  1. Hepatoprotective fraction from aerial parts of Delonix regia

    The present study deals with the amelioration by Delonix regia aerial parts extract against hepatotoxicity induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), which was evaluated in terms of serum marker enzymes like aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, albumine, total protein, direct bilirubine and total bilirubine. These biochemical parameters were alter by the single dose of CCl4 (2 ml/kg, p.o.). Pretreatment with D. regia extracts prior to administration of CCl4, at the dose of 400 mg/kg p.o. per day for 7 days, significantly restored all the serum and liver tissue parameters near to the normal levels.   2. Drug excipient interaction study with polymorphic forms of tibolone.

    Powder mixtures (1:1) of tibolone polymorphic forms I (monoclinic) and II (triclinic) and excipients have been prepared and compacted. The samples were stored at 50 °C and 90% RH for one month and subsequently were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results indicate that during the compaction, the applied pressure reduced the chemical stability of tibolone in both polymorph forms. The triclinic form was more chemically unstable, both pure and in contact with excipients, than the monoclinic form. Lactose monohydrate was shown to reduce chemical degradation for both forms.   3. HPLC analysis of bioactive steroids from the roots of Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal (Ashwagandha)

    A simple procedure was described for the determination of Withanolide A and Withanolide B in Ashwagandha root by HPLC. Separation was achieved on a Spherisorb C18 column with Water: Acetonitrile in the gradient elution. Detection was accomplished with UV detection at λ = 216 nm. Using this method, the bioactive steroid in Withania somnifera was determined. Significant variations in the contents of Withanolide A and Withanolide B in Ashwagandha root growing in different locations were also observed.

    D-002 is a mixture of 6 high molecular weight primary alcohols purified from beeswax with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This study investigated the in vitro genotoxic potential of D-002 to produce chromosomal aberrations (CA) in peripheral blood lymphocytes. Fresh suspensions of BWA were added (500; 750, 1000, 2500 and 5000 μg/mL) to cultures with (microsomal liver fraction S9 mix) or without metabolic activation.   6. In vitro Antioxidant and Membrane Stabilizing Activities of Oxalis corniculata Linn.

    The methanolic extract of the whole plant of Oxalis corniculata was evaluated for antioxidant and membrane stabilizing activities. The total phenolics in the methanol extract was found 213.69 mg of gallic acid per g of extract when determined using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. Besides, antioxidant activity was also assessed by various methods, including free radical, hydrogen peroxide, and nitric oxide scavenging and phosphomolybdenum antioxidant assay and reducing power determination. In these cases, butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and ascorbic acid were used as a standard antioxidants.   7. Fitoconstituintes isolados da fração em diclorometano das cascas do tronco de Scutia buxifolia Reissek

    Fracionamento cromatográfico da fração em diclorometano obtida do extrato etanólico das cascas do tronco de Scutia buxifolia Reissek (Rhamnaceae) conduziu ao isolamento de lupeol, β-sitosterol e estigmasterol. As estruturas foram identificadas através de técnicas espectroscópicas usuais, além da comparação com dados relatados na literatura. Os compostos isolados são relatados pela primeira vez para a espécie S. buxifolia.

  8. O processo de seleção e padronização de medicamentos em hospitais de pequeno e médio porte da região sul do estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil

    Os procedimentos relacionados com o processo de Seleção e Padronização de Medicamentos foram analisados em 25 Farmácias Hospitalares dos Hospitais do sul do estado de Santa Catarina – Brasil. Os dados foram coletados através de questionário estruturado, aplicado in loco na forma de entrevista e posteriormente consolidados pela abordagem metodológica do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo. Os resultados apontam que nenhum dos hospitais dispõe de Comissão de Farmácia e Terapêutica e em torno de 70% dos hospitais a escolha dos medicamentos é realizada exclusivamente pelos médicos.     Imatinib inhibits Bcr-Abl, c-KIT and PDGFR kinases involved in chronic myelogenous leukemia and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. Mice were given imatinib PO (50 mg/kg) or IV (12.5 mg/kg) and plasma, liver, brain, spleen, kidney disposition profiles analyzed. Plasma t1/2 was 4.5 h. IV plasma AUC0→∞ was 11.59 μg·h/mL, MRT was 4.87 h, Cl was 1.08 l/h/kg and VSS was 5.23 l/kg.     Twelve compounds were isolated from the rhizoma of Paris polyphylla Smith var. pubescens Handel-Mazzetti. Based on spectral data, the isolated compounds were identified as stigmasterol (1), β- Ecdysterone (2), Diosgenin (3), Ophiopogonin C’ (4), Diosgenin-3-O-α-L-arabinofuranosyl(1→4)-β-D-glucoside (5), Dioscin (6), Paris saponin I (7), Paris saponin II (8), Pennogenin-3-O-α-L- arabinofuranosyl (1→4)- β- D-glucoside (9), Paris saponin VI (10), Pennogennin- 3-O-α-L-arabinofuranosyl(1→4)-[α-Lrhamnopyranosyl(1→2)]-β-D-glucoside (11) and Paris saponin VII (12).     A atividade antioxidante dos extratos vegetais de Eugenia brasiliensis, E. beaurepaireana e E. umbelliflora foi avaliada usando diferentes métodos: Determinação da ação sequestrante de radicais livres usando DPPH, determinação do potencial redutor e determinação do potencial inibidor da peroxidação lipídica. Foi correlacionado também a o conteúdo de fenólicos totais e de flavonóides contidos nestes extratos e frações com a atividade antioxidante.     Paeonol is a micromolecular phenolic compound and it is the main component of Chinese herbal medicine that has been isolated from the root bark of Paeonia moutan. Paeonol is identified to have various physiological activities. In this study the antitumor activity and the possible mechanisms of paeonol were investigated in mice bearing EMT6 breast cancer model. The results showed that paeonol (150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg) effectively reduced the weight of EMT6 breast tumor.
