  1. ABSTRACTS OF THE GIORNATE DI CONIGLICOLTURA ASIC 2009, FORLÌ, ITALY, APRIL 2-3, 2009

    World Rabbit Science
[EN] The third edition of the Giornate di Coniglicoltura ASIC 2009 (Italian Rabbit Days), product of the collaboration between ASIC (Italian Rabbit Scientific Association), Avitalia (Italian Poultry and Rabbit Producers Association), ASPA (Animal Production Scientific Association) and Forlì Fair was held in Forlì at 2-3 April 2009. The first day of the congress was focused on a Round Table entitled Biosecurity and welfare in rabbit farming . During the second day it were presented three main lectures: Possibilities to reduce the feed conversion in rabbit production by L. Maertens, Role of type of fibre on intestinal microbiota and performance in...

  2. ABSTRACTS OF 3rd INTERNATIONAL MEETING ON RABBIT BIOTECHNOLOGY: XI'AN, CHINA, JUNE 2009.

    World Rabbit Science
[EN] As many of you have known, the investigations of biological functions of genes and proteins and their relationship with the pathogenesis of human diseases requires appropriate and relevant animal models. Although mice (wild and genetically modified) offer many possibilities, other non-murine species are required in many studies. Rabbit is one of these species. Rabbit is genetically and physiologically close to humans and has been extensively used in many aspects of biological studies and medical researches. During the last decade, many progresses in rabbit biotechnology including rabbit cloning, rabbit ES cells, and rabbit genome have been achieved and a specific...

  3. Comparison of semen characteristics and histological structure of the testis from transgenic and non-transgenic rabbits

    Lukac, N.; Massanyi, P.; Flesarova, S.; Danko, J.; Makarevich, A.V.; Chrenek, P.
[EN] The aim of this study was to compare semen characteristics including sperm quantity, quality, and abnormalities, as well as histological structure of the testis of three-year old transgenic (human clotting factor, hFVIII, gene) and nontransgenic rabbits. For the experiment, 10 transgenic rabbits of F2 and F3 generations and 10 randomly selected non-transgenic males of the same breed and age were used as controls. All males were housed in individual cages, under a the same environmental conditions: photoperiod (14L:10D), temperature (18-20°C), and humidity (65-70%). Semen samples, collected once a week for 20 wk from each control and transgenic male, were...

  4. In vitro effects of tyre debris organic extract on the kinetic and morphologic traits of rabbit spermatozoa

    Moretti, E.; Dal Bosco, A.; Mourvaki, E.; Cardinali, R.; Collodel, G.; Geminiani, M.; Cetta, F.; Giannerini, V.; Castellini, C.
[EN] The present study aims at evaluating the effects of the organic extract of tyre debris (TDOE) from tyre wear on the kinetic and morphologic features of rabbit spermatozoa. Rabbit sperm were incubated for 4 h with 0, 5, 10, 50 and 75 ¿g/mL of TDOE. Sperm motility was evaluated by computer-assisted semen analysis. Phosphatidilcholine (PS) externalization (apoptosis) and plasma membrane breakage (necrosis) were assessed using the annexinV/propidium iodide assay. The sperm ultrastructure was observed by scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A relevant decrease in the motility rate, PS externalization, and in plasma membrane breakage of spermatozoa were...

  5. Quality of meat and selenium content in tissues of rabbits fed diets supplemented with sodium selenite, selenized yeast and selenized algae

    Marounek, M.; Dokoupilová, A.; Volek, Z.; Hoza, I.
[EN] Forty rabbits weaned at 35 d of age were randomly assigned to 4 groups of 10 rabbits each. The rabbits were fed a basal granulated diet containing 0.08 mg Se/kg, or diets obtained from basal diet, supplemented with sodium selenite, selenized yeast (Se-yeast) or selenized algae Chlorella (Se-algae) to increase the Se concentration to 0.40 mg/kg. After 6 weeks rabbits were slaughtered at 77 d of age. Samples of meat, liver and hair were analyzed. The Se supplements did not influence rabbit growth, feed intake and weight loss during cooling. The nutrient composition of meat (dry matter, protein and...

  6. Influence of age at weaning and nutritive value of weaning diet on growth performance and caecal traits in rabbits

    Cesari, V.; Grilli, G.; Ferrazzi, V.; Toschi, I.
[EN] To investigate the relationship between dietary nutrient concentration and weaning age on growth performance and caecal characteristics of rabbits, a trial was carried out on 64 litters (eight rabbits/litter) comparing two weaning ages (25 vs. 34 d) and two diets (HC: high concentrated and LC: low concentrated diet) offered to the kits from 18 to 34 d of age. At 34 d of age 54 animals per group were caged individually and all were fed the LC diet until 45 d of age. All animals were then fed a standard fattening diet (37% neutral detergent fiber, 3.4% ether extract...

  7. Inoculation and bacterial analyses of fractions obtained from the reference inoculum TEC4 which experimentally reproduces epizootic rabbit enteropathy

    Huybens, N.; Houeix, J.; Licois, D.; Mainil, J.; Marlier, D.
[EN] The aetiology of epizootic rabbit enteropathy (ERE) is still unknown despite ten years of continuous research. A putative bacterial aetiology is the basis of current research. The fractionation of the reference inoculum (TEC4) is a major step towards finding the potential bacterial agent(s). In this study, TEC4 was fractionated by different techniques: centrifugation on discontinuous sucrose gradient, cell adherence and chloroform/ethanol treatment. The different fractions were inoculated into SPF rabbits and analyzed with classical bacteriological techniques. ERE was reproduced with two of the six fractions obtained. Four species never previously cultured from TEC were identified in the process but,...
