Santos, Ana Isabel Silva; Martins, Margarida Alves
3. Relationships between primary teachers’ beliefs and their practices in relation to writing instruction

Gaitas, Sérgio Miguel Protásio; Martins, Margarida Alves
Teachers’ beliefs are directly connected to their practices and have an impact on students’ educational experiences and results. The aim of this study was to describe and examine the relationship between beliefs and practices linked to teaching students to write in the first four years of primary school. A total of 255 Portuguese primary school teachers participated in the study. A 52-item questionnaire was used to evaluate their beliefs, preferred activities and classroom organisation procedures in relation to writing instruction. Beliefs and classroom organisation procedures were subjected to factor analysis, whereas activities were considered individually. The analysis of teachers’ beliefs revealed two different factors: (1) code-based beliefs and (2)...

  4. Testosterone response to competition in males is unrelated to opponent familiarity or threat appraisal

Oliveira, Gonçalo A.; Uceda, Sara; Oliveira, Tânia Sofia Ferreira de; Fernandes, Alexandre Constâncio; Garcia-Marques, Teresa; Oliveira, Rui Filipe
It has been proposed in the literature that the testosterone (T) response to competition in humans may be modulated by cognitive variables. In a previous experiment with a female sample we have reported that opponent familiarity and threat appraisal moderated the T response to competition in women. With this experiment we aim to investigate if these variables have the same impact on males T response to competition, extending the previous findings in our lab. Forty male participants (20 dyads) were recruited to engage in a same sex, face to face competition using the Number Tracking Test as a competitive task....

  5. Challenge and threat motivation : Effects on superficial and elaborative information processing

Fonseca, Ricardo Jorge Rodrigues Moita da; Blascovich, James; Garcia-Marques, Teresa
This paper integrates the motivational states of challenge and threat within a dual processing perspective. Previous research has demonstrated that individuals experience a challenge state when individuals have sufficient resources to cope with the demands of a task (Blascovich eta, 1993). Because the experience of resource availability has been shown to be associated with superficial processing (Garcia-Marques and Mackie, 2007), we tested the hypothesis that challenge is associated with superficial processing in two persuasion experiments. Experiment 1 revealed that inducing attitudes of participants in a challenge state was not sensitive to the quality of arguments presented. Experiment 2 demonstrated that...

8. When in Rome… Identification and acculturation strategies among minority members moderate the dehumanisation of the majority outgroup

Miranda, Mariana Pires; Pereira, Maria Gouveia; Vaes, Jeroen
The study of humanness as a dimension of social judgment has received extensive attention over the past decade. Although the common reported finding is that people attribute more human characteristics to their ingroup than to the outgroup, similar tendencies are expected to be tempered for minority groups when judging the host society. In Study 1, carried out with Gypsy minority members, we tested the hypothesis that those group members who adopt an assimilative strategy identifying more with the host compared with the heritage culture will display the lowest levels of dehumanisation. In Studies 2 and 3, conducted with immigrants in Italy and in Portugal, respectively,...

  9. How do families of adolescents with suicidal ideation behave?

Pereira, Maria Gouveia; Abreu, Sónia Alexandra Rodrigues; Martins, Cláudia
The purpose of this study is to analyze how family systems infl uence adolescents’ suicidal ideation. The participants were 534 adolescents (51.1% female and 48.9% male), with ages ranging from 14 to 18 years (M=16.18; SD=1.14). The instruments used were the following: Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale, Psychological Separation Inventory and Questionnaire of Suicidal Ideation. Results have shown that adolescents with higher suicidal ideation belong to the so-called unbalanced families (with low cohesion and fl exibility) and have a confl ictual dependence to their parents. On the other hand, adolescents that belong to balanced families revealed lower suicidal ideation. In conclusion, the family’s cohesion and fl...
