  1. Thesis overview: Design, evaluation and optimization of the wavelet transform for medical video coding in single processor architectures

    Bernabé García, Gregorio
In this work, we present a new lossy video compression scheme, based on the use of the 3D Fast Wavelet Transform (3D-FWT). This encoder achieves high compression ratio and a quality excellent from the point of medical view, because there are no differences between the original and the reconstructed video. On the other hand, we propose several techniques to allow the real-time video compression and transmission of the 3D-FWT in single processor architectures. We mitigate the memory problem by exploiting the memory hierarchy of the processor using the blocking techniques. We also put forward the reuse of previous computations in...

  2. Design, implementation, and evaluation of a new journaling file system with data and meta-data separation

    Piernas Cánovas, Juan
This thesis describes the design, implementation and evaluation of a journaling file system called DualFS. Our main goal is to improve disk I/O by designing a new file system which must have two features: a better performance than that of current file systems, and a fast consistency recovery after a system crash.

  3. Software engineering: Theory and practice

    Bertone, Rodolfo Alfredo
A book that describes and applies Software Engineering methods according to the state of the art of the subject matter; it is integrated with a proper exemplification and evolves as each topic is introduced. The material is designed for undergraduates of the initial course of Software Engineering and/or professionals who wish to improve their techniques for the development of software systems.

  4. A genetic based neuro-fuzzy controller for thermal processes

Goel, Ashok Kumar; Saxena Chandra, Suresh; Bhanot, Surekha
This paper presents a neuro-fuzzy network where all its parameters can be tuned simultaneously using Genetic Algorithms. The approach combines the merits of fuzzy logic theory, neural networks and genetic algorithms. The proposed neuro-fuzzy network does not require a priori knowledge about the system and eliminates the need for complicated design steps like manual tuning of input-output membership functions, and selection of fuzzy rule base. Although, only conventional genetic algorithms have been used, convergence results are very encouraging. A well known numerical example derived from literature is used to evaluate and compare the performance of the network with other modelling...

  5. High resolution images from low resolution video sequences

Cristina, Federico; Dapoto, Sebastián H.; Russo, Claudia Cecilia; Bria, Oscar N.
In some cases, low resolution of those images composing a video film hinders the proper visual interpretation of its data. A typical example of this is video obtained from security cameras. There thus exists the need to count with some method allowing the processing of such information in order to obtain a better quality and a higher level of detail of those images. This gives rise to the possibility of making a more reliable interpretation of images, all of which eases the determination of, for example, some people face features or a car plate numbers. Nowadays, there exist some techniques...

  6. An image retrieval system based on the feature of color differences among the edges of objects

    Chan, Yung-Kuan; Chen, Chih-Ya
This paper focuses on color differences among the edges of objects in an image. The variations of colors among the objects in the image can depict the directions and simple geometric shapes of most objects in the image regardless of the influence from the shift variant of objects and scale variant in the image. Based on the feature of color differences among the edges of objects, this paper constructs an image retrieval system. Experimental results show that this system can effectively and quickly deliver the desired database images to the users

  7. Application of the fuzzy logic in content-based image retrieval

    Xiaoling, Wang; Kanglin, Xie
This paper imports the fuzzy logic into image retrieval to deal with the vagueness and ambiguity of human judgment of image similarity. Our retrieval system has the following properties: firstly adopting the fuzzy language variables to describe the similarity degree of image features, not the features themselves; secondly making use of the fuzzy inference to instruct the weights assignment among various image features; thirdly expressing the subjectivity of human perceptions by fuzzy rules impliedly; lastly we propose an improvement on the traditional histogram called the Average Area Histogram (AAH) to represent color features. Experimentally we realized a fuzzy logic-based image...

  8. Dynamic discovery of available resources in a computational grid

Curran, Kevin; Parr, Gerard; Bradley, Alan
Corporations such as Boeing are currenlly using computational GRIDs to improve their operations. Future GRIDs will allow an organisation to take advantage of computational GRIDs without having to develop a custom in-house solution. GRID ReMsource Providers (GRP) make resources available on the GRID so that others may subSLTibe and use these resources. GRPs w"Ill allow companies to make use of a range of resources such as processing power or mass storage. However simply providing resources is not enough to ensure the success of a computational GRID. Access to these resources must be controlled otherwise computational GRIDs will simply evolve to...

  9. Full automatic framework for segmentation of MR brain image

Zheng, Chong-Xun; Lin, Pan; Yang, Yong; Gu, Jian-Wen
Magnetic Resonance Imaging is one of the most important medical imaging techniques for the investigating diseases of the human brain. A novel method for automatic segmentation Magnetic resonance brain image framework is proposed in this paper. This method consists of three-step segmentation procedures step. The method first uses level set method for the non-brain structures removal. Second, the bias correction method is based on computing estimates or tissue intensity distributions variation. Finally, we consider a statistical model method based on bayesian estimation, with prior Markov random filed models, for Magnetic resonance brain image classification. The algorithm consists of an energy...

  10. The accessible Web portal B-Navigator: prototype evaluation

Díaz, Francisco Javier; Ferreyra, José Alberto; Harari, Ivana
The accessible Web portal B-Navigator constitutes a digital medium between visually impaired and blind people, and Internet. This portal offers two basic functions: firstly, it "makes accessible" the Web page solicited by the user applying the accessibility norms recommended by international organizations; secondly, it "integrates" different adaptations like screen magnifiers, document readers, which are incorporated automatically in the Web page visited although they were not been provided in the original design. This article presents an evaluation performed to a prototype of the B-Navigator portal, where twenty users with different visual disability levels have participated. It was mounted in the Braille...
