Spatio-temporal patterns in maturation of the chokka squid (Loligo vulgaris reynaudii) off the coast of South Africa
- Olyott, L.J.H.; Sauer, W.H.H.; Booth, A.J.
Knowledge of the temporal and spatial characteristics of chokka squid (Loligo vulgaris reynaudii) biology in South African waters is limited, so the possibility of there being a geographically fragmented stock was examined by investigating the distribution of maturity patterns for the species, covering all known spawning areas and using both historical and recent data.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, tolmetin and sulindac, inhibit liver tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase activity and alter brain neurotransmitter levels
- Dairam, A.; Antunes, E.M.; Saravanan, K.S.; Daya, S.
In this study, we determined the effect of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, tolmetin and sulindac, on rat liver TDO activity and the subsequent changes in the hippocampal and striatal neurotransmitter levels.

The effect of sulfide on ?-glucosidases: Implications for starch degradation in anaerobic bioreactors
- Watson, S.D.; Pletschke, B.I.
Membrane associated ?-glucosidase activity was investigated in a methanogenic bioreactor (MR) and a biosulfidogenic bioreactor (SR).

A continuous process for the biological treatment of heavy metal contaminated acid mine water
- Van Hille, R.P.; Boshoff, G.A.; Rose, P.D.; Duncan, J.R.
Alkaline precipitation of heavy metals from acidic water streams is a popular and long standing treatment process.
146.
Evaluation of kinetic parameters of traps in thermoluminescence phosphors
- Ogundare, F.O.; Balogun, F.A.; Hussain, L.A.
A method for evaluating trap depth E, order of kinetics b and frequency factor s from a thermoluminescence (TL) glow peak has been developed.

Preferential electrosorption of cobalt (II) tetra-aminophthalocyanine at single-wall carbon nanotubes immobilized on a basal plane pyrolytic graphite electrode
- Ozoemena, K.I.; Pillay, J.; Nyokong, T.
This communication describes the preferential electrosorption of cobalt (II) tetra-aminophthalocyanine (CoTAPc) (rather than the expected electropolymerisation) onto a SWCNT immobilized on a basal plane pyrolytic graphite electrode (BPPGE).

A Trypanosoma cruzi heat shock protein 40 is able to stimulate the adenosine triphosphate hydrolysis activity of heat shock protein 70 and can substitute for a yeast heat shock protein 40
- Edkins, A.L.; Ludewig, M.H.; Blatch, G.L.
The process of assisted protein folding, characteristic of members of the heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) and heat shock protein 40 (Hsp40) molecular chaperone families, is important for maintaining the structural integrity of cellular protein machinery under normal and stressful conditions.
149.
Evaluation of Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner as an alternative control of small hive beetles, Aethina tumida Murray (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae)
- Buchholz, S.; Neumann, P.; Neumann, K.; Hepburn, H.R.
Small hive beetles, Aethina tumida Murray, are parasites and scavengers of honeybee colonies, Apis mellifera L., and have become an invasive species that can cause considerable damage in its new distribution areas.
150.
Sperm morphology in five species of cicadettine cicadas (Hemiptera: Cicadomorpha: Cicadidae)
- Chawanji, A.S.; Hodgson, A.N.; Villet, M.H.
The acrosome is flattened anteriorly; posteriorly it extends along either side of the nucleus as two tubular processes that gradually decrease in diameter.
151.
A preliminary report on the age and significance of Quaternary lacustrine deposits at Birnam, north-east Cape Province, South Africa
- Hanvey, P.M.; Lewis, C.A.
A study has been undertaken on a sedimentary sequence exposed by fluvial incision on the outer bend of the River Bokspruit, at an altitude of 1850 m.
152.
Palaeoclimatic and archaeological implications of organic- rich sediments at Tiffindell Ski Resort, near Rhodes, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa
- Rosen, D.Z.; Lewis, C.A.; Illgner, P.M.
This correlates well with the moister conditions known to have existed in the north eastern uplands of Eastern Cape Province (and in upland eastern Lesotho) in the later as compared with the earlier part of the Holocene.

Stuffed birds on trees: an historical review of avian systematics in southern Africa
- Craig, A.F.J.K.
Avian systematics in southern Africa has been heavily dependent on a small number of museum-based specialists.
154.
The development of a geomorphological classification system for the longitudinal zonation of South African rivers
- Rowntree, K.M.; Wadeson, R.A.; O'Keeffe, J.
The recognition of the Reserve by the new South African Water Law poses new challenges for river scientists.

Controls on channel form and channel change in the Bell River, Eastern Cape, South Africa
- Rowntree, K.M.; Dollar, E.S.J.
Channel instability has occurred in the Bell River in the form of meander cutoffs, incipient meander cutoffs, and general channel instability.

Rainfall characteristics, rainfall reliability and the definition of drought : Baringo district, Kenya
- Rowntree, K.M.
Monthly rainfall data for Kabarnet District Office, together with comments taken from the Baringo District Annual Report, are used here to examine the relationship between rainfall characteristics and agricultural drought experienced over the period 1915 to 1943 in order to establish the meteorological criteria for a definition of drought applicable to the former Kerio Native Land Unit, Baringo District, Kenya.
