1. Indices for nutritional condition and thresholds for winter survival in sika deer in Hokkaido, Japan - YOKOYAMA, Mayumi; UNO, Hiroyuki; SUZUKI, Masatsugu; KAJI, Koichi; OHTAISHI, Noriyuki
We derived fat indices for sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis) in eastern Hokkaido, Japan, and estimated the probability of over-winter survival with a logistic regression model using fat indices. Kidney fat mass (KFM) appears to be an adequate index of wide range of physical conditions before the onset of severe nutritional stress. When KFM values fell below 20g, femur (FMF) and mandible cavity fat (MCF) indices declined sharply. FMF and MCF were useful indices for detecting malnourished deer. A logistic regression model describes survival thresholds in two bone fat indices for calves (45%) and three fat indices for adult females...

6. EFFECTS OF VARIOUS CRYOPROTECTANTS ON THE SURVIVAL OF MOUSE EMBRYOS CRYOPRESERVED BY THE QUICK FREEZING METHOD - ABAS MAZNI, Othman; TAKAHASHI, Yoshiyuki; VALDEZ, Conrado A.; HISHINUMA, Mitsugu; KANAGAWA, Hiroshi
The effects of concentrations of glycerol, ethylene glycol or dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) in the presence of either 0.25M lactose or sucrose on the post-thaw survival of mouse quickly-frozen compacted morulae were studied. In this method, the embryos were directly frozen in liquid nitrogen (LN_2) vapor at approximately -170℃ for 2 min before being plunged into LN_2. High survival rates of frozen-thawed embryos were obtained when the freezing medium contained 3M ethylene glycol with either 0.25M lactose or sucrose (76.5 and 70.2%, respectively). When the embryos were frozen in glycerol, significantly high survival was obtained with 3M glycerol+0.25M sucrose (73.5%, P<0.001). However,...

7. ELECTROCARDIOGRAM STUDIES IN LLAMAS - BASTRES, Marie Claude; SAKABE, Naozumi; YASUDA, Jun; TOO, Kimehiko
Electrocardiograms (ECG) of 3 captive llamas (Lama glama) were recorded by a telemeter at a farm in Japan. The pattern of the ECGs was similar to the ruminant pattern in the AB lead position. QRS and T-waves were discordant in polarity except in one llama, where the polarity of the T wave changed according to the HR. In the quiet state, the HR varied between 60-80/min depending on the nervousness of the llama. After running and after being held, the HR increased to more than 100/min. During the recordings there were some variations of the HR which could be due...

Recently, the purulent encephalomyelitis in horses as a complication of systemic infections such as strangles have been not infrequently encountered in the field. Because of the occasional outbreaks of the epizootic equine encephalomyelitis, a specific laboratory diagnosis may be required for confirmation of clinical diagnosis between both viral and bacterial encephalomyelitis. There are numerous publications on the microscopical studies of non-suppurative encephalomyelitis contrary to the purulent encephalomyelitis. The authors carried out the clinical and pathological examinations on the brain of 4 cases of purulent encephalomyelitis complicated with strangles comparing with the epizootic encephalomyelitis. The results are summarized as follows; 1)...

Although many reports have described highly purified diphtherial toxin, there is no information about the immunologically and electrophoretically homogeneous preparations. We have obtained the culture filtrates (Lf 90∿100u/cc), consisting of beef extract and beef digested with papain, inoculated with Corynebacterium diphtheriae Park Williams No. 8 TORONTO. And have obtained 0.4g of protein from each 10 litre of the filtrates, by repeated fractionating precipitation with between 50∿60% saturation of ammonium sulfate, further precipitation with acetic acid at pH 4.1,resolution with weak alkali at pH 11,dialyzing against distilled water, and finally drying in cold vacuum. The preparation, a light brownish powder, contains...

The authors tried to investigate the behavior of 8 foals against the infection with abortion bacilli throughout the course of the diseases. All foals which were perrorally inoculated with a very minute does of living Salmonella abortus-equi such as 7.3 millions, revealed the symptoms of infection. One out of 8 foals died of septicemia at 13 days after inoculation. It seemed to us that the symptoms of these artificial infected animals were same as in the natural cases. In the present paper some clinical and haematological observations on each inoculated cases throughout the course are described. The results are summarized...

At Horoizumi village in Hidaka district, Hokkaido, paratyphoid broke out in horses of all ages during several months following January, 1944. In this endemic, 33 out of 48 1-year-old foals had suffered from paratyphoid and 7 of them died. In this time, the writer had occasion to survey the route of infection epidemiologically and observed these diseased foals clinically, bacteriologically, serologically and pathologically. The auther also tried the injection of antibacterial serum into diseased animals for the therapeutic purpose. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1) About 40% of 123 inspected horses, especially in 1-year-old foals, 33 cases...

In the present paper some macroscopical observations on red lymphonodus of goats are described it being author's aim to clarify the anatomical structure and physiological meaning of the tissues. Twentyfive goats were examined of ages ranging from foetus to 2 years old (Table. 1). The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1) The number of red lymphonodi in one body was 0-154,53 being the average. However, the individual deviation was so great that the author could not discern definite relations between the number of red lymphonodi and sexes or diseases etc. (Table. 2). 2) There were tendencies to indicate...

1) The authors descrived, as the first report in Japan, the four cases of puppies which were considered that the pathologically identical to Hepatitis contagiosa canis (RUBARTH, 1947). 2) The intranuclear inclusion bodies were confirmed in the vascular endothelia and reticulocytes of liver, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, tonsils and brain, bronchial epithelia and liver cells, and epithelial cells of tonsils; the inclusion body detectable cells are those of three germinal layers. The inclusion bodies were acidophilic and manifested the positive result for the Feulgen reaction. 3) Remarkable activities of the reticuloendothelial system and the vascular endothelia, and degenerative changes were...

A new heligmosomid nematode, Heligmosomoides protobullosus n. sp., from the small intestine of the Japanese grass vole, Microtus montebelli MILNEEDWARDS collected at several sites in Japan, was described. This new species is distinguished from H. bullosus by the absence of a bubble-like membrane in the bursa. This is the first record of the genus Heligmosomoides from the Japanese Microtus.
