly anchored in the material and discursive productive structure of the factory. On the other, they are deployed to legitimize the elimination of 1) phases of the production process that can be carried out by ‘different’ workers...

  9. Does watching television affect your trust in the medical profession? A quantitative analysis.

    VAN MIERLO, Jan
Background: The research question in this quantitative study is two-fold: first this paper studies the influence of watching television on the viewers’ trust in the medical profession (TIM). Second, this study focuses on the influence of the total viewing volume and the exposure to specific images concerning medical characters. Methods: Data was collected on 1275 Flemish adolescents using a longitudinal panel study. Included were questions on their overall and specific media use, health behaviour and health perceptions. An analysis on television content was used in order to link health related content to specific types of television programming. TIM was questioned using a...

  10. Predictors of effectiveness of a tailored behaviour change programme with multiple delivery modes

JACOBS, Nele; CLAES, Neree; VAN MIERLO, Jan; THIJS, Herbert; DENDALE, Paul; DE BOURDEAUDHUIJ, Ilse
Background. The aim of the present study was to determine the predictors of surfing depth and changes in weekly physical activity and daily fat intake after 6 months. Methods. 208 highly educated adults received access to a website (with tailored feedback) and individual coaching. Website logs and linear regression analyses were used. Results. Positive changes were found for physical activity and fat intake. Surfing depth (visiting deeper laying pages of the website) was predicted by individual coaching and not being in line with the norm for sports (p<.001;p<.05). An increase of physical activity and a decrease of fat intake were...

  11. A Comparison of Patients With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome in Two "Ideologically" Contrasting Clinics

Van Houdenhove, Boudewijn; VAN HOOF, Elke; Becq, Katrien; Kempke, Stefan; Luyten, Patrick; De Meirleir, Kenny
Aim of the present study was to compare chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) patients, attending 2 "ideologically" contrasting clinics for CFS, on various patient and illness characteristics. Fifty-nine CFS patients of each clinic, located in Leuven and Brussels (Belgium), participated. Patients did not differ with regard to age, levels of fatigue, psychopathology, and self-efficacy. However, patients from the psychosocially-oriented clinic had a lower level of education, reported more progressive illness onset, and attributed their illness more to psychological causes. Patients in the biologically-oriented clinic reported more pain, and showed higher levels of social functioning, motivation and vitality, as well as fewer...

JACOBS, Nele; Beckers, Jaak; RAES, Filip

  13. Transnational activities and social-cultural integration of Turkish and Moroccan descendants in Flemish Belgium

VANCLUYSEN, Kris; VAN CRAEN, Maarten; ACKAERT, Johan
The two key questions that this paper seeks to address are: (1) To what extent are Moroccan and Turkish immigrants (and their descendants) living in Belgium involved in transnational activities? (2) What is the impact of transnational involvement on the social-cultural integration of people of Moroccan and Turkish descent into the country of settlement? To answer these research questions we carried out quantitative analyses on data gathered in three cities in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium: Antwerp, Genk and Ghent (618 standardized face-to-face interviews). Results show that in both communities transnational activities are common practices. Those of Turkish descent have...

  14. Beyond national identities: the discontinuous sense of identity in immigrant communities

    VAN CRAEN, Maarten; VANCLUYSEN, Kris
In the past, the focus of migration and integration research on ethnic identity implied looking at national identity (a feeling of connection to a nation state) or at identification with the people of a nation state. The regional, provincial and local identities of members of immigrant communities were ignored, even though they too are based on territorial and/or social-cultural characteristics. Furthermore, these identities also shape the self-images of members of immigrant communities, and their process of integration. In this paper we will answer three research questions: (1) how strongly do members of Turkish and Moroccan communities in Flanders have a...

Centraal in...

  16. Priming patient safety in undergraduate medical students. An explorative study.

VAN MIERLO, Jan; VANDERSTEEN, Marjan; VAN DER SCHAAF, Tjerk

  17. Babel's AAQ-II: Do different languages result in different outcomes in Europe?

  18. De Vlaamse Integratiekaart Deel IV: Resultaten van de Survey Integratie

VANCLUYSEN, Kris; VAN CRAEN, Maarten; ACKAERT, Johan
In welke mate verschillen hun waardeoriëntaties?

  20. Does watching television affect your fear of illness? A cultivation analysis on the impact of watching television on the attitudes of television viewers.

    VAN MIERLO, Jan
Background: The research question in this quantitative second-order cultivation study is two-fold: first this paper studies the influence of watching television on the viewers’ fear of illness. Secondly, this study focuses on the influence of three different TV exposure measures: the respondent’s total weekly viewing volume, the genre exposure (exposure to medical drama) and the specific exposure to images concerning medical characters. Methods: Data was collected on 1275 Flemish adolescents using a longitudinal panel study. Included were questions on their overall and specific media use, health behaviour and health perceptions and attitudes. An analysis on television content was used in order to link...
