This article focuses on Fedor Ruppeldt's arguments concerning the "capital city" of Slovakia, which he wrote and published in several articles during the inter-war period. Through analyses of them, the author describes Ruppeldt's notion of Slovak national culture and the territory of Slovakia, and compares it with the opinions of other Slovak intellectuals. Before 1918, in the Kingdom of Hungary, Slovakia did not form an administrative unit, and it also lacked its own political-administrative center. This situation changed after the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic and the incorporation of Slovakia into the new nation-state of Czechs and Slovaks. In February...
This article aims to analyze the forest policy of the Habsburg government. Bosnia-Herzegovina was mainly agricultural land under the Habsburg monarchy. According to the census in 1910, about 88 percent of the inhabitants were engaged in agriculture. In addition, the surface area of Bosnia-Herzegovina was 51,155 square kilometers of which more than half was forest. Negatively evaluating the governance of the Habsburg authorities in Bosnia-Herzegovina in general, historiography considers its agricultural policy a particular failure. Although the forest (including the pasture) was essential for the annual revenue of Bosnia-Herzegovina and for the farm management and livestock breeding of the peasant...
The Russian Zionist movement and the Bund (Jewish Labor Union) were rivals in Jewish politics in the Russian Empire. While they both attempted to improve the status of Jews within the Empire by participating in the Russian political arena, an important difference resided in the Zionists' insistence on the need for a territory for Jews. On the surface, the cause of this difference seems evident: the Zionists conceived of the system of nation-state, whereas the Bundists considered a multi-national statehood, in which Jews would play a part. In this respect, it is well known that the Bundists referred to the...
Пример (1) показывает, как она выглядит: (1) òn to dostôł (òd / przez / bez ni) przëdzelóné. (букв. ≪он это получил от нее распределенное≫) (2) òna mù to przëdzelëła. (она ему это распределила) (3)...
This paper attempts to demonstrate Bruno Schulz (1892-1942)'s, a Polish writer and artist, specific view of a book as the topos integrating image and text, by discussing Schulz's illustrations in Sanatorium under the Sign of the Hourglass (1937) and the cliché-verre series titled The Idolatrous Book (1920-22, 1924). The discussions of Schulz's works have generally centered on his prose and developed separately in the fields of art and literary criticism. By focusing on the forgotten fact that he felt great interest in illustrating books, this paper reconsiders Schulz's two books in the triangular relationship between image, text, and book. The...
