Pulmonary drug delivery system - Wong, J. Tze-Fei; Tam, Michael S. C.
The present invention provides a method of improving the efficiency of absorption into the bloodstream of drugs delivered through the pulmonary route. The drug is mixed with surfactant, preferably a surfactant naturally produced by the lung. This method is found to enhance the absorption of pharmaceutical compositions, and in particular those comprising protein, eg insulin, or peptides, eg vasopressin.

Liver-targeting liposomal doxorubicin preparation for treatment of liver cancer - Wong, J. Tze-Fei (???); TSANG Shui Ying Sue (???)
Most of the cytotoxic drugs used in cancer chemotherapy have narrow chemotherapeutic utility and effectiveness and serious side effects at high dosages. As a result, drug delivery systems have been developed to modify the biodistribution of cytotoxic drugs, improving their selectivity for tumors or reducing the damage to normal tissues. This invention can further improve the performance of drug delivery systems.
Liposomes have been used extensively in delivery system for cytotoxic drugs used in cancer chemotherapy. Such use of liposomes as a drug delivery system has provided a means to improve the therapeutic utility of some conventional drugs. Since many liposomes...

Cellobiase obtained from cellulomonas biazotea - Wong, Wan-Keung R.; Chan, Wai Kei
Cellulosics residues such as wastepaper can be hydrolyzed to glucose by acids or enzymes. Enzymatic degradation of cellulosics requires the synergistic action of cellulases. Recombinant cellulases are ideal for such use and can be enhanced conveniently by generic engineering techniques. A novel biazotea cellobiase gene has been invented for cellulose degradation. It also relates to the DNA encoding it, vectors containing such DNA, a recombinant form of the enzyme and its use in combination with other enzymes for degradation of cellulosics. With the introduction of this novel gene to the recombinant cellulases, it may even allow the conversion of cellulose...

p35nck5a binding proteins - Ching, Yick Pang; Wang, Jerry H. C.
Cyclin-dependent protein kinase 5 (Cdk5) has been shown to be involved in neuronal cell differentiation in the form of an active kinase, named neuronal Cdc2-like kinase (Nclk). However, its activity was shown to be suppressed by forming complex with p35nck5a. Therefore, there is a need for identifying the identities of various binding proteins in the macromolecular protein complex.
The present inventors have now succeeded in isolating three novel p35nck5a binding proteins useful for a variety of purposes, particularly as tools to analyze how p35nck5a interacts with other proteins and for drug development for Alzheimer's Disease.
This invention provides a method to screen...

Cdk5-specific inhibitory peptides - Wang, Jerry H. C.; Zhang, Mingjie; Tang, Damu
Cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks) are key regulatory enzymes in the eukaryotic cell cycle. The activation of a Cdk depends on its association with its specific cyclin partner. The activity of these enzymes is further regulated by an intricate system of protein-protein interactions and phosphorylation. Cdk5 activity has been observed only in neuronal and in developing muscle cells. Experimental evidence has demonstrated that Cdk5 plays important role in neurite outgrowth, patterning of cortex and cerebellum, and cytoskeletal dynamics. Loss of regulation of Cdk5 has been considered to be involved in Alzheimer's disease. However, all currently known peptides that have regulatory effects on...

DNA sequence encoding a retinoic acid regulated protein - Ip, Nancy Y.; Cheung, William M. W.
Retinoic acid (RA) induces the differentiation of many cell types such as epithelial cells and cancer cells. Clinically, RA has been demonstrated to be efficacious in the treatment of promyelocytic leukemia, a type of blood disease. RA has also been shown to affect patterning and neurogenesis in vivo. Since the discovery of the RA receptors that transduce RA signals, one major thrust has been to identify RA-responsive genes to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which RA involved in different physiological activities.
A novel cDNA sequence (Sequence 8.31) that is down-regulated during the RA-induced neuronal differentiation is identified. The gene encoded by...

Antisense oligonucleotides targeted to human cdc45 - Liang, Chun; Feng, Dao-rong; Yu, Zhiling
Antisense oligonucleotides that inhibit expression of human replication-initiation protein as well as methods of preventing or treating hyperproliferative conditions using said oligonucleotides are introduced. One aspect provides an antisense oligonucleotides that inhibits the expression of human replication-initiation protein and has a sequence complementary to at least a portion of a target sequence encoding a human replication initiation gene. By administering a therapeutically effective amount of antisense oligonucleotides or by contacting the hyperproliferating cells with an effective amount of antisense oligonucleotides, expression of replication-initiation protein is inhibited. Methods of screening and testing active antisense oligonucleotides for their ability to inhibit gene...
