The Arnaldo Araújo Research Centre (CEAA) in collaboration with the Department of Theatre and Film and the Film and Audiovisual Degree of Oporto Artistic School (ESAP) organizes an international conference dedicated to the cinema and audiovisual linked with the 10th International Exhibition of Film Schools (MIFEC). This conference will seek to explore the effects of rapidly changing technologies and platforms on the study of different issues in film and television. How postgraduate researchers in a context of change face the relationship between cinema and narrative. How new technologies do affects the way that film schools develop new pedagogies and methods in...

  3. Uma Escola Chamada Salazar?

    PIMENTEL, Jorge Cunha
From the late 1920’s and throughout the 1930’s Rogério de Azevedo carried on two apparently conflicting careers simultaneously accepting private commissions (mostly in Oporto) and public works (in Northern and Central Portugal). Astride the generations of Marques da Silva, his teacher, and Januário Godinho, a trainee at the time taking part in various projects at Rogério de Azevedo’s offices, his work developed through various programmes in which the sense for the site is never irrelevant and the architectonic object is never indisputably autonomous; it is a process of free interpretation reconciling modernity and tradition, linked together around the site and...

  4. Post-Modernity as a Cultural Weapon

    ALMEIDA, Pedro Vieira de
1)-Today’s idea of a cultural “Globalisation” represents a concept mainly coined in a network of strong political interests oriented to the effective cultural control all over the planet. Though seldom avowed, nevertheless we could easily gather some sound statements that seem to confirm the correctness of this interpretation. (-Jameson-Leach-Argan- Said –Maalouf-). 2)-Particularly in architectural fields a skilful stratagem underlying the reasoning that supports the idea of a Globalisation, is the ambiguous way of understanding the historical periods considered , and designations employed, so I think useful to reorganise all of them, in order to rid away almost every ambiguity(-Le Goff- Nesbit-Eisenman- Betts-) 3)-...

  5. Notes on the Potency of Architecture

CUBERO, Josefina Gonzàlez; MARTÍN, Noemí Vicente
Since the modern age, ‘potency’ has been an attribute associated with the notion of beauty sought by certain architects. Potency is understood as clear and resounding, geometrically dominant, and prevailing over its surroundings. This attribute has carried down to the present as an end in and of itself in works that continued in the tradition of modernist architectural conception and that purport to define contemporary architectural design. However, there are several factors in the present that have varied and prevented ideas of the past from being carbon copied. These factors have to do with th e form’s material and therefore...

  6. From the City to the Building 'Approaches to Modernity' la Tourette as a Landmark

    VIRTUDES, Ana Lídia
The architectural and urbanistic practices have always been linked with society and the epoch in which they occur. The arrival of modernism brought about changes in the production of architecture and spatial planning, in the manner in which they are projected. On the one hand, the building practices were changed due to the introduction of concrete and pillar, the crossbeam and the slab system, which became an omnipresent duality (architecture vs structure) in modernist architecture. On the other hand, the aspects of space and nature gained a new dimension in terms of urbanistic practices, with the Charter of Athens, focusing...

  11. Uma empresa feita cidade

    SALES, Fátima

    PIMENTEL, Jorge Cunha

  13. Hidroeléctrica do Cávado 1945-1964.

Among many transformations that occur in the territory, some are provoked conscientiously and correspond to cultural and social acts, nominally public works, as there are the hydroelectric exploitations and the human settlements that follow them. In the urban and territorial landscape developed for the five exploitations of HICA analysis, it’s evident in the architecture the pragmatism of its conception and the Januário Godinho architecture sensibility “to the landscape rusticity”. As per the specific character of each of the pre settled programs for each place, the architect made the correlation with a distinct solution “in the perfect balance between the classicism and the...

  14. João Andresen: o Projecto da Casa Ruben A

    PINTO, Miguel Moreira
The paper approaches the house of Montedor (Viana do Castelo), which was designed by the architect João Andresen for the writer Ruben A. in the late 1940’s. The current context of adherence to and assertion of a modern approach within Portuguese architecture explains the general interpretation of a specific program, the priority given to functional aspects as well as the way a building relates by opposition to the landscape. The confrontation both with models of Brazilian architecture and proposals by Corbusier (particularly the project of the house Errázuriz, in Chile) enable us to confirm all its rational and modern characteristics,...

  15. Complexidade, os Limites do Controlo

    FAUSTINO, Carlos
This paper aims at developing the concept of Complexity within what could be called ‘Generative Art’. After laying out the limits of Algorithmic Complexity and Effective Complexity, including practical examples, a critical position will be developed on the two opposite poles in contrast with an eventual intermediate point. On the one hand, a structured position with rules that are essentially based on symmetry; on the other, complete randomness. The pole that corresponds to complete randomness will be taken into fuller consideration – as contemporary artists, such as John Cage, have chosen this factor more often.

  17. "Modernism and the Portuguese Teatro de Revista"

    PALINHOS, Jorge
Largely due to the conservatism of audiences and critics, Portuguese theatre was mostly indifferent, if not downright hostile, to the avant-garde theatre coming from elsewhere in Europe. Therefore, naturalistic theatre and historical drama were the staple of Portuguese theatres until the 1950s, with the only exception of the plays of Almada Negreiros and symbolist plays by Fernando Pessoa, Raul Brandão and António Patrício. However, modernism found its place on stage in one of the most typical Portuguese theatre forms: «Revista à Portuguesa», the Portuguese revue theatre, which welcomed the first generation of Portuguese modernist painters to work as set and costume...

  19. Specific Architecture Rooted in thr Country. Survey on Vernacular Architecture and Tourism Development

    SIMON, Mariann
After the failed revolution in 1956 an intensive development began around the Lake Balaton in Hungary. It was a manifestation of political détente but was driven also by the economic interest, as an investment in tourism. The new regional plan included a survey on monuments, which was extended also on vernacular built heritage. The paper presents the findings of the survey and compares them with the planned and realised buildings, and with the architects’ manifestations. The investigation includes public buildings which gave the bulk of building activity in the first period, but it analysis also the awardwinning designs of weekend houses...

  20. Jeff Wall: Double Self-Portrait

    NEVES, Eduarda
