  7. Ethical Desires: Toward a Theology of Relational Transcendence

    Rivera Rivera, Mayra de Lourdes
Theologians call the supreme otherness of God “divine transcendence”. Eroticism suggests a link between human otherness and divine transcendence. In its most common versions, however, divine transcendence seems not to enhance the awareness of interhuman otherness, but rather to so relativize difference as to absorb effectively otherness into itself. Bringing transcendence to bear on the ethical encounter between human beings, Emmanuel Levinas's work has influenced philosophies and theologies of liberation as well as post-structuralist thought. However, Levinas sets apart the sexual encounter and ultimately opposes ethics to eroticism. Luce Irigaray's reading of Levinas's Totality and Infinity not only exposes the...

  15. Glory: The First Passion of Theology?

    Rivera Rivera, Mayra de Lourdes
Doxa, the Septuagint's translation of the Hebrew kabôd and the New Testament term for glory, brings into semantic proximity a plurality of concepts related to knowledge and the experiences of awe and wonder. The complex relationship between the various senses of the term doxa lures this exploration of the methodological significance of glory for a theology of the manifold. What if we understood theology as a perpetual movement propelled not by propositional certainty, but rather by the affect of wonder? The experience of wonder in the encounter with the glory of God is represented in the Hebrew Scriptures not only as...

  19. Geospatial analysis of emergency department visits for targeting community-based responses to the opioid epidemic

Dworkis, Daniel A.; Taylor, Lauren A.; Peak, David A.; Bearnot, Benjamin
The opioid epidemic in the United States carries significant morbidity and mortality and requires a coordinated response among emergency providers, outpatient providers, public health departments, and communities. Anecdotally, providers across the spectrum of care at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in Boston, MA have noticed that Charlestown, a community in northeast Boston, has been particularly impacted by the opioid epidemic and needs both emergency and longer-term resources. We hypothesized that geospatial analysis of the home addresses of patients presenting to the MGH emergency department (ED) with opioid-related emergencies might identify “hot spots” of opioid-related healthcare needs within Charlestown that could then...
