  1. RELATIVE EFFICIENCY OF LOCAL MEAL CONCENTRATE AND PELLETED FEED FOR FATTENING RABBITS IN TROPICAL CONDITIONS. INTERACTION WITH RABBIT'S ORIGIN""

    LUKEFAHR, M.; Lebas, F.; Djago, A.Y.; Coudert, P.
[EN] Two-day-old suckling rabbits of a selected strain (NZW) imported from a temperate country (France) were suckled in a tropical country (Benin) by does of the local strain (CECURI). The growth performance of !he imported and native rabbits was compared after weaning at 31 days, in a 8 weeks fattening trial. Four groups were constituted: 2 x 24 weanlings of each strain were fed either with the local feed (coarsely ground meal + green forage) or with a balanced pelleted diet imported from France. No morbidity was observed during the trial. NZW and CECURI rabbits had the same growth rate when fed pelleted feed : 29.6 and 28.5 g/day...

  4. RABBIT PRODUCTION IN UGANDA : POTENTIAL VERSUS OPPORTUNITY

    LUKEFAHR, S.D.
[EN] In only the past ten years, meat rabbit production in Uganda has been actively prometed by enthusiasts, via the "Rabbit Craze", as a get rich quick business opportunity with unlimited potential markets, both domestic and abroad. In Kampala, the capital of Uganda, the infantile rabbit industry can generally be described as a semiintensive, commercial production system based on high costs of investment (breeding stock, shelter, and wire hutches) and operation (pelleted feed and labor), and non-realized profitability. Further, purebred seedstock producers sell animals at exorbitant prices (25,000-70,000 USH(Uganda shillings) [exchange rate: 1,225 USH = 1 USO]), and feed companies sell pelleted feed at high prices (300-400 USH/kg or 0.24-0.33 USD/kg)....

  7. MODELE DE REPRODUCTION EXPERIMENTALE DE L'ENTEROCOLITE EPIZOOTIQUE CHEZ DES LAPINS EOPS

    LICOIS, D.; VAUTHEROT, J.F.; COUDERT, P.; DAMBRINE, G.
[EN] Sixty-four 4 to 6-week-old SPF (specified pathogen free) rabbits were distributed into two equal groups. The first one (TC) was treated with injections of dexametasone (4 mg/kg) during 3 weeks, at the rate of 3 injections per week. The second one was only given satine solution (NT). After 19 days of treatment all the animals were orally inoculated with digestive product able to induce (EER). The results showed, before inoculation, a strong growth depression in the TC group: live weight reduced by 24% with regard to the NT group. During the 9 days of observation following inoculation, an important increase of the mortality was observed in the...

  10. GROWTH PERFORMANCE UNTIL WEANING OF YOUNG RABBITS BORN IN FRANCE AND FOSTERED IN BENIN AT 3 DAYS OF AGE, IN COMPARISON WITH LOCAL RABBITS

    Kpodekon, M.; Adehan, R.; Djago, A.Y.; Lebas, F.; Coudert, P.
[EN] A total of 80 two-day-old suckling rabbits of a selected New Zealand White rabbit strain imported from a temperate country (France) were suckled in a tropical country (Benin) by foster does of the local population. The growth performance of the imported rabbits and of 81 native rabbits suckled by the same does was compared. No morbidity was observed in both groups. Growth rate was identical in both groups up to 21 days i.e. the end of the exclusive milk feeding : 10.2 and 10.5 g/day for imported and native rabbits respectively. During the last period befare weaning (21 to 31 days) the group of imported sucklings had...

  13. GENETIC EVALUATION OF FUR TRAITS IN NEW ZEALAND WHITE AND CALIFORNIAN RABBITS RAISED ON HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURE

    Khalil, M.H.; Ibrahim, M.K.; El-Deghadi, A.S.
[EN] An experiment on New Zealand White (NZW) and Californian (CAL) rabbits was carried out to evaluate genetically postweaning coat traits of these two breeds raised under hot conditions. Data on 24680 and 10549 fibers collected from 1234 NZW and 520 CAL weaned rabbits were used, respectively. At 8 and 12 weeks of age, post-weaning coat traits included average hair length in cm (HL), hair diameter (μm) in down hair (HDD) and guard hair (HDG), medulla diameter (μm) in down hair (MDD) and guard hair (MDG), and medullation percent in down hair (PMD) and guard hair (PMG). Variance components and sire heritabilities were estimated for these traits using Restricted Maximum...

  16. FATS IN RABBIT NUTRITION : A REVIEW

    MAERTENS, L.
[EN] Effects of inclusion of fat oil or full-fat seeds in rabbit diets are reviewed. Rabbits kits are able to ingest and to efficiently digest large quantities of milk lipids. About 40% of the milk fat consists of medium-chain fatty acids (C8:0 and C10:0). Rabbits digest dietary lipids in a way comparable to other monogastric animals. With the exception of tallow, added fat or oil is nearly 100% digestible, especially at low levels of inclusion. The dietary inclusion of fats or full-fat soybeans is well accepted by the rabbits and does not provoke palatability problems. Growth rate of fryers is commonly not influenced by dietary fat addition but, due...

  19. EFFECTS OF PROSTAGLANDIN F2a AND ITS ANALOGS ON PLASMA ESTRADIOL 17-B AND PROGESTERONE LEVELS IN DOE RABBITS

    Negatu, Z.; McNitt, J.I.; Simon, G.; Mellad, K.E.
[EN] To assess the effect of prostaglandin Fa:,and two of its analogs on plasma estradiol-17p and progesterone levels in the immediate post partum period, 19 primiparous New Zealand White does were injected on day 29 of pregnancy with prostaglandin F21x (Lutalyse: ®Upjohn; 4 does), cloprostenol (Estrumate: ®Mobay Corp.; 5 does), fenprostalene (Bovilene: ®Syntex Animal Health; 4 does), or sterile saline as a control (6 does). Treatment with prostaglandin F21x and the two analogs shortened the gestation period by more than one day when compared to the saline treated group (p<0.05) but there were no effects of treatment on the number of kits bom, number of kits bom alive or...
