    Ribeiro, F. Reinaldo; Silva, Arlindo F.; Metrôlho, J.C.M.M.; Silva, A.P.N.F.; Barbosa, F.S.R.B.M.
Recent years have seen an increasing realization of the importance and potential of accessible tourism. To support it, the ICT industries have provided many different applications, especially for mobile computing frameworks. An analysis of these applications allows us to identify some issues that are not yet fully addressed. These include the absence of collaborative features; the lack of involvement of all stakeholders; the inexistence of synergies; the lack of widely accessible geographic databases and the limited scope of focus within the disability range. To tackle some of these issues, we propose a common framework for development of tourism accessible related...

  12. Simulation optimization: a new job release approach for Industry 4.0

Fernandes, N.O.G.; Thurer, Matthias; Pinho, Tatiana; Torres, Pedro; Carmo-Silva, Silvio
The rise of Industry 4.0 has highlighted simulation optimisation as a decision-making tool for scheduling complex-manufacturing systems, specifically when resources are expensive and multiple jobs compete for the same resources. In this context, simulation optimisation provides an important mean to predict, evaluate and improve the short-term performance of the manufacturing system. An important scheduling function is controlled job release; jobs (or orders) are not released immediately to the shop floor, as they arrive to the production system, but release is controlled to stabilize work-in-process, reduce manufacturing lead times and meet customer delivery requirements. While there exists a broad literature on job...

  16. Developing an index for forest productivity mapping - A case study for maritime pine production regulation in Portugal

    Mestre, S.; Alegria, C.M.M.; Albuquerque, M.T.D.; Goovaerts, P.
Productivity is very dependent on the environmental and biotic factors present at the site where the forest species of interest is present. Forest site productivity is usually assessed using empirical models applied to inventory data providing discrete predictions. While the use of GIS-based models enables building a site productivity distribution map. Therefore, the aim of this study was to derive a productivity index using multivariate statistics and coupled GIS-geostatistics to obtain a forest productivity map. To that end, a study area vastly covered by naturally regenerated forests of maritime pine in central Portugal was used. First, a productivity index (PI) was built based on Factorial Correspondence...

  17. Combining raw and compositional data to determine the spatial patterns of potentially toxic elements in soils

    Boente, C.; Albuquerque, M.T.D.; Fernández-Braña, A.; Gerassis, S.; Sierra, C.; Gallego, J.R.
When considering complex scenarios involving several attributes, such as in environmental characterization, a clearer picture of reality can be achieved through the dimensional reduction of data. In this context, maps facilitate the visualization of spatial patterns of contaminant distribution and the identification of enriched areas. A set, of 15 Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) – (As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg,Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Tl, V, and Zn), was measured in soil, collected in Langreo's municipality (80 km2), Spain. Relative enrichment (RE) is introduced here to refer to the proportion of elements present in a given context. Indeed, a novel approach is provided for research...

  19. Uplink detection performance regarding bandwidth-efficient broadband transmission in a large-scale MU-MIMO System

    Torres, Paulo; Gusmão, António
This paper deals with Single Carrier/Frequency Domain Equalization (SC/FDE) for uplink transmission within a Multi-User (MU) Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) system where the number of Base Station (BS) antennas can be much larger than the number of transmitter antennas jointly using the same time/frequency resource at Mobile Terminals (MT). Selected Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) schemes are assumed for transmission, so that high bandwidth efficiencies are achievable. In this context, we consider either a linear detection or a reduced-complexity, iterative Decision Feedback (DF) detection, evaluate the achievable performances in both cases, and discuss them with the help of selected performance bounds and...
