  1. Bone Regeneration: the use of biomaterials

    Henriques, Rita Mónica Jorge
The use of bone grafts is recommended in numerous surgeries. The autograft is considered to be the technique of choice in bone fusions, for small gaps and in critical defects given the properties of osteoconduction, osteogenisis and osteoinduction. Regardless of its unique characteristics, there are an increasing substitution with synthetic bone due to the high morbidity of the harvest and limitations of the volume of autografts. Also the well known disadvantages of allografts, such as potential risk for transmission of infectious diseases and the induction of adverse immune reactions, have driven the development of synthetic bone grafts for bone regeneration...

  2. Exposure assessment of infants to Aflatoxin M1 in breast milk and maternal social-demographical and food consumption determinants

    Filipe Bogalho Pinto Ferreira, Fernando
Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites of fungi that have toxic effects on both humans and animals. Aflatoxins are mycotoxins produced by some strains of fungus, such as Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) which can be transmitted to newborns via breast milk, is a hydrolyzed metabolite of Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) that is ingested along with contaminated food. AFM1 is classified as “possibly carcinogenic agent for Human” (group 2B IARC). The occurrence of AFM1 in maternal milk and the degree of exposure of infants to this toxin were studied. The correlation between the concentration of AFM1 and basic socio-demographic factors and the consumption of certain categories of food...

  3. Are gastrointestinal parasites a possible threat to an endangered autochthonous portuguese sheep breed?

    Ruano, Zita Martins
In the Northeast of Portugal, the sheep system production is extensive, with use of stubble cereals, natural pasture and other poor forage resources. Churra Galega Mirandesa autochthonous sheep breed is well adapted to geographic and climatic conditions of the plateau and cliffs of the Douro River, Portugal. Sheep reared in extensive system are affected by a diversity of gastrointestinal parasites, causing an enormous impact on its health and productivity, which can be especially threatening in an endangered breed like this. The aim of the present study was to determine the diversity, prevalence and burden of gastrointestinal parasites in Churra Galega...
