Serra, Juan; Torres, Ana; Llopis, Jorge; Villaplana, Ramón
[EN] During restoration of the Torres de Quart in Valencia (15th C.) some puzzling yet very beautiful graffiti were discovered. They consist of a set of drawings containing motifs commonly found in other medieval defensive buildings: architectural features, crosses, letters, floral motifs, etc. But what makes these so striking is the naturalism of the zoomorphic representations, with scenes of fish and shoals of fish in a very engaging style. We discuss the possible interpretation of these graffiti and why they appear on the southernmost entranceway to the city, against the cultural backdrop and customs of a post-medieval Valencia.

[EN] Vitruvius trio debate about the latin terms firmitas, utilitas, venustas from Ten Books on Architecture has had its ups and downs. The influence of the tripartite schematization seems to be graphically present in a xvith century drawing by Lázaro de Velasco, preserved on Cáceres from the early twentieth century. This pattern is verified by the author’s own comments and other annotations on the original Vitruvius’ text. The access to parallel graphic outlines from a triangular composition lets an approach to its genesis. Reference to the classic knowledge and trinity catholic symbolism showed by Lázaro de Velasco comments exemplify a...

[EN] Within the multi-faceted work of Lázsló Moholy-Nagy the paper focuses on the activity he carried out after his arrival in Berlin in 1922, where he came in contact with Expressionism, Dadaism and Constructivism before joining Bauhaus as a teacher. More specifically, the focus is a series of theoretical manifestos and pictorial works carried out between 1922 and 1928, grouped together under the name of Kinetic-Constructive System, in which he relied on the collaboration of his compatriots Alfréd Kemény and Stefan Sebök. In these works a utopian architecture is described, destined to activate the senses of people in its interaction...

  5. Redibujando la puerta de las armas

    Martín Martín, Adelaida
[EN] The following article is a part of my doctoral thesis entitled: “De la QASABAT al-QADIMA a la ALCAZABA ROJA”, which provides a study on the Alhambra ́s Alcazaba, drawn up thanks to the wide and various literature available. In this context, I focused my research on the “Puerta de las Armas”, which was a key element in the life of the Alcazaba and the Ciudadela de la Alhambra. In order to know the universal values of the Alcazaba, we analyze one of its elements as a defensive construction model which is used as a reference and example of military...

  6. Lo abstracto, Aalto y el dibujo

    Manzano Jurado, Josemaría
[EN] Entering into the abstract imagination of Alvar Aalto by analysing the article published in 1947 in the magazine Domus, entitled Architecture and Concrete Art. From the imaginative experiment of the Viipuri Library and his previous oneiric drawings, and the naturalist metaphors regarding salmon and its life journey, Aalto opens up and reveals his way of thinking without renouncing his rationalist orthodoxy

  7. La tercera directriz: la equi-distribución. Parametrización de superficies regladas en la arquitectura

Crespo Cabillo, Isabel; Àvila Casademont, Genís
[EN] The figures analyzed in the thesis “Graphic control surfaces and ruled transition forms”have a clear the use, in practice, of surface forms that do not correspond to any geometric figure listed. Geometric forms and in particular ruled surfaces, respond to mathematical approaches that relate the placement of a line moving along two guidelines following a law. This law can be either a third given guideline, a plan in which all lines are parallel to (Catalan surfaces) or a fixed inclination (cone director). This article argues that this third law can be the equal distribution of the straight lines along...

[EN] The territory covered by the city of Granada has stimulated the admiration of all those that have known it along its history, as is shown by the various accounts and panoramic views. The city was strategically established in the meeting point between the last spurs of the Sierra Nevada and the wide alluvial plain that forms the Vega of Granada, being both inseparable parts of the landscape that characterizes the city. The first geometric maps of this complex territory were developed with the cartographic advances of the nineteenth century, developing as strategic documents for its control or to quantify...

  9. La mirada atenta. Aproximaciones a la creación arquitectónica

    Alba Dorado, María Isabel
[EN] This article aims to reflect on the importance of the eye in the creative process of architectural projects. All creation is based on a watchful eye, which acts as an instrument of knowledge and reflection; an active and creative eye that contains a thought. But creation is also in the hands of those who put these thoughts down onto paper and materialise them. In this sense, teaching architectural design should fundamentally consider educating the eye, so that students develop a perceptual ability allowing them to address all kinds of architectural projects creatively

[EN] The retablo-façade of the church of “Nuestra Señora de la Asunción” in Vistabella del Maestrazgo (Castellón) is one of the most important Renaissance elements in the Valencian architectura. The objective of this article is to carry out a graphic and historical study of this piece. To get this, it has carried out an architectural graphic survey and it has compiled bibliographic and archival information, to examine the formal, geometric, metrological and metric aspects of the main portal of the temple. All this has allowed us to find the original trace, the modulation used based on Valencian span, the composition...

