1. 3-hydroxy-propanamine derived neuronal reuptake inhibitors - Carlier, Paul R.; Richelson, Elliott; Lo, Ching Kam; Lo, Man Chu
3-hydroxy-propanamine derivatives and acid salts thereof having chiral centers at the C1 and C2 positions exhibit synaptosomal reuptake inhibition of neurotransmitters, and as such represent a new class of psychotropic agents useful as antidepressants.

2. Fullerene-containing optical materials with novel light transmission characteristics - Tang, Ben-Zhong; Yu, Nai-Teng; Peng, Han; Leung, Shuk-mei; Wu, Xuan-zheng
Optical glasses and polymers are described that incorporate homogeneously dispersed fullerene molecules. The resultant materials may be used as optical filters, the cut-off frequency being easily adjustable by changing the fullerene content. To prepare glasses fullerene molecules are firstly functionalized by amination prior to being incorporated into a sol-gel process to prepare the glass. To prepare polymers a pre-existing polymer may be subject to fullerenation, or fullerene may be copolymerized with a selected monomer.

3. Highly stereoregular polyacetylenes from organorhodium catalysts in aqueous media - Tang, Ben-Zhong; Poon, Wa Hong
The present invention provides methods for obtaining highly stereoregular polyacetylenes from organorhodium catalysts in aqueous media in high yield. These methods afford substantial advantages in that they are rapid, economical, and utilize environmentally benign solvents. The present invention further provides methods for making thin films of polyphenylacetylenes that are tough and transparent.

4. Enediyne derivatives - Dai, Wei-Min; Wu, Anxin; Lee, Yuk Ha; Hamaguchi, Wataru; Nishimoto, Sei-ichi; Zhou, Ling; Ishii, Atsushi
Novel C3-substituted cyclodeca-1,5-diynes can be prepared through novel synthetic procedures using starting (E)-C3- substituted-4-(aryl- or heteroarylmethylidene)cyclodeca-1,5-diynes reagents. Both the C3-substituted cyclodeca-1,5-diyn-3-enes and the starting reagents have improved thermal stability compared to unsubstituted counterparts.

Antidepressants such as Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft, are characterized by an ability to selectively block reuptake of serotonin (5-HT). Selective NE-reuptake inhibitor antidepressants such as Tomoxetine and Vivalan have also been developed. Effexor and Serzone have been termed SNRI antidepressants because they inhibit 5-HT and NE reuptake with similar potency. However, these present drugs are ineffective to some patients. Only new generation of drugs possess reuptake inhibition profile different from those currently known can solve the problem. New antiparasitic qinghaosu derivatives are discovered. The new derivatives of qinghaosu (QHS, or artemisinin) and synthetic trioxane are more active, more stable, and more bioavailable than qinghaosu itself and its current commercially available derivatives.These new derivatives involve alteration of the qinghaosu molecule such that a known decomposition pathway is now no longer available. In addition, certain of the groups attached, specifically amino groups, render the derivatives water soluble, and hence facilitate administration and absorption. Neurotoxicity, one of the biggest potential problems with current derivatives, is also reduced by removing the oxygen atom at C-10. Tests conducted on the derivatives shown that...

Huperzine A is a selective and potent reversible acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitor isolated from club moss Huperzia serrata which shows considerable promise for the palliative treatment of Alzheimer's Disease. However, the synthesis of this compound requires many steps. More easily synthesised and potent analogues of huperzine A have been developed, but these compounds are relatively weak AChE inhibitors or contain toxic tacrine moieties. The invention relates to dimeric compounds comprising two 5-amino-5,6,7,8-tetrhydroquinoline fragments joined together by a divalent link group. New methods for preparing analogues of qinghaosu (QHS, or artemisinin) and synthetic trioxane derivatives are developed. These new derivatives which have attached DNA-ligating groups are capable of aligning the trioxane nucleus proximate to specified base sequences in DNA. Despite the idea of combining DNA-binding and other ligands to pharmacophorea is not new, these derivatives synthesized are of new chemical entities. They were also tested for cytotoxicity and neurotoxity and screened against tumour cell lines. Results are very positive and some of the compounds are found to be active. At present time techniques in preparing advanced ceramic materials with high electrical conductivity and magnetic susceptibility are rare. This new invention relates to hyperbranched organometallic polymers, which are useful as precursors to certain ceramic materials, processes for the preparation of such polymers and the preparation of ceramic materials from such polymers, ceramic materials and their use as ferromagnetic materials and electrically conductive materials. A variety of new mesogen-containing acetylenes are prepared and designed. A research team at the HKUST developed new catalyst systems for polymerizing the functional acetylene monomers and manufactured the novel liquid crystalline polyacetylenes. In this new invention, the new side-chain liquid crystalline polymers (SCLCPs) thus manufactured possess the rigid polyacetylene backbones. They demonstrate that the rigid polymer backbone in a properly designed SCLCP system can play an active role in promoting and maintaining the molecular orientations induced by the simple mechanical perturbations.

The invention relates to dimeric compounds comprising two 5-amino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinoline fragments joined together by a divalent linking group, processes for their preparation, intermediates for their preparation, pharmaceutical compositions containing such dimeric compounds and the use of such compounds as cholinesterase inhibitors and in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's Disease and myasthenia gravis.

16. Method for the deposition of diamond on a substrate - Hiraoka, Hiroyuki; Latsch, Stefan A.; Xiao, Rong-Fu
A method is disclosed for the deposition of crystalline diamond on a substrate such as a silicon wafer. A polymer (for example poly(methylmethacrylate)) is provided as a target for laser ablation using for example an ArF excimer laser or an Nd-Yag laser. The laser ablation is performed in the presence of a reactive gas such as oxygen or hydrogen. The substrate is heated to a temperature of between 450 and 700 degrees celsius.
