In this book the authors, who are parallel computing experts and industry insiders, describe how to design and implement maintainable and efficient parallel algorithms using a pattern-based approach. They present both theory and practice, and give some specific examples using multiple programming models.

In my dissertation, we evaluate the current landscape of computation, using as a case study a high-impact problem for society as virtual screening. Virtual screening is a computational tool extensively used for drug discovery. The study has covered all processing levels, starting with an extensive analysis of the different commercially available alternatives at chip level, through their evaluation in a cluster environment, to scale to cloud computing and volunteer computing levels.

The number of devices connected to the Internet has increased significantly and will grow exponentially in the near future, it is due to the lower costs.
It is expected that next years, data traffic via Internet increases up to values around zettabyte. As a consequence of this increase, it can be observed that the data traffic is growing faster than the capacity of their processing.
In recent years, the identification of Internet traffic generated by different applications has become one of the major challenges for telecommunications networks. This characterization is based on understanding the composition and dynamics of Internet traffic to improve...

Currently, there is an increasing interest about the cloud platform by the High Performance Computing (HPC) community, and the Parallel I/O for High Performance Systems is not an exception. In cloud platforms, the user takes into account not only the execution time but also the cost, because the cost can be one of the most important issue. In this paper, we propose a methodology to quickly evaluate the performance and cost of Virtual Clusters for parallel scientific application that uses parallel I/O. From the parallel application I/O model automatically extracted with our tool PAS2P-IO, we obtain the I/O requirements and...

Currently, most processes have a volume of historical information that makes its manual processing difficult. Data mining, one of the most significant stages in the Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) process, has a set of techniques capable of modeling and summarizing these historical data, making it easier to understand them and helping the decision making process in future situations. This article presents a new data mining adaptive technique called SOM+PSO that can build, from the available information, a reduced set of simple classification rules from which the most significant relations between the features recorded can be derived. These rules operate...

With the continuing development of the wireless technologies (Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G, WiMax and Bluethooth), the study of wireless multimedia transmissions has gained lately more attention. For example, the expectations of the company leaders on the growth of Wi-Fi video traffic has updated the lines of research on the standard IEEE 802.11e introduced to provide QoS (Quality of Service) to WLAN (Wireless LAN ) networks. In this paper we updated with greater accuracy, using other resources and the experience gained since the emergence of the standard, the work carried out previously on the quantitative impact of each EDCA (Enhanced Distributed Channel...

The early detection abnormal fermentations (sluggish and stuck) is one of the main problems that appear in wine production, due to the signi cant impacts in wine quality and utility. This situation is specially important in Chile, which is one of the top ten worldwide wine production countries. In last years, two di erent methods coming from Computational Intelligence have been applied to solve this problem: Arti cial Neural Networks and Support Vector Machines. In this work we present the main results that have been obtained to detect abnormal wine fermentations applying these approaches. The Support Vector Machine method with...
