  3. Representando la estructura. Reflexiones sobre la obra de Arthur Vierendeel “La construction architecturale en fonte, fer et acier”

    [EN] Arthur Vierendeel published his book “La construction architecturale en fonte, fer et acier” in 1902, in which he graphically described the constructive anatomy of what he considered to be the most significant buildings from the first stage of iron architecture. The aim of this article is to highlight the most relevant aspects of this little-known work which, nevertheless, has great historiographic value. In addition, the article attempts to approach Vierendeel’s drawings by emphasising and focussing on his conciliatory attitude towards the architect-engineer dichotomy that typified the 19th century.

The first selection comprises three publications by three architects/graphic artists who have each created a series of illustrations of leading architects, based on their graphic and architectural output.
