  1. Transvesical natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES) nephrectomy with kidney morcellation: a proof of concept study

    Lima, E; Branco, F; Parente, J; Autorino, R; Correia-Pinto, J
Study Type - Therapy (case series) Level of Evidence 4. What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? Until now, the transvaginal approach has been the only method of removing larger specimens from the abdominal cavity using natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery. There has been no means of extracting larger specimens in men and the means are restricted even in women, particularly in young women. The present study shows that the difficulty of large specimen retrieval can be overcome, irrespective of the diameter of the chosen port, through natural orifices using morcellation. OBJECTIVE: To show, in a porcine model,...

  2. The role of glycoprotein 130 family of cytokines in fetal rat lung development

    Nogueira-Silva, C; Piairo, P; Carvalho-Dias, E; Veiga, C; Moura, RS; Correia-Pinto, J
The glycoprotein 130 (gp130) dependent family of cytokines comprises interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-11, leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), cardiotrophin-like cytokine (CLC), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF), cardiotrophin-1 (CT-1) and oncostatin M (OSM). These cytokines share the membrane gp130 as a common signal transducer. Recently, it was demonstrated that IL-6 promotes, whereas LIF inhibits fetal lung branching. Thus, in this study, the effects on fetal lung morphogenesis of the other classical members of the gp130-type cytokines (IL-11, CLC, CNTF, CT-1 and OSM) were investigated. We also provide the first description of these cytokines and their common gp130 receptor protein expression patterns during rat lung...

  3. Collecting system percutaneous access using real-time tracking sensors: first pig model in vivo experience

Rodrigues, PL; Vilaça, JL; Oliveira, C; Cicione, A; Rassweiler, J; Fonseca, J; Rodrigues, NF; Correia-Pinto, J; Lima, E
PURPOSE: Precise needle puncture of the renal collecting system is a challenging and essential step for successful percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). This works aims to evaluate the efficiency of a new real-time electromagnetic tracking (EMT) system for in vivo kidney puncture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six anesthetized female pigs underwent ureterorenoscopies in order to place a catheter with an EMT sensor into the desired puncture site and to ascertain the success of puncture. Subsequently, a tracked needle with a similar EMT sensor was navigated into the sensor inside the catheter. Four punctures were performed by two surgeons in each pig: one in the kidney and...
