  1. Estimates and inferences of knowledge capital impacts on regional total factor productivity

LeSage, James P.; Fischer, Manfred M.
This paper explores the contribution of knowledge capital to total factor productivity differences among regions within a regression framework. We provide an econometric derivation of the relationship and show that the presence of latent/unobservable regional knowledge capital leads to a model relationship that includes both spatial and technological dependence. This model specification accounts for both spatial and technological dependence between regions, which allows us to quantify spillover impacts arising from both types of interaction. Sample data on 198 NUTS-2 regions spanning the period from 1997 to 2002 was used to empirically test the model, to measure both direct and indirect effects of knowledge capital on regional total factor...

  3. The Cause for Action? Decision Making and Priority Setting in Integrated Care. A Multidisciplinary Approach.

    Stein, Katharina Viktoria
The expectations of patients have dramatically changed since the introduction of the first public health services more than a decade ago, as have the surrounding conditions a health system has to tackle. The grown health systems of the industrialised countries counter the challenges of an ageing society, technological advancement and chronic disease by a state of constant reform, which has been present for the last few years, without the abolition of the basic principles of affordability, accessibility and solidarity. One solution to answer all these expectations and requirements is so-called "integrated care", a patient-centred model, which propagates better processes, coordination...

  4. Efficiency, Leverage and Exit: The Role of Information Asymmetry in Concentrated Industries Human Capital Investment and the Completion of Risky R&D Projects Migration Options for Skilled Labor and Optimal Investment in Human Capital

    Siyahhan, Baran
Efficiency, Leverage and Exit: The Role of Information Asymmetry in Concentrated Industries This paper develops a real options model of imperfect competition with asymmetric information that analyzes firms' exit decisions. Optimal exit decision is linked to firm characteristics such as financial leverage and efficiency. The model shows that informational asymmetries can lead more efficient and less leveraged firms to leave the product market prematurely. It also demonstrates how firm efficiency can increase debt capacity relative to rival firms. The model also has implications for firm risk and asset returns. Specifically, the paper shows that, when there is information asymmetry among...

  5. Heterogeneous productivity in voluntary public good provision - an experimental analysis

Fellner, Gerlinde; Iida, Yoshio; Kröger, Sabine; Seki, Erika
This article experimentally examines voluntary contributions when group members' marginal returns to the public good vary. The experiment implements two marginal return types, low and high, and uses the information that members have about the heterogeneity to identify the applied contribution norm. We find that norms vary with the information environment. If agents are aware of the heterogeneity, contributions increase in general. However, high types contribute more than low types when contributions can be linked to the type of the donor but contribute less otherwise. Low types, on the other hand, contribute more than high types when group members are aware...
