  2. Determination of thresholds for storm impacts

    Ferreira, Óscar; Almeida, L. P.; Rodrigues, B.; Matias, A.
Storms are responsible for important erosion, coastal retreat and damage when infrastructures are placed within their acting area. The characterisation of storm parameters and associated thresholds for erosion and damage are therefore of fundamental importance for coastal management purposes. This work presents ways of determining thresholds for important morphological changes (including erosion), overwash occurrence and damage associate to storm occurrence. These methods were tested and applied to Ancão Peninsula (South Portugal) and the results shown. The use of these approaches will enable coastal managers to have a quantitative knowledge of consequences associated to each particular storm and to act accordingly, for instance defining set-back lines, designing nourishments or implementing evacuation...

  3. Prediction of storm impacts on beach and dune systems

Ciavola, Paolo; Ferreira, Óscar; Dongeren, Ap Van; Vries, Jaap Van Thiel de; Armaroli, Clara; Harley, Mitchell
This chapter provides an overview of the current knowledge of storm impacts on low-lying coastlines, including beaches and dunes. It first outlines the complexity of identifying a storm event in an objective manner. The impact of storms on dune ridges is then discussed, making a comparison between research recently carried out in both the USA and Europe. The main impacts of storm events are also reviewed, taking into account the development of overwash processes and breaching of the dune system as well as flooding of the hinterland. The chapter also provides a detailed overview of qualitative and quantitative models of...

  5. Chemical stressors in the Guadiana River

    Bebianno, Maria João; Gonzalez-Rey, Maria; Veiga-Pires, C.
The Guadiana River, the fourth major river of the Iberian Peninsula, represents an important aquatic system from a socio, geo and ecological point of view for Portugal and Spain. Important economic activities such as agriculture, tourism and aquaculture are present along with several economic facilities such as harbour (commercial and fishing),marina and small shipyards for construction and repair of small vessels. All these activities generate wastes some of them toxic to the aquatic environment.

  7. Damage evaluation of rammed earth walls subjected to offshore earthquakes

Estevão, João Manuel Carvalho; Braga, Alfredo Manuel Gonçalves Silva
Raw earth is used by men as a building material for thousands of years and remains today as one of the most widespread construction systems in the world. Rammed earth and adobe are the two main earth construction techniques used in Portugal. In Algarve, which is the continental region located at Portugal southern boundary, rammed earth is the prevailing one, either in small rural buildings or in large military fortifications. The study of earth construction is justified for several reasons. First, the necessity to preserve an irreplaceable cultural and architectural heritage. Second, because it is still the most affordable resource...

  8. Effects of spoilage on nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes signatures of the clam Ruditapes decussatus

    Aníbal, J.; Veiga-Pires, C.; Esteves, E.
Fish and seafood products are highly susceptible to post-mortem spoilage due to autolytic reactions at start, then microbiological activity and eventually oxidative reactions. Chemical and microbiological parameters are usually used to assess quality and make decisions for protecting public health, but they lack precision in defining which spoilage pathway is occurring at each moment. The objective of this work was to assess the effects of spoilage reactions on nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes in the grooved carpet shell clam, Ruditapes decussatus, and compare them to biochemical indicators of seafood deterioration, in order to better understand the relations between the different spoilage pathways during commercial storage conditions. Clams were kept...

  9. The continental shelf off the Guadiana estuary

    Mendes, I.; Rosa, Francisca
The Continental shelf is the seafloor area around a large land mass where the sea is relatively shallow compared with the open ocean. This major physiographic domain is comprised between the shoreline and the shelf break located at variable water depths (generally, around 200 m water depth) and variable extensions (average width of about 80 km). The continental shelf off the Guadiana estuary is the area in front of the Guadiana River mouth, which is influenced by the discharges of the Guadiana River Basin. This area is located in the southern border between Portugal and Spain, in the middle part of the northern Gulf of Cadiz continental shelf, southwestern Iberian...

  13. Fossil dunes as proxies for environmental reconstruction. A visit to the aeolianites of Armação de Pêra Bay Algarve. Field Guide. IX Reunião do Quaternário Ibérico

This field guide aims to (i) introduce the dunefield of the Bay of Armação de Pêra located at the south coast of the Algarve, (ii) frame and compare the genesis and evolution of this dune system with other Portuguese coastal dunefields, and (iii) provide information on past sea levels and aeolian activity that encourages a stimulating discussion in the field concerning the dunefields generation and evolution. Dunefields have a great potential to unravel past regimes of atmospheric circulation as they record direct traces of this component of the climate system. In addition, coastal dunes are good proxies of the coastline migration derived from changes in mean sea level. An...

Rosa, Maria Manuela Pires; Gameiro, M. Celeste Barroso; Rodrigues, J. I.; Alves, R. M. A.

  18. Guadiana River Estuary. Investigating the past, present and future

Estuaries are some of the most dynamic and complex environments in the world. The places where rivers meet the sea are subject to cycles of constant change – from the waves and currents that move particles of sand and mud every second, to the daily ebb and flow of the tides and the more dramatic effects of periodic floods, droughts and storms. Over thousands of years, estuaries are created, destroyed and re-created by sea-level changes. Few of the earth’s landforms enjoy such a brief and varied existence. The complex interplay between terrestrial, fluvial, coastal and marine realms makes estuaries unique in...

Figueiredo, Mauro; Jesus, Saul; Duarte, Duarte; Cabral, Fernando
With a background in conceptual art and media art, and the relations between science and art, we tried to approach the concept of stress through art. Stress is a recent problem of people in several countries, and could be caused by external factors, such as social pressure, or be derived from internal factors, such as the requirement that the subject puts himself. Stress had a negative impact at several organs of the human body, but heart is the main one. Taking into account all of these aspects, and from photos of two drawings of the heart ...setup program EDIUS, that integrate all...

  20. Musical journey: a virtual world gamification experience for music learning

Gomes, José; Figueiredo, Mauro; Amante, Lúcia
Games are an integral part of the learning process of humans, in particular for children, who exploit the imagery as an intrinsic part of their lives. Features from games have been successfully implemented as a means to captivate and motivate students to perform learning at various levels of education in traditional schools. This paper presents a virtual world – Musical Journey – representing the Aesthetic Periods of Music History. This virtual environment allows students to freely explore and discover the most relevant sounds, musical instruments and composers, ranging from the first century to present time. Musical Journey is a three-dimensional...
