141. Comparison of satellite rainfall data with observations from gauging station networks - Hughes, D.A.
This paper reports on a preliminary analysis of the potential for using satellite derived rainfall data through a comparison with available gauge data for four basins in the southern Africa region.

142. The Post: 15 years of journalism with a conscience - Banda, Fackson
This article celebrates the 15-year existence of the Post newspaper in Zambia, citing its unique niche as a purveyor of conscientious journalism.

143. The general election in Lesotho, May 2002: adapting to MMP - Fox, R.; Southall, R.
These reforms were matched by negotiations between the parties about adopting a new electoral system.

144. The ultrastructure and computer-enhanced digital image analysis of plasmodesmata at the Kranz mesophyll-bundle sheath interface of Themeda triandra var. imberbis (Retz) A. Camus in conventionally-fixed leaf blades. - Botha, C.E.J.; Hartley, B.J.; Cross, R.H.M.
The electron-dense particles are between 2.5 and 3.0nm in diameter.

145. A generic database and spatial interface for the application of hydrological and water resource models - Hughes, D.A.; Forsyth, D.A
The structure and components of the system are briefly described and some example applications provided.

146. Valuation of communal area livestock benefits, rural livelihoods and related policy issues - Dovie, D.B.K.; Shackleton, C.M.; Witkowski, E.T.F.
The multiple benefits from livestock production to rural households are evaluated in Thorndale, a communal area of the Limpopo Province South Africa.

147. Effect of concentration and degree of saturation of topical fluocinonide formulations on in vitro membrane transport and in vivo availability on human skin - Schwarb, F.P.; Imanidis, G.; Smith, E.W.; Haigh, J.M.; Surber, C.
The thermodynamic acitvity of drugs in topical vehicles is considered to significantly influence topical delivery.

148. Spatio-temporal patterns in maturation of the chokka squid (Loligo vulgaris reynaudii) off the coast of South Africa - Olyott, L.J.H.; Sauer, W.H.H.; Booth, A.J.
Knowledge of the temporal and spatial characteristics of chokka squid (Loligo vulgaris reynaudii) biology in South African waters is limited, so the possibility of there being a geographically fragmented stock was examined by investigating the distribution of maturity patterns for the species, covering all known spawning areas and using both historical and recent data.

149. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, tolmetin and sulindac, inhibit liver tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase activity and alter brain neurotransmitter levels - Dairam, A.; Antunes, E.M.; Saravanan, K.S.; Daya, S.
In this study, we determined the effect of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, tolmetin and sulindac, on rat liver TDO activity and the subsequent changes in the hippocampal and striatal neurotransmitter levels.

150. The effect of sulfide on ?-glucosidases: Implications for starch degradation in anaerobic bioreactors - Watson, S.D.; Pletschke, B.I.
Membrane associated ?-glucosidase activity was investigated in a methanogenic bioreactor (MR) and a biosulfidogenic bioreactor (SR).

151. A continuous process for the biological treatment of heavy metal contaminated acid mine water - Van Hille, R.P.; Boshoff, G.A.; Rose, P.D.; Duncan, J.R.
Alkaline precipitation of heavy metals from acidic water streams is a popular and long standing treatment process.

152. Evaluation of kinetic parameters of traps in thermoluminescence phosphors - Ogundare, F.O.; Balogun, F.A.; Hussain, L.A.
A method for evaluating trap depth E, order of kinetics b and frequency factor s from a thermoluminescence (TL) glow peak has been developed.

153. Preferential electrosorption of cobalt (II) tetra-aminophthalocyanine at single-wall carbon nanotubes immobilized on a basal plane pyrolytic graphite electrode - Ozoemena, K.I.; Pillay, J.; Nyokong, T.
This communication describes the preferential electrosorption of cobalt (II) tetra-aminophthalocyanine (CoTAPc) (rather than the expected electropolymerisation) onto a SWCNT immobilized on a basal plane pyrolytic graphite electrode (BPPGE).

154. A Trypanosoma cruzi heat shock protein 40 is able to stimulate the adenosine triphosphate hydrolysis activity of heat shock protein 70 and can substitute for a yeast heat shock protein 40 - Edkins, A.L.; Ludewig, M.H.; Blatch, G.L.
The process of assisted protein folding, characteristic of members of the heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) and heat shock protein 40 (Hsp40) molecular chaperone families, is important for maintaining the structural integrity of cellular protein machinery under normal and stressful conditions.

155. Evaluation of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner as an alternative control of small hive beetles, Aethina tumida Murray (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) - Buchholz, S.; Neumann, P.; Neumann, K.; Hepburn, H.R.
Small hive beetles, Aethina tumida Murray, are parasites and scavengers of honeybee colonies, Apis mellifera L., and have become an invasive species that can cause considerable damage in its new distribution areas.

156. Sperm morphology in five species of cicadettine cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadomorpha: Cicadidae) - Chawanji, A.S.; Hodgson, A.N.; Villet, M.H.
The acrosome is flattened anteriorly; posteriorly it extends along either side of the nucleus as two tubular processes that gradually decrease in diameter.
