  1. Capital liberalization and the US external imbalance

    Prades, Elvira; Rabitsch, Katrin
Differences in financial systems are often named as a prime candidate for the current state of global imbalances. This paper focuses on cross-country heterogeneity in access to international financial markets that derives from the presence of capital controls and argues that the process of capital liberalization over the past decades can explain a substantial fraction of US net external liabilities. We present a simple two-country model with an internationally traded bond, in which capital controls are reflected in the presence of borrowing and lending constraints on that bond. In a US versus the rest of the world (RoW) scenario, we perform experiments that are largely consistent with...

  3. New Foundations for Ecological Economics

    Spash, Clive L.
Ecological economics has been repeatedly described as transdisciplinary and open to including everything from positivism to relativism. I argue for a revision and rejection of this position in favour of realism and reasoned critique. Looking into the ontological presuppositions and considering an epistemology appropriate for ecological economics to meaningfully exist requires rejecting the form of methodological pluralism which has been advocated since the start of this journal. This means being clear about the differences in our worldview (or paradigm) from others and being aware of the substantive failures of orthodox economics in addressing reality. This paper argues for a fundamental review of the basis upon which ecological economics...

    Neumayr, Michaela; Schober, Christian

  7. Latent Dirichlet Allocation in R

    Ponweiser, Martin
Topic models are a new research field within the computer sciences information retrieval and text mining. They are generative probabilistic models of text corpora inferred by machine learning and they can be used for retrieval and text mining tasks. The most prominent topic model is latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), which was introduced in 2003 by Blei et al. and has since then sparked off the development of other topic models for domain-specific purposes. This thesis focuses on LDA's practical application. Its main goal is the replication of the data analyses from the 2004 LDA paper ``Finding scientific topics'' by Thomas Griffiths...
