  1. STUDIES ON THE QUALITY OF REX RABBIT FUR

    [EN] The skin of Rex rabbit is usually used as fur, which has characteristics of softness, smoothness and beauty. The results of our study show that the skin area of a five months old Rex rabbit is 950-1000 cm2 . The hair density on the skin is 15000 to 38000 fibres/cm2 . The diameter of hair fibre is 18-19 μm. The proportion of coarse hair is 6-7 %, and the proportion of fine hair is 93-94 %. The length of hair fibre is 1.3-2.2 cm. The thickness of the skin is 1.8-2.1 mm.

  3. PLASMA ALBUMIN MEASUREMENTS IN NEW ZEALAND WHITE RABBITS.

    [EN] Following reports in the literature of problems with serum albumin measurements using bromocresol green dye binding methods, the method was re-examined using fifty rabbit plasma samples and solutions of different rabbit fractionated proteins. The value found in this study (albumin : 33 ± 2 g/I) was generally lower than in most of the other studies (27 to 43 g/I) and the ranges narrower. None of the samples analysed gave values for albumin which were higher than those for total protein (53 ± 3 g/I).

    [EN] Two experiments were conducted on 132 fertile females of New Zealand White (NZW) and Californian (Cal) rabbits. The first experiment aimed to study the mating frequency and/or spermatozoa number effects on conception rate (GR), litter size and litter weight at birth. Six groups were designed to cover all possible combinations between O, 1 or 2 matings of vasectomized buck (SB) and 1 or 2 matings of fertile buck. Each group consisted of 6 NZW and 6 Cal does, for a total of 72 females. The studied characteristics were insignificantly affected by groups or breeds. The overall means were 79.2 % GR, 6.5 youngs per litter and 294 g litter weight...

Mexican rabbit production has 2 very different components : the large and intermediary segment with few rabbit farms for which the size varies between 300 and 3.000 does/farm ; the rural segment representing the overwhelming part of rabbit production which is made up of many little back yard farms oriented towards in-house consumption. One hundred-thirty-five weaned rabbits, caged per three , were assigned to a complete block design and fed one of the experimental diets ad libitum between days 35 and 69 of age.
