  2. Quantitative Literacy - Problems that Motivate

    In this article, I present a selection of problem types, with examples, that have been used with some success to motivate the topics in a quantitative literacy class so that learners may begin doing mathematics without period of discussion beforehand. In their original use, the setting for these problems is a small class at a large liberal arts college, but I hope that the work described within will still have some value for teachers of high school students, especially in classes where many learners struggle to appreciate mathematics.

  3. Problem-Solving and Reading Strategies for ACT® Preparation

    A new path to graduation has been instituted for high school students in Ohio. Students now have the option to graduate by showing college readiness on a national college entrance exam. One such exam is the ACT®. This article gives methods and activities, from an intervention conducted during the 2012-2013 academic year, that merge problem-solving and reading strategies to help students prepare for the mathematics portion of the ACT®.

  4. Summing Squares and Cubes of Integers

    Recreational mathematics can provide students with opportunities to explore mathematics in meaningful ways. Elementary number theory is one area of mathematics that lends itself readily to recreational mathematics. In this article, the author provides two examples from elementary number theory with results that students might find surprising, and which may be used to motivate them to study additional topics from number theory.

  5. Weighted Dice: A Physical Application for Probability Studies

    Conventional dice were altered by the insertion of weights for the purpose of creating dice that do not behave according to the conventional rules of probability. The performance of these dice was then characterized by students in the classroom through several hundred experimental trials. Each trial involved one of the following: a one-die roll, a two-dice roll sum, or a three-dice roll sum. Results from these student trials were combined into one large database. These results with weighted dice were then compared against theoretical calculations with conventional dice for one-die rolls, two-dice roll sums, and three-dice roll sums.

  6. Multiple Ways to Persevere: Liar's Bingo

    Some readers may already be familiar with the mathematical task of solving Liar's Bingo. In this article, the authors will share the different ways Liar's Bingo has provided both the authors and their students the opportunity to persevere on multiple levels as they and students try to explain the different mathematical patterns that emerge in the strips. The authors will share some extensions to Liar's Bingo that readers can use in their classrooms and some of the observed patterns and some sample explanations. Spoiler alert: the authors have not found explanations for all the observed patterns. (Yet!)

  7. Students' Misconceptions in Mathematics: Analysis of Remedies and What Research Says

    It is common knowledge that students of all grade levels have misconceptions regarding various concepts in mathematics. This article is focused on analyzing this issue due to its importance in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Misconceptions from two areas of mathematics are presented; these include operations with fractions (arithmetic) and addition of exponents (algebra). In each area, the explanation of the misconception, steps that teachers can take to address the problem, and highlights of previous research relating to the misconception are presented.
