University of Tennessee Sunsite Open Archives Initiative (1.089 recursos)
This is an institutional repository site providing access to various collections of electronic documents produced or curated by the university. The site includes the open source code for the site and various Perl scripts of interest to those working with the OAI-PMH. Only a portion of material is mounted on this site, with a reasonable amount existing as links to other servers. There are currently some errors on the site with the theses & dissertations, Cherokee Indian, Encoded Archival Description & the Roth photography collections being inaccessible. As little background information is offered by the site it is unclear if these are permanently dead links or temporary aberrations.

1. U.S. Civil War Frequently Asked Questions v4.01, Part 2 - Sanders, Justin M., ed.
This is part 2 (of 2) of a collection of answers to frequently asked questions (and some not-so-frequently, too!) about the Civil War. It is posted on or about the 20th of each month. It was compiled by Justin M. Sanders (jsanders@jaguar1.usouthal.edu) who tried to be as complete and accurate as possible, but who is definitely human and who has probably made several errors.

7. A Comparison of the United States Constitution and the Permanent Constitution of the Confederate States - Sanders, Justin M.
The Permanent Constitution of the Confederate States Constitution was nearly identical to the United States Constitution. This file allows a comparison of the two documents. The sections where the C.S. Constitution differs from that of the U.S. will be indicated in the following way: those parts of the U.S. Constitution that were deleted will be placed in braces, and the new words inserted in the C.S. Constitution will be placed in brackets. Punctuation, spelling, and capitalization follow the C.S. Constitution except in the parts unique to the U.S. Constitution. Note that Amendments 1-8 of the U.S. Constitution are found in...

8. The Crittenden Compromise - Crittenden, John, Senator from Kentucky
The Crittenden Compromise was perhaps the last-ditch effort to resolve the secession crisis of 1860-61 by political negotiation. Authored by Kentucky Senator John Crittenden (whose two sons would become generals on opposite sides of the Civil War) it was an attempt to resolve the crisis by addressing the concerns that led the states of the Lower South to contemplate secession. As such, it gives a window into what the politicians of the day thought the cause of the crisis to be. The Compromise, as offered on December 18, 1860, consisted of a preamble, six (proposed) constitutional amendments, and four (proposed)...

This file contains excerpts from "William Newby: Alias Daniel Benton, Alias Crazy Jack, or The Soldier's Return," by G. J. George. First published in 1893, the book provides a detailed look at the controversial William Newby case which came to public light in the early 1890s. A Union soldier of the 40th Illinois Infantry, Newby had returned to his home and family nearly thirty years after his supposed death at the battle of Shiloh in April 1862. Subsequently arrested and indicted on charges of fraud and imposture, he was the focus of a sensational trial that was held in Springfield,...

14. Roster Of 15th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry - Gilchrist, Joy: hcpd.lewisco@westvirginia.com
This is a copy of a roster that I did two years ago - before I had gone through the service records and ascertained their "true" records. Sometimes men appear more than once. Sometimes they were of a higher or lower rank than listed here. Also - remem ber that the adjutants were notoriously poor spellers and sometimes the soldiers couldn't spell their own names (let alone write them).

15. Movements of the 24th Iowa Infantry - Logan, Brig. Gen. Guy E., Adjutant General
Roster of Iowa Soldiers in the War of the Rebellion, together with Historical Sketches of Volunteer Organizations, 1861-1866. Taken from Vol. III, 24th Regiment - Infantry.

16. Civil War Units File: Unit Designations by States (Federal and Confederate: version 7.0): CSA States N-V - Botteron, Carol: botteron@alum.mit.edu
The purpose of the CWUNITS file is to let people list the units they are interested in and have at least some information on (from pension records, books, etc.). Typically the contact person had an ancestor who was in the unit, but re-enactors, history buffs, et al are welcome. (This is _not_ a file of re-enactment units.) If you see a listing for a unit you are interested in, you can send the contact person email and share information. The idea is not necessarily to find people with the same ancestor; people can share info on what action the unit...
