Introduction. Low sexual desire has been studied more extensively in women than in men.
Aim. The study aims to analyze the correlates of distressing lack of sexual interest and the self-assessed reasons for
the lack of sexual interest among heterosexual men from three countries.
Methods. A web-based survey was completed by 5,255 men aged 18–75 years from Portugal, Croatia, and Norway.
Main Outcome Measures. We used an item that assesses lack of sexual interest from the British NATSAL 2000.
Anxiety and depression were measured with the SCL-ANX4 and SCL-DEP6. Relationship intimacy was measured
using a five-item version of the Emotional Intimacy Scale. A shortened version of...

The aim of this study was to build a structural model to explore the predictors of adjustment to aging
(AtA) in a community-dwelling older population. A community-dwelling sample of 1,270 older
adults aged between 75 and 102 years answered a questionnaire to determine sociodemographic
(sex, age, professional and marital status, education, household, adult children, family’s annual
income, living setting, and self-reported spirituality), lifestyle, and health-related characteristics
(perceived health, recent disease, medication, and leisure). Several instruments were used to assert
psychological variables, namely AtA, sense of coherence, and subjective well-being. Structural
equation modeling was used to explore a structural model of the self-reported AtA, encompassing
all variables. Significant predictors...

This study intended to analyze the indicators of adjustment to aging (AtA)
and to investigate the latent constructs that can work as major determinants in
spirituality for a cross-national older community-dwelling population. Questionnaires
were completed to assess the participants’ background information. Interviews were
performed, addressing one core area: indicators of AtA. Complete data were available
for 154 older adults from two nationalities (German and Portuguese), aged between
75 and 103 years (M = 86.6; SD = 6.98). The data were subjected to content analysis.
Representations of the associations and latent constructs were analyzed using a
multiple correspondence analysis (MCA). The most prevalent response of the interviewed
participants for indicators...

The effects of posthypnotic suggestion on health-related behavior, using a behavioral
measure of adherence, were investigated. Three hundred twenty-three students covering
the full range of hypnotic suggestibility were prescribed an easy (mood rating) or
a difficult (physical activity) task. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either
a) hypnosis with posthypnotic suggestions to facilitate performance of the assigned task
or b) a social request to perform the assigned task. There were significant effects for
type of task and hypnosis, revealing that participants adhered significantly more to the
easy task and that hypnosis decreased task adherence. Hypnotic suggestibility did not
predict adherence, and its interaction with posthypnotic suggestion was not...

The present study examined survivors’ use and misuse of cigarettes and alcohol following Hurricane
Katrina. We also examined several psychosocial factors that we expected would be associated with
higher or lower rates of substance use following the Hurricane. Participants were 209 adult survivors
of Hurricane Katrina interviewed in Columbia, SC or New Orleans, LA between October 31, 2005
and May 13, 2006. Results revealed that survivors were smoking cigarettes, consuming alcohol, and
experiencing alcohol-related problems at a substantially higher rate than expected based on pre-
Hurricane prevalence data. Results also suggested that certain psychosocial factors were associated
with participants’ substance use and misuse following the Hurricane.

Spontaneous complaints of outpatients with focal epilepsy often stress the relationship between
cognitive deficits and Quality of Life (QOL). Consequently, the aim of the present study was to find the
best neuropsychological predictors of QOL in individuals with focal epilepsy, in order to guide their
ambulatory health care.
A sample of 71 Portuguese patients was studied: 40 female, 47 married, with a mean age of 37.48
years (S.D. = 11.79, 16–62), mean education of 7.93 (S.D. = 4.05, 3–17), and focal epilepsy of moderate
severity. A Socio-demographic and Clinical Questionnaire, the SF-36 v1, the Cognitive Functioning Scale
from the ESI-55, a Seizure Control scale (items from the...

Background: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a collective term that encompasses many clinical problems involving the masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joints (TMJ) and associated structures and it has high prevalence among populations. Objectives: Because Brazilian studies have used the instrument proposed by Da Fonseca et al. (1994) to diagnose the severity of TMD, this study was conducted to investigate and estimate the internal consistency and reproducibility of this method. Methods: We used a probability sampling design to select 1230 participants over the age of 18 years who were living in the city of Ribeirão Preto, SP, Brazil. The interviews were conducted by...