[EN] We defend the idea of durability in time of population centres, elements and structures of the huerta, the fertile agricultural area around the city of Valencia, through rooted concepts, such as tradition and, especially, the unceasing daily routine of human beings. Starting from this perception, we consider the existence of permanent traces on the territory that allow us to establish hypotheses about the settlement and organization of the territory, from its origins. From this paradigm, we hope to establish, relying on the morphological study as a working tool, a plausible argument on the primitive traces of the organization of...

[EN] In 1493, Leonardo da Vinci proposed an ambitious plan for the transformation of Milan, consisting of the construction of ten new cities in order to solve overcrowding and insalubrity problems at the Lombard capital. With this project, which links urban growth dynamics with interior reorganization processes, Leonardo achieved a synthesis of a long search between the utopian of the new planned ideal city and the pragmatism of the renovation of the medieval cores within the values from the humanistic culture of the Renaissance. This article relates the singular strategy of the urban transformation proposed by Leonardo for Milan with his...

  13. El uso del color. Variaciones en los tejidos de Anni Albers

    Toral, Ana
[EN] The concept of ‘variation’ described by Josef Albers for the development of his educational methodology and extended in his reference work Interaction of color, shows a ligature to the construction process of Anni Albers’ textile reticle. It is a rigid support where it turns out physically impossible to mix colours. It is for this reason that Anni Albers research on weaving color is realized from highly stimulant resources

[EN] Andrés de Vandelvira personalizes the researcher who, from the deep knowledge and mastery of the craft, knew how to rehearse revolutionary architectural solutions that demonstrate the importance of the architects of southern Spain in the History of Architecture of the Renaissance. The detailed knowledge of the drawings of the method of slices allows us to reflect on the formal design systems tested by Vandelvira. However, some of the features of the solutions of this architect are the subject of intelligent manipulation of this basic logic. The need to solve constructive, structural, formal and compositional issues in the same moment, led to...

[EN] Displaying recent active occupation of public space by society, from the Arab Spring to the Hong Kong’s Revolution umbrellas in Hong Kong, through movements like Occupy Wall Street or 15-M, it seems necessary reading again text entitled Henri Lefebvre’s Le Droit Ville (The Right to the City) published in 1968 in which he argues, against abstraction, that space must be understood as the product of the social structure. This text will be introduced first in Britain and later in the United States by the architect Bernard Tschumi as an argument for the theory of Event Space and Action where...

[EN] The Casa de Armas, which occupied the northeast corner of the walled citadel of Valencia, has been, since its inception, one of the most outstanding fortified enclaves in the city. Since t he sixteenth century, various elements have been built around the L’Esperó tower to form a space primarily intended to the custody of the weapons of the Generalitat eighteenth century, with the advent of the Bourbon dynasty, the building suffered a major renovation process, among which the construction of a new bastion in a vertex of the Plaza de Predicadores had a great impact on the external image...

[EN] Jean Nouvel has been known for creating singular architectural objects. In his career there is an interest in «immaterial» architecture, either through the use of transparent, reflective elements and lighting effects, or through the fusion with nature. However, this effect is achieved more dramatically in digital renderings than in his built works. Thus, for Nouvel his graphic style is an instrument of seduction, resulting effective in international competitions and publications

Gimenez Mateu, Luis; Navarro Delgado, Isidro; Cabrera Guardiola, Alberto
[EN] The difficulty presented in the execution of “domical vault” or “ quatre punts” timbrel vaults with diagonal brickwork is that of the marking out with cladding tiles in the layering of the first rows, when setting the pace of the construction and joins. The continuity of the joins is a sign of the good execution of the vault, resembling a translational surface made by the curved movement of the two parallel falsework systems. Experience in the execution of this complex procedure proves that faults and errors appear as the initial joins are lost and it is not possible to...

[EN] Questions related with the developable surfaces theory have had a constant attention from the point of view of the Geometry. In recent years the employment of free forms and double curvature surfaces in Architecture have reported a noticeable development and the need of their constructive resolution and therefore geometric and graphic control have given new impulses to this question. Supported on the development of the digital technology applied to manufacturing and control of the form, we would have seen spectacular results. Using the advances allowed by CAD systems and especially by processing computational and parametrically some classical geometry topics,...

[EN] This article intends to explain that the different means of representation in architecture and planning, by hand, videos, renders, etc. have not only diverse technical qualities but also a different redescriptive power of the reality they represent. According to the dialogical theories by Mikhail Bakhtin and more recently by Alva Noe, these powers should be analyzed in each case and as a result of these analyses the experience and the learning processes involved can change. We will analyze some examples of these feedback processes
