  2. Data Integration and Record Matching: An Austrian Contribution to Research in Official Statistics

    Denk, Michaela; Hackl, Peter
Data integration techniques are one of the core elements of DIECOFIS, an EU-funded international research project that aims at developing a methodology for the construction of a system of indicators on competitiveness and fiscal impact on enterprise performance. Data integration is also of major interest for official statistics agencies as a means of using available information more efficiently and improving the quality of the agency's products. The Austrian member of the project consortium comprises university departments, representatives from the Bundesanstalt Statistik Austria, from the Statistical Department of the Austrian Economic Chamber, and from ec3, a non-profit research corporation. This paper gives a short report on DIECOFIS in general and on...

  6. Knowledge distribution among market experts: A closer look into the efficiency of information gathering for innovation projects

Lüthje, Christian; Lettl, Christopher; Herstatt, Cornelius
Information gathering from sources outside the company plays a critical role in most innovation projects. Particularly, it seems promising to approach external market experts to develop an indepth understanding of current use problems, changing customer needs and trends for new product solutions. When planning expert interviews, firms are confronted with the question whether knowledge is distributed rather homogeneously or heterogeneously ("scattered") among a pool of experts. This issue strongly determines how many experts need to be interviewed in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of a given search field for innovation. In the present paper we analyse expert interviews that...

  7. How Communities Support Innovative Activities: An Exploration of Assistance and Sharing Among End-Users

    Franke, Nikolaus; Shah, Sonali
This study contributes to our understanding of the innovation process by bringing attention to and investigating the process by which innovators outside of firms obtain innovation-related resources and assistance. This study is the first to explicitly examine how user-innovators gather the information and assistance they need to develop their ideas and how they share and diffuse the resulting innovations. Specifically, this exploratory study analyzes the context within which individuals who belong to voluntary special-interest communities develop sports-related consumer product innovations. We find that these individuals often prototype novel sports-related products and that they receive assistance in developing their innovations from...

  8. Entstehung und Koordination von virtuellen Unternehmen

    Bauer, Bernhard
In times of decreasing profits and a low level of economic growth companies are looking for new solutions for their organizational problems. Networks are a very important way to accomplish advantages of intercompany job-sharing and realization of comprehensive synergetic potentials. In this connection dynamic networks are more and more mentioned in scientific papers. One type of these networks is a virtual corporation. A virtual corporation is a temporary network of independent companies. They are linked by information technology in order to share skills, costs and access to one another's markets. The main goal is to execute a wide array of...

  9. Smoothed Transformed Density Rejection

    Leydold, Josef; Hörmann, Wolfgang
There are situations in the framework of quasi-Monte Carlo integration where nonuniform low-discrepancy sequences are required. Using the inversion method for this task usually results in the best performance in terms of the integration errors. However, this method requires a fast algorithm for evaluating the inverse of the cumulative distribution function which is often not available. Then a smoothed version of transformed density rejection is a good alternative as it is a fast method and its speed hardly depends on the distribution. It can easily be adjusted such that it is almost as good as the inversion method. For importance...

  10. Faber-Krahn Type Inequalities for Trees

    Biyikoglu, Türker; Leydold, Josef
The Faber-Krahn theorem states that among all bounded domains with the same volume in Rn (with the standard Euclidean metric), a ball that has lowest first Dirichlet eigenvalue. Recently it has been shown that a similar result holds for (semi-)regular trees. In this article we show that such a theorem also hold for other classes of (not necessarily non-regular) trees. However, for these new results no couterparts in the world of the Laplace-Beltrami-operator on manifolds are known. (author's abstract)

  11. Improved Perfect Slice Sampling

    Hörmann, Wolfgang; Leydold, Josef
Perfect slice sampling is a method to turn Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) samplers into exact generators for independent random variates. The originally proposed method is rather slow and thus several improvements have been suggested. However, two of them are erroneous. In this article we give a short introduction to perfect slice sampling, point out incorrect methods, and give a new improved version of the original algorithm. (author's abstract)

  12. An Error in the Kinderman-Ramage Method and How to Fix It

Tirler, Günter; Dalgaard, Peter; Hörmann, Wolfgang; Leydold, Josef
An error in the Gaussian random variate generator by Kinderman and Ramage is described that results in the generation of random variates with an incorrect distribution. An additional statement that corrects the original algorithm is given. (author's abstract)

  13. Automatic Nonuniform Random Variate Generation in R

    Tirler, Günter; Leydold, Josef
Random variate genration is an important tool in statistical computing. Many programms for simulation or statistical computing (e.g. R) provide a collection of random variate generators for many standard distributions. However, as statistical modeling has become more sophisticated there is demand for larger classes of distributions. Adding generators for newly required distribution seems not to be the solution to this problem. Instead so called automatic (or black-box) methods have been developed in the last decade for sampling from fairly large classes of distributions with a single piece of code. For such algorithms a data about the distributions must be given;...

  14. FlexMix: A general framework for finite mixture models and latent class regression in R

    Leisch, Friedrich
Flexmix implements a general framework for fitting discrete mixtures of regression models in the R statistical computing environment: three variants of the EM algorithm can be used for parameter estimation, regressors and responses may be multivariate with arbitrary dimension, data may be grouped, e.g., to account for multiple observations per individual, the usual formula interface of the S language is used for convenient model specification, and a modular concept of driver functions allows to interface many di_erent types of regression models. Existing drivers implement mixtures of standard linear models, generalized linear models and model-based clustering. Flexmix provides the E-step and...

  15. The market areas of Austrian universities

    Maier, Gunther
This paper uses a dataset of first-time students in Austria, which shows among other information the home location and the university location of those students. Since Austria has a free access university system, where universities have to accept high school graduates, these data reflect the preferences of these students. From a university's point of view, the data reflect the area from where they can attract students, i.e. the market areas of the universities. Currently, the market areas of Austrian universities are largely unknown. It is also unknown whether the universities serve spatial markets like a spatial monopolist or compete on...

  16. Enhancing corporate sustainability. A framework based evaluation tool for sustainable development.

    Langer, Markus E.; Schön, Aloisia
Corporate sustainable development is placed between simplified interpretations and an overabundance of complexity and requirements that hampers implementation. Stakeholder Relations Management is one approach for the operationalization of sustainable development on the corporate level, which enables the inclusion of aspects of sustainability into corporate decision-making in a pragmatic way. However, stakeholder pressure and economic constraints lead companies to adopt only a small segment of the concept of sustainable development. Therefore, a referential framework is needed in order to regard corporate initiatives within the wider context of sustainable development on the theoretical level. The framework of sustainable development presented here, which...

  17. Implementing evaluation in the context of sustainable development (III). The integration of aspects of sustainable development at evaluations with sustainable development as part of a Tool Box.

Langer, Markus E.; Schön, Aloisia; Egger-Steiner, Michaela; Hubauer, Irmgard
In the context of sustainable development, evaluations have particularly high relevance as complex issues have to be dealt with generally over an extended period of time. Furthermore, there is a growing demand to evaluate against the concept of sustainable development. Especially evaluations with sustainable development are a rather new type of evaluation, as the source of its evaluation questions and the criteria applied are rooted in the concept of sustainable development. Sustainability of a specific project or process is often highly case specific as sustainable development is determined by many often unique issues. However, evaluations would be highly inefficient, if...

  20. Werbemitteldesign und Markenpolitik in Versicherungsunternehmen. Eine explorative Studie.

    Kuzmany, Katrin
