  1. Preliminary observations on the reproductive cycle of female Tegu lizards (Tupinambis teguizin)

    Yanosky, Ángel Alberto; Mercolli, Claudia
The black tegu lizard, Tupinambis teguixin (Linnaeus 1758) is a common element in the wild all throughout Southamerica except for Chile. This teiid lizard was outstood by earlier travellers such as Sir Charles Waterton who reported for the first time about the delicate food, resembling chicken flesh and frequently consumed by local natives. Despite its relative abundance and both the intense economical and social importance of tegus, as well as its situation in the food web, the reproductive biology of tegus was, until recently, largely unknown.

  2. Temperaturas internas y frecuencias de muda en crías de Tupinambis teguixin (Reptilia: teiidae) bajo condiciones controladas

    Yanosky, Ángel Alberto; Mercolli, Claudia
Internal or cloacal temperatures (CT) in tegu offspring were studied in an environmental chamber and the were higher than ground temperatures (GT) when these were low, except for a GT of 26.5ºC for which CT was similar. The increase in GTs means an increase in CTs up to 37.21ºC for which the difference between CT and GT were the greatest. The increase of GT above 31.5ºC was related with a decrease in CT: Inmatures CT behaved in a similar way. At 40ºC in GT, animals could not regulate their CT and died. Data depicted here show a certain degree of...

  3. Ecología trófica de Teius oculatus (Sauria: teiidae) en el sur de la provincia de Córdoba (Argentina): composición, variación anual y estacional de la dieta

Acosta, Juan Carlos; Ávila, Luciano Javier; Martori, Ricardo
The aim of this project was to study the composition and the anual variation of the diet of Teius oculatus in Río Cuarto, Córdoba, Argentina, during the summers 1988-1989 and 1989-1990. After the analysis of the stomachs diet categories were established as well as frecuency, volume and the number of individuals consumed. The IRI, relative index of importance, was used to study comparative food data. Our results are: 1) there are basic components (ITA, ACR, COL and LAR) and supplementary ones (ISO, ARA, GRI, FOR, HOM, CAR, IVA and OIT), 2) the species is mainly insectivorous and oportunistic, and 3)...

  4. The arsenic action during the Bufo arenarum gonad development (Anura: bufonidae)

    Rengel, Dora; Pisanó, Armando
Bufo arenarum ovulations have been kept in potassium bibasic arsenate from the fertilization until 26mm larva. The gonad in development, in the presence of the toxic, suffers significant alterations in its volume, shape and structure. It does not have the typical naillike morphology; on the other hand, it is presented as a spherical mass of reduced volume, that has, as demostrated by the histological analysis, very few oocytes or gonia submerged in a very scarce quantity of stroma. The hypothesis of this study was that it would be due to a succession of events whose cause would lie on the...

  5. La posición de Pleurodema borellii en las razas sexuales (Anura: leptodactylidae)

Rengel, Dora; Pisanó, Armando; Montero, Ricardo
Sex differentiation was studied in tadpoles of Pleurodema borellii which lives in different geographic area of Argentina, fixed at various stages of metamorphosis. Gonads are sexually undifferentiated till the larva reach about 20 mm body length stage. Nevertheless sex differentiations occurs before metamorphosis take place, at about 30 mm. body length stage; gonads show macroscopic and microscopic difference at this time. Therefore P. borellii seems to belong to a "differentiated race".
