  1. Many diversities for many services: Theorizing diversity (management) in service companies

    Contrary to current definitions of diversity as a set of a priori sociodemographic characteristics, this study re-conceptualizes diversity as an organizational product. Through the analysis of qualitative data from four service organizations, we show that organization-specific understandings of diversity are based on the way employees’ sociodemographic differences affect the organization of work, either contributing to it or hampering it. Such understandings of diversity, in turn, shape organization-specific approaches to diversity management. From our empirical results, we further inductively derive two dimensions of service processes that appear to play a central role in shaping diversity (management) in service oganizations: customers’ proximity versus invisibility...

  2. Pain-related fear predicts disability, but not pain severity: A path analytic approach of the fear-avoidance model

    Two studies are reported that tested the fear-avoidance (FA) model using path analytic techniques. In study 1, 429 employees with back pain at baseline and back pain at 18 months follow-up completed questionnaires assessing sociodemographic information, pain severity, negative affect, pain-related fear, and disability. Results indicated that pain severity at baseline predicted pain-related fear and disability at follow-up, and that pain-related fear is rather a consequence than an antecedent of pain severity.   5. Diversiteit: Een kans of bedreiging voor het feminisme? Een kritisch perspectief

    Deze uiteenzetting maakt de balans op van de mogelijke kansen en de risico's van het concept diversiteit. Sinds zijn ontstaan in de Noord-Amerikaanse bedrijfswereld in de jaren '80 heeft dit bedrijfsconcept veel kritiek gekregen vanuit zowel feministische als linkse hoek. Diversiteit zou namelijk de aandacht van de genderdimensie afleiden, de arbeidersklasse verdelen en ongelijke machtsrelaties onzichtbaar maken. Toch biedt de verankering van dit concept in de dominante economische logica van organisaties ook nieuwe mogelijkheden. Op basis van eigen empirisch onderzoek in Belgische organisaties wordt aangetoond dat een diversiteitsbeleid tot re??le positieve effecten kan leiden voor werknemers uit traditioneel ondervertegenwoordigde groepen....
