  1. Development and psychometric properties of the community integration scale of adults with psychiatric disorders

Cabral, Joana Moura; Carvalho, Célia; Motta, Carolina; Silva, Osvaldo
The goal of the current study was to develop and validate the Community Integration Scale for adults with Psychiatric Problems (CISAPP), based on a multidimensional model of community integration. The three-dimensional structure (including physical, psychological, and social dimensions) and validity of CIS-APP was studied in a sample of 183 psychiatric patients from the Azores Islands-Portugal. Confirmatory Factor Analysis has led to the choice of a two-factor with a second order factor solution. Results showed that the CIS-APP is a measure with good psychometric properties, with very good internal consistency and alidity, and with relevant applicability in both clinical and research...

Caldeira, Suzana Nunes; Silva, Osvaldo; Mendes, Maria; Botelho, Susana P.; Martins, Maria J.
The initiation rituals that freshmen are subjected to in universities have been characterized quite differently, although the most frequent view is that it is a rough experience for those coming to higher education for the first time. Gender has emerged as a differentiating variable of how students experience this practice. In this study, our interest is to find out the perceptions of university students over the events that take place during the entry to higher education through a comparative gender analysis. The sample included247 students of both genders. Data were collected by means of the scale 'Evaluation of Bullying Situations...

Paranoid ideation is a common thought process that constitutes a defense against perceived social threats. The current study aimed at the characterization of paranoid ideation in youths and to explore the possible predictors involved in the development of paranoid ideations. Paranoid ideation, shame, submission, early childhood memories and current depressive, anxious and stress symptomatology were assessed in a sample of 1516 Portuguese youths. Higher frequencies of paranoid ideation were observed, particularly in females and youths from lower socioeconomic status. The main predictors identified relates to submissive behaviors and adverse childhood experiences, and especially to shame feelings. The current study emphasizes...

Bauer, Raposo Benjamin Yvo; Nunes, Caldeira Suzana; Martins, Maria J.; Mendes, Maria; Botelho, Susana P.; Silva, Osvaldo
Not a year goes by that we don't hear of another hazing scandal in a higher education institution. Many researchers took interest in this issue in order to understand its causes and consequences. They provided definitions and lead to prevent it. We found hazing in many social groups around the world, with different names, and under specific forms. This paper aims to better understand hazing and its actors, with a specific focus on hazing in higher education. We presented three definitions to offer several perspectives on hazing, and facilitate its apprehension. Our method was to analyze the relevant scientific literature...

Fernandes, Hélder Manuel Rego; Caldeira, Suzana Nunes; Veiga, Feliciano Henriques

The aim of the current study was to validate the General Paranoia Scale for Portuguese Adolescents population (GPS-A). This scale assesses the paranoid ideation in non-clinical population. Results from a confirmatory factor analysis of the scale on 1218 youths confirmed an alternative model to the one-dimensional model proposed by Fenigstein and Vanable (1992) comprising three different dimensions (Mistrust thoughts, persecutory ideas and depreciation). This alternative model presented a good fit: χ2 (162)= 727.200, p = .000; CFI = .925; RMSEA = .054, P(rmsea ≤0.05) = .000; PCFI = .788; AIC = 863.200. All items presented adequate factor loadings (λij ≥0.5)...

  15. Mapping non-suicidal self-injury in adolescence: Development and confirmatory factor analysis of the impulse, self-harm and sucidal ideation questionnaire for adolescents (ISSIQ-A)

Carvalho, Célia; Nunes, Carolina; Castilho, Paula; da Motta, Carolina; Caldeira, Suzana Nunes; Pinto-Gouveia, José
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is the deliberate, self-inflicted destruction of body tissue without suicidal intent and an important clinical phenomenon. Rates of NSSI appear to be disproportionately high in adolescents and young adults, and is a risk factor for suicidal ideation and behavior. The present study reports the psychometric properties of the Impulse, Self-harm and Suicide Ideation Questionnaire for Adolescents (ISSIQ-A), a measure designed to comprehensively assess the impulsivity, NSSI behaviors and suicide ideation. An additional module of this questionnaire assesses the functions of NSSI. Results of Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) of the scale on 1722 youths showed items' suitability and...

  16. Paranoia in the General Population : a revised version of the General Paranoia Scale for Adults

Carvalho, Célia; Sousa, Marina; da Motta, Carolina; Pinto-Gouveia, José; Caldeira, Suzana Nunes; Peixoto, Ermelindo Bernardo; Cabral, Joana Moura; Fenigstein, Allan
Background: Paranoid ideation has been regarded as a cognitive and a social process used as a defence against perceived threats. According to this perspective, paranoid ideation can be understood as a process extending across the normal-pathological continuum. Methods: In order to refine the construct of paranoid ideation and to validate a measure of paranoia, 906 Portuguese participants from the general population and 91 patients were administered the General Paranoia Scale (GPS), and two conceptual models (one - and tridimensional) were compared through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Results: Results from the CFA of the GPS confirmed a different model than the one-dimensional model...

  17. Hazing practices in higher education : a study with portuguese students

Caldeira, Suzana Nunes; Silva, Osvaldo; Mendes, Maria; Botelho, Susana P.
Hazing practices in higher education institutions are perceived controversially. This study looked at the perception towards hazing practices of students from the University of the Azores in first cycle (n=247). It analyses if their perception was positive, emphasizing the integrative aspects of hazing practices, or if it was negative, inclining to define those practises like being violent and humiliating. The applied questionnaire measures 3 factors to define individual’s perception with hazing practices (positive relation with hazing practices, negative relation and the social dimension of the practices). This study used descriptive analyses to observe the level of agreement with hazing practices...
