Library of Congress Open Archive Initiative Repository 1 (114,502 recursos)
This is an extensive repository containing material relating to the American experience, a large portion of it digitised from the Library of Congress' collections. It includes, but is not limited to, images, monographs, sheet music, sound and visual recordings, pamphlets and posters. It is subdivided into over 100 thematic collections based on original documentation format, subject, author or donor. The site also benefits from an extensive range of background documentation and information on the creation, maintenance and development of this repository. Individual sections of the collection are periodically highlighted, and materials advising on the use of this repository's contents in a classroom situation are also provided. Each major subsection has a discrete site design and interface, although they are all part of the overarching whole.

89. View of the Gorenflo Canning Co., Biloxi, Miss., taken at 7 A.M. Many tiny workers here, some of whom began to arrive at the factory as early as 5 o'clock, an hour before they were allowed to begin work, and long before daylight on a damp-foggy day. The whistle had blown and they came and stood around merely to hold their places. When the "catch" has been good, they begin work early, but today it was not good so they were waiting for daylight. In this group I ascertained the ages of a few, as follows, 1 child of 6 years, 1 of 7, 2 of 8, 1 of 10 and there were many more. See report also. Location: Biloxi, Mississippi. - Hine, Lewis Wickes, 1874-1940, photographer.

96. Mother and children hulling strawberries at Johnson's Hulling Station. Cyral (in baby cart) is 2 yrs. old this May and works steadily hulling berries. At times Cyral would rest his little head on his arm and fall asleep for a few minutes and then wake up, commencing all over to hull berries. This is an extreme case - by no means typical and while it was found in this investigation that children 3, 4, 5 yrs. were accustomed to start out before sun-up to pick berries, we have not found many cases such as this.
