Using the manned submersible Jago, the habits, distribution and number of coelacanths within all main submarine canyons of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park were studied during 47 survey dives, with a total bottom time of 166 hours at depths ranging from 46 to 359 m, between 2002 and 2004.

182. Automated estimation and analyses of meteorological drought characteristics from monthly rainfall data - Smakhtin, V.U.; Hughes, D.A.
They include the Decile Index (DI), the Effective Drought Index (EDI), the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and deviations from the long-term mean and median value.

183. A dinocephalian therapsid fauna on the Ecca–Beaufort contact in Eastern Cape Province, South Africa - Modesto, S.P.; Rubidge, B.S.; De Klerk, W.J.; Welman, J.
Systematic exploration of outcrops of the lowermost Beaufort Group for fossils of the oldest terrestrial vertebrates of South Africa, known only from the Permian age Eodicynodon Assemblage Zone in Western Cape Province, has resulted in the discovery of a therapsid fauna in Eastern Cape Province that is dominated by advanced dinocephalians.

184. Studying the impact of ocean eddies on the ecosystem of the Prince Edward Islands: DEIMEC ll - Pakhomov, E.A.; Ansorge, I.J.; Kaehler, S.; Vumazonke, L.U.; Gulekana, K.; Bushula, T.; Balt, C.; Paul, D.; Hargey, N.; Stewart, H.; Chang, N.; Furno, L.; Mkatshwa, S.; Visser, C.; Lutjeharms, J.R.E.; Hayes-Foley, P.
This island group consists of two small volcanic islands and provides many opportunities for studying ecological and evolutionary processes, for monitoring ecological changes in relation to global climate change and for conserving a unique component of the planet’s biological diversity.

185. Effect of water temperature on the biogeography of South African estuarine fishes associated with the subtropical/warm temperate subtraction zone. - Maree, R.C.; Booth, A.J.; Whitfield, A.K.
Qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted upon the ichthyofaunal assemblages to determine whether the location of the subtropical/warm temperate boundary corresponds to that proposed by Whitfield.(n1) Analyses included the distribution ranges of species associated with estuaries according to presence/absence data, cluster analysis of gill net catches in eight estuaries along the southeastern coast and the relative proportion of tropical to temperate marine species within these eight systems.

186. Changes in fuelwood use and selection following electrification in the Bushbuckridge lowveld, South Africa - Madubansi, M.; Shackleton, C.M.
Fuelwood is the primary energy source for domestic purposes throughout the developing world, in both urban and rural environments.

187. Electrochemical characterisation of tetra- and octa-substituted oxo(phthalocyaninato)titanium(IV) complexes - Tau, P.; Nyokong, T.
The first two reductions are metal-based processes, confirmed by spectroelectrochemistry to be due to Ti[superscript IV]Pc[superscript 2?]/Ti[superscript III]Pc[superscript 2?] and Ti[superscript III]Pc[superscript 2?]/Ti[superscript II]Pc[superscript 2?] redox processes and the last two reductions are ring-based processes due to Ti[superscript II]Pc[superscript 2?]/Ti[superscript II]Pc[superscript 3?] and Ti[superscript II]Pc[superscript 3?]/Ti[superscript II]Pc[superscript 4?].

188. Palynology and palaeo-environment of Pleistocene hyaena coprolites from an open-air site at Oyster Bay, Eastern Cape coast, South Africa. - Carrion, J.S.; Brink, J.S.; Scott, L.; Binneman, J.N.F.
Pollen assemblages in the coprolites were dominated by Myrica and, to a lesser extent, Stoebe-Elytropappus type and Poaceae.

189. The third Marion Island oceanographic study (MIOS III) conducted during April and May 1998. - Froneman, P.W.; Ansorge, I.J.
Focuses on the third Marion Island Oceanographic Study (MIOS III).

190. Re-examining ‘professionalism’ in pharmacy: a South African perspective - Williams, K.F.
Although defining itself as a patient-centred profession, private sector (community and private hospital) pharmacy often appears to be that of a product-for-profit centred occupation.

191. Medicine labels incorporating pictograms: do they influence understanding and adherence? - Dowse, R.; Ehlers, M.
The objective was to determine the influence of medicine labels incorporating pictograms on the understanding of instructions and on adherence.

192. Medicines information and adherence in HIV/AIDS patients - Mansoor, L.E.; Dowse, R.
The impact of providing such information on adherence to therapy is reportedly unpredictable.

193. Comparison of structural damage caused by Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia) and Bird cherry-oat aphid (Rhopalosiphum padi) in a susceptible barley cultivar, Hordeum vulgare cv. Clipper - Saheed, S.A.; Botha, C.E.J.; Liu, L.; Jonsson, L.
The Russian wheat aphid (RWA, (Diuraphis noxia) and the Bird cherry-oat aphid (BCA, (Rhopalosiphum padi L.) cause severe damage to grain crops, including barley.

194. Prince Edward Islands' offshore oceanographic study: report of research cruise April-May 1997 - Pakhomov, E.A.; Froneman, P.W.; Ansorge, I.
Focuses on the preliminary results of the second cruise of the Marion Island Oceanographic Study designed to provide oceanological observations off Prince Edward Islands from April 25 to May 28, 1997.

195. Paedophagia among cichlid fishes of Lake Victoria and Lake Malawi/Nyasa. - Ribbink, A.J.; Ribbink, A.C.
Paedophages, as defined here, are cichlids which exploit the protective tactics of other cichlids to steal the offspring from them.

196. Patterns of sexual size dimorphism in African cichlid fishes. - Erlandsson, A.; Ribbink, A.J.
Disappointingly few authors published such measurements, so the data are fewer than anticipated given that the cichlids are such a species-rich group.

197. The evaluation of pharmaceutical pictograms in a low-literate South African population - Dowse, R.; Ehlers, M.
Twenty three pictograms from the USP-DI and a corresponding set of 23 locally developed, culturally sensitive pictograms for conveying medication instructions were evaluated in 46 Xhosa respondents who had attended school for a maximum of 7 years.

198. Design and evaluation of a new pharmaceutical pictogram sequence to convey medicine usage - Mansoor, L.E.; Dowse, R.
The objective of this study was to design, develop and evaluate a simple and culturally appropriate pictogram sequence for using nystatin suspension, and to assess its understandability in low-literate Xhosa participants.
