1. Selecting internet resources : experience at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Library - Yip, Stephen K. F.
Beginning in May 1995, HKUST Library adopted a whole library approach to work on the Library World Wide Web project. All professional librarians in the library were assigned to one of the four Web groups. This paper reports the work and experience of the Selection of Internet Resources Group, including its composition, project goal, selection guidelines, selection process, the selected resources, problems encountered and achievements.

2. CDRS gets first Asian Member - Chan, Diana L. H.

3. Welcome to the Internet : help for librarians - Spodick, Edward F.
??????????(INTERNET)?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? The author attempts to provide a basic introduction to the internet. The focus is on what tools are available to access internet resources, and how to use them. Pointers are provided to network bibliographies and to repositories of resources guides, with less emphasis on exploring the resources themselves, although several resources of primary interest to librarians are discussed.

4. ERL at HKUST Library - Lam, Ki-Tat

5. CD-ROM networks : from platform-dependent local networks to seamless global access - Lam, Ki-Tat
This paper discusses CD-ROM networking technology and the issues of managing a CD-ROM network in an academic library environment. These issues include search software installation, workstation management, network licensing and usage monitoring. Despite problems with the above issues, the prospect of CD-ROM networking technology looks promising, since there is a growing interest in and a greater acceptance of the technology. Future trends of CD-ROM networking are also discussed as more and more CD-ROM database publishers and online service vendors are providing their databases on the internet. This move would undoubtedly enlarge the user base and change libraries' collection development strategies.

6. ???? ? ???? ? ???? ? ???? -- ????????20 ????????????? - Wang, Xiaolei (???)
The author introduced Mr. Pao-liang Chu's Twentieth-century Chinese Writer and Their Pen Names, 2002. Its features of arrangement were emphasized with examples. Some issues and practice of indexing in China's academic publications were also discussed.

7. Changing roles of reference librarians : the case of HKUST Institutional Repository - Chan, Diana L. H.; Kwok, Catherine S. Y.; Yip, Stephen K. F.
The reference librarians at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology play important roles in developing the HKUST Institutional Repository. They have been engaged in all stages of its development: the definition of goals and scope, evaluation of system and content, forming strategies and procedures, interpreting publishers’ policies, contacting and servicing faculty members, acquisition of content, and promotional efforts. This paper describes how the reference librarians were involved in developing the repository and how their roles were reshaped.

8. XML and global name access control - Lam, Ki-Tat
This paper discusses why the MARC21-based authority format has failed in a global setting and details the use of XML and its related technologies to achieve global name access control.

9. Building an institutional repository : sharing experiences at the HKUST Library - Lam, Ki-Tat; Chan, Diana L. H.
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to document Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's (HKUST's) experiences in developing its Institutional Repository and to highlight its programming developments in full-text linking and indexing, and cross institutional searching. Design/methodology/approach – This paper describes how HKUST Library planned and set up its institutional repository, how it acquired and processed the scholarly output, and what procedures and guidelines were established. It also discusses some new developments in systems, including the implementation of OpenURL linking from the pre-published version in the repository to the published sources; the partnership with Scirus to enable full-text...

10. Librarian's view : using the IEL in Hong Kong - Yip, Stephen K. F.

11. Assessing the enduring impact of library instruction programs - Wong, Gabrielle K. W.; Chan, Diana L. H.; Chu, Samuel K. W.
In order to improve library instruction and to produce data that shed light on the value of this core library service, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Library conducted a formal assessment on its instruction program in 2004. A group of 688 users from 25 one-shot sessions was surveyed by a questionnaire four to eight weeks after the sessions were conducted. Results showed that the majority of attendees remained positive about the usefulness of the library sessions; they retained and used the skills learned; the overall rating of the library sessions and the instructors were comparable to those...

12. From idea to reality : building the HKUST Institutional Repository - Kwok, Catherine S. Y.; Chan, Diana L. H.; Wong, Gabrielle K. W.

13. Building and sustaining digital repositories in support of global information access and collaboration - Soong, Samson C.
Institution-based repositories of digital content have developed remarkably in recent years. These digital repositories represent an emerging framework of global cooperation in which libraries move beyond serving their local communities and participate in a global network for cooperative information access and preservation. Developing digital repositories with different purposes and dissimilar contents, challenges librarians with issues of easy access, reliable authentication, steady growth, adequate support, and long-term sustainability. This article intends to share the HKUST Library’s experience in developing, implementing, and maintaining purpose-driven digital repositories with the goal of providing users effective access to digital content for teaching, research, or other purposes;...

14. Piloting an information commons at HKUST Library - Wong, Gabrielle K. W.
At the pilot phase, assessment is crucial. The article reports how the HKUST Library monitors usage and conducted satisfaction surveys to identify users’ needs, expose strengths and weaknesses of the service, and set direction for future development.

15. A 3.1-8.0 GHz MB-OFDM UWB transceiver in 0.18μm CMOS - Zheng, Hui; Lou, Shuzuo; Lu, Dongtian; Shen, Cheng; Chan, Tat Fu; Luong, Howard Cam
This paper presents a complete CMOS dual-conversion zero-IF2 transceiver for 9-band MB-OFDM UWB systems from 3.1 to 8.0 GHz. The transceiver integrates all building blocks including a variable-gain wideband LNA, a single mixer for both RF down and up conversions in RX and TX, a fast-settling frequency synthesizer, and IQ ADCs and DACs. Fabricated in a standard 0.18-μm CMOS process, the receiver measures maximum S11 of -13dB, maximum NF of 8.25 dB, in-band IIP3 of better than -13.7 dBm, and variable gain from 25.3 to 84.0 dB. IQ path gain and phase mismatch of the receiver chain are measured to...