In many animal species including humans circulating androgen levels inmales respond
to social challenges. This response has been interpreted as an adaptive mechanism that helps the
individuals to adjust theirbehavior to changes in social context. According to this hypothesis socially
modulated androgen levels (e.g. increased levels in dominants and decreased levels in subordinates)
would influence the subsequent expression of social behavior in a status-dependent fashion.
This rationale is partially based on male physiology and therefore has been rarely investigated in
females. Here, weinvestigated if a hormonal response to a social challenge that produces changes in
status is also present in human females. We have collected saliva from and administered...

Evaluate the distribution and variation of placental vascular indices according to gestational age and
placental volume. From March to November 2007, three-dimensional (3D)-power Doppler ultrasound
was performed in 295 normal pregnancies from 12 to 40 weeks of gestation. Using the same preestablished
settings for all patients, power Doppler was applied to the placenta and placental volume
was obtained by the rotational technique (VOCAL ). The 3D-power histogramwas used to determine the
placental vascular indices: vascularization index (VI), flow index (FI) and vascularization-flow index
(VFI). The placental vascular indices were then plotted against gestational age and placental volume. All
placental vascular indices showed constant distribution throughout gestation. A...

The aims of this study were to develop a scale to assess lay beliefs about generic
medicines, and to investigate whether these beliefs differ according to
demographic factors in an opportunistic general public sample. In the pilot
study, the participants were 92 men and 136 women, and in the main study there
were 314 men and 505 women. At both stages, the participants completed a
questionnaire measuring beliefs about generic medicines, preference for medicines
and demographic information. The scale has good face validity, showing a
satisfactory level of internal consistency. An exploratory principal component
analysis revealed a two-factor structure concerning beliefs about generic
medicines, comprising two core themes (efficacy...

This study examined the relation of coping strategies, social support, and hope
to psychological distress [symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and
general distress] among Hurricane Katrina survivors. The research questions concerned
whether different coping strategies (problem-focused or avoidant coping),
perceptions of social support, and hope were associated with psychological distress
within this sample, as well as whether level of hope moderated the relations
between coping/social support and psychological distress. Results indicate that
avoidant coping was positively related to PTSD symptoms and general psychological
distress, hope was negatively associated with PTSD symptoms and general
psychological distress, problem-focused coping was associated with many PTSD
symptoms, and social support was associated with...

The psychological sense of community is one of the most commonly
investigated constructs in community psychology. Sense of community may
be particularly important for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI)
because they often face societal barriers to participation in community
living, including stigma and discrimination. To date, no published studies
have investigated the psychometric qualities of sense of community
measures among individuals with SMI. The current study tested a series of
confirmatory factor analyses using the Brief Sense of Community Index
(Long & Perkins, 2003) in a sample of 416 persons with SMI living in
community settings to suggest a model of sense of community for
individuals with SMI and...

The main objective of this study was to propose a model, which includes
personal and social factors associated to health-related quality of Life
(HRQoL) in children and in adolescents.
A sample of 3195 children and adolescents was randomly selected from 5th
and 7th graders, in Portuguese public schools. The Portuguese versions of
KIDSCREEN-52, Harter’s SPPS, LOT-R, SSSS and HBSC (selected items)
were used to evaluate personal and social factors and health behaviors.
Various structural equation models were developed in association with
gender, age, socioeconomic status (SES) and using the global sample. The
studied models presented good adjustment indexes, which suggest a good
fit for the hypothesized model.
The psychosocial variables have...

Objective Cognitive impairment has been reported in elderly bipolar disorder (BD) patients, however, few studies have
evaluated middle-aged and older BD patients using standardized cognitive assessments and none (to our knowledge)
analysed middle-aged and older BD patients with recent cognitive complaints. The main objective of this study is to
characterize the cognitive deficits of middle-aged and older patients with BD and compare them with the common agerelated
cognitive deficits observed in Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).
Methods For this retrospective study, a systematic search for all cases of BD patients submitted to a neuropsychological
assessment from 1999–2007, at participant institutions, was performed, and cases were matched (1:2)...

Community integration research explores community contexts and factors that encourage or hinder individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) from actively participating in community life. This research agenda can be advanced by using mixed-methods that better document the relationships between contextual factors and individual experience. Two such methods were applied to a mixedmethods study of 40 adults with SMI living in independent housing in the Southeastern United States. Their contextualized experiences of community integration were measured by applying innovative participatory mapping and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping techniques. Use of these methods in conjunction with one another facilitated the creation of...
