  1. Infant massage improves attitudes toward childbearing, maternal satisfaction and pleasure in parenting

Bárcia, Sónia Cristina da Silva Vicente Cascão; Veríssimo, Manuela; Diniz, Eva
The first year of motherhood is a period of growth and adaptation in women's lives with several challenges such as identifying the baby's needs and giving appropriate answers, so that mother and baby get to know each other and form a strong bond. Infant massage is one of the approaches that make an important contribution to the psychological and physiological wellbeing of both baby and mother, helping to form a harmonious relationship. This longitudinal study assessed the benefits of infant massage in the relationship between mother and baby, from birth to 12 months old. Comprising 194 dyads of mothers and...

  4. Does having a pet make a difference? Highlights from the HBSC Portuguese study

Reis, Marta; Ramiro, Lúcia; Camacho, Inês; Tomé, Gina; Brito, Cristiana; Matos, Margarida Gaspar de
Pets are part of many adolescent’s lives. Objectives: To identify in a large national representative sample of Portuguese adolescents (HSBC study), the percentage of adolescents that have pets, what kind of feelings pets provide, differences by gender and age (through school grades) and to verify whether adolescent health, well-being, life satisfaction and psychological symptoms are associated with having a pet. Methods: The 2014 study provided national data of 6026 Portuguese adolescents (52.3% of which were girls), whose mean age was 13.8 years, randomly selected from those attending 6th, 8th and 10th grades. Measures included asking the participant if he/she had pets, which pet was, and the relationship they had...

Pinto, Alexandra Maria Pereira Inácio Sequeira; Gatinho, Ana Rita dos Santos; Tereno, Susana; Veríssimo, Manuela

  6. Rasch analysis of the routines-based interview implementation checklist

Silva, Tânia Carina Boavida Domingues da; Akers, Kate; McWilliam, Robin A.; Jung, Lee Ann
The Routines-Based Interview (RBI) is useful for developing functional outcomes/goals, for establishing strong relationships with families, and for assessing the family’s true needs. In this study, the authors investigated the psychometric properties of the RBI Implementation Checklist, conducted by 120 early intervention professionals, specifically looking at the probability of correct responses on the items as a logistic function of the difference between the person and the item parameters. We selected Rasch analysis (Rasch, 1980) for this study so we could answer questions about both how themeasure performed and how the interviewers performed and we related these performances to one another. Results indicate that scores on the RBI Implementation...

  7. Effects of an in-service training program using the routines-based interview

Silva, Tânia Carina Boavida Domingues da; Aguiar, Cecília; McWilliam, Robin A.; Correia, Nadine
The focus of this study is an in-service training program rooted in routines-based early intervention and designed to improve the quality of goals and objectives on individualized plans. Participants were local intervention team members and other professionals who worked closely with each team. This training program involved a small number of trainees per group, providing multiple learning experiences across time and various opportunities for self-assessment and monitoring. We investigated (a) the perceptions of the participants about the strengths and weaknesses of the training program, (b) medium-term outcomes of the training with a comparison group, (c) and variables associated with the quality of goals and objectives. This...

  8. Domains of father involvement, social competence and problem behavior in preschool children

Torres, Nuno; Veríssimo, Manuela; Monteiro, Lígia Maria Santos; Ribeiro, Olívia; Santos, António José
Many studies reported that father involvement is associated with a wide range of developmental outcomes; however, evidence is weaker when controlling for correlated mother involvement and when using different informants to assess father involvement and children development. Our study aimed to research the association between father involvement and preschoolers’ social competence, controlling for mother involvement, family demographics, parental stress, time spent in day-care, existence of siblings and child’s characteristics. Participants were 295 children between 36 and 71 months of age, 52% girls, all living in resident-father families. Hierarchical multiple regression models were performed entering the predictors in three blocks: Child...

  11. Longitudinal stability of social competence indicators in a portuguese sample: Q-Sort profiles of social competence, measures of social engagement, and peer sociometric acceptance

Santos, António José; Vaughn, Brian E.; Peceguina, Maria Inês Duarte; Daniel, João Rodrigo
This study examines the temporal stability (over 3 years) of individual differences in 3 domains relevant to preschool children’s social competence: social engagement/motivation, profiles of behavior and personality attributes characteristic of socially competent young children, and peer acceptance. Each domain was measured with multiple indicators. Sociometric status categories (Asher & Dodge, 1986) and reciprocated friendships were derived from sociometric data. Composites for social competence domains were significantly associated across all time points. Within age-periods, social competence domains were associated with both sociometric and friendship status categories; however, neither sociometric status nor reciprocated friendships were stable over time. Nevertheless, analyses examining the social competence antecedents to reciprocated friendship at...
