1. GFP-based methods for detecting apoptosis - Chang, Donald C. (???); Luo, Kathy Q. (??)
Apoptosis, also called programmed cell death, is a very important cellular process that plays a vital role in maintaining the normal physiological function of the organism. It must be precisely regulated in order to maintain the proper functioning of our body. At present, there exist a variety of techniques that can detect the process at different stages. However, all of these techniques have certain limitations. Therefore there is a strong need to develop efficient methods that can detect the activation of the apoptotic process in the living cells. Unlike conventional techniques, the invention provides a highly sensitive yet simple assay...

2. Anti-fouling composition and method of production thereof - Qian, Peiyuan (???); Dobretsov, Serguei Vladimirovich; Harder, Tilmann; Lau, Stanley Chun Kwan (???)
It is well known that growth of micro-organisms or macrofouling matters on the submerged parts of a structure may have detrimental effects on their operation and their corrosion rate. A method of preventing fouling of aquatic surfaces by organisms is invented. It does not contaminate the environment to the extent contamination occurred using previous anti-fouling methods. It concerns a bacterial product with antifouling properties against larvae of dominant marine fouling organisms which therefore avoids such organisms from blooming on surfaces with these compounds. In suspension culture, this bacterium releases compounds of high molecular weight that can be harvested by ultrafiltration. This...

3. Neurotrophin NT-7 from carp - Ip, Nancy Y.; Lai, Kwok On
Neurotrophins represent a family of proteins which can support the survival and differentiation of neurons from both central and peripheral nervous systems. Their potential use in the treatment of various neurodegenerative diseases is well known. These growth factors exhibit overlapping as well as distinct specificities of actions on various neuronal populations. The invention relates to discovery of a novel nuerotrophin, named NT-7, from the fish, carp. Various evidence indicates that it represents a novel member of the neruotrophin family. NT-7 was found to be expressed in skin, heart, intestine, and brain in the adult fish. Expression of the recombinant protein enabled...

4. Antigenized antibody vaccine for foot-and-mouth disease - Xie, Yong
Antibodies are proteins produced by the body!|s immune system in response to foreign elements (antigens) which invade the body. Antigenized antibodies are antibodies which are genetically engineered in their variable domain to express epitopes of different antigens. As such, antigenized antibodies can be used as an alternative approach to conventional or synthetic peptide vaccination. This new vaccine formulation is an antigenized antibody gene which elicits immunicity against foot-and-mouth disease virus. The new FMD Vaccine is created by grafting a genetically engineered viral peptide sequence onto swine immunoglobulin(IgM) molecules. When injected into the host, it will stimulate immunogenicity against the complimentary...

7. Modified fluorescent proteins for detecting protease activity - Chang, Donald C.; Luo, Qian
Programmed cell death is a very important cellular process that is critically involved in many diseases. A key step in the programmed cell death is the activation of a series of intracellular proteases, such as caspase-3. The invention is a novel method of detecting the early stage of programmed cell death in living cells. Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) in the jellyfish Aequorea victoria is discovered to be used as a protein detector. When the cloned gene of GFP is expressed in host cells, it can produce an endogenous fluorescent protein without requiring adding converting enzymes or substrates. A molecular probe has...

8. Use of marine fungus originated compounds as antifouling agents - Qian, Peiyuan (錢培元); Li, Xiancui (李憲璀); Kwong, Fuk Ning (鄺福寧); Yang, Lai Hung (楊麗紅); Dobretsov, Serguei Vladimirovich
Although experimentation on antifouling technologies for shipping has continued for approximately 100 years, metal containing antifouling paints continue to be widely adopted. These paints are usually copper or tin based compounds like tributyl tin (TBT) that can prevent fouling by continuously releasing the copper or tin into the surrounding seawater. However, these compounds have negative effects on the marine environment. The present invention concerns alternative antifouling agents derived from marine microbes. It is based on the discovery that 3 strains of marine fungi and a deep-sea bacterium produce small molecular organic compounds that have antibacterial activity as well as inhibitory activity...

10. Purifying solid substance by zone heating and smelting and molecule spreading method and its device - Mi, Yongli; Li, Ning
The present invention relates to zone heating and smelting and molecular diffusion process to purify solid matter, such as yellow phosphorus via eliminating As. By means of zone heating and smelting and molecular diffusion, As content in yellow phosphorus is lowered while lowering the content of other impurities. In addition, no any pollution will be produced in the operation.
