  1. Abstracts of the XXXIV Symposium de cunicultura de ASESCU. Sevilla, Spain. 4-5 Jun, 2009.

[EN] The annual Congress of the Spanish Association of Cuniculture (ASESCU) was held in Calahorra (La Rioja) on 30-31st October of 2008. The 33th edition was devoted to study different strategies to enhance the farm profitability. The high increment in the feeding and the low price of the meat has been the main responsible of the decrease in the profitability in the last 2 years. Different possibilities to reduce the feed conversion ratio (FCR) both in fatteners and females were discussed in two sessions. Furthermore, a total of 15 communications were presented in 5 working sessions: Meat quality in commercial...

  2. Abstracts of the "21st Hungary conference on rabbit production" Kaposvár, Hungary. May 27, 2009.

[EN] About 90 participants took part at the 21st Hungarian Conference on Rabbit Production at Kaposvár, organized by the University of Kaposvár, the Hungarian Branch of the WRSA, the Rabbit Production Board and the Agribrands Europe Hungary Inc. This is the largest and most popular event of the rabbit breeders in Hungary. 12 papers were presented by senior and young scientists. The topic of the papers covered some fi elds of rabbit production (production, housing and welfare, reproduction, genetics, nutrition). Full papers are available from the organizer ( on request.

  3. Short communication: Mutual olfactory relationships in rabbits raised in individual cages

    Negretti, P.; Bianconi, G.; Finzi, A.
[EN] A set of three contiguous cages was utilised to test the possibility that rabbits establish sniffing relationships when housed in contiguous cages as occurs on farms. The single cages were separated by a tin divider slide in which very small holes were made. This system allows the smell to be sensed while a visual relationship was not possible. The experimental set was then located in an open air shed under a roof with no walls, in order to allow olfactory stimuli and to make it possible to perceive its direction and possibly its origin. This set-up avoided the odours...

  4. Genetic trend in selection for litter weight in two maternal lines of rabbits in Egypt

    Abou Khadiga, G.; Youssef, Y.M.K.; Saleh, K.; Nofal, R.Y.; Baselga, M.
[EN] An analysis was carried out to evaluate the results of the selection program of a new synthetic maternal line of Egyptian APRI rabbits and the Spanish V line. The selection criterion was litter weaning weight in both lines based on Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) estimations under a repeatability animal model. The studied traits were: litter birth weight, litter weaning weight (at 28 d) and pre-weaning litter gain. Heritability estimates were generally low (0.09 to 0.11) and comparable in both lines. Low to moderate estimates of repeatability were observed for all studied traits (0.15 to 0.31). Estimates of genetic...

  5. Nutritive value of sun-dried grape pomace, incorporated at a low level in complete feed for the rabbit bred under Magrebian conditions

    Guemour, D.; Bannelier, C.; Dellal, A.; Gidenne, T.
[EN] The nutritive value and potential use of sun-dried grape pomace (g/kg as fed: 140 of crude protein (CP), 529 of neutral detergent fi bre (NDF), 460 acid detergent fi bre , 293 acid detergent lignin) for fattening rabbits was studied by comparing 3 experimental diets containing a low but increasing incorporation rate of grape pomace (GP): 0% (control, GP0), 3% (GP3), and 6% (GP6) in substitution to the control diet (251 g NDF and 175 g CP/kg) formulated with raw materials available in the area of Tiaret (Algeria): barley, wheat bran and straw, soybean meal and faba bean. Three...

  6. Effect of mannan oligosaccharides on rabbit performance, digestibility and rectal Bacterial anaerobic populations during an episode of epizootic rabbit enteropathy

    Bovera, F.; Nizza, A.; Marono, S.; Mallardo, K.; Piccolo, G.; Tudisco, R.; De Martino, L.; Nizza, S.
[EN] The effect of three levels of mannan oligosaccharides (MOS at 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 g/kg diet) compared to dietary antibiotic supplementation (ANT, colistin sulphate 144, tylosin 100 and oxytetracycline 1000 ppm) and to a diet without MOS or medication (control group) were studied on 5 groups of rabbits (n=342 cages/group and 2 rabbits/cage) from weaning (35 d) to 60 d of age in a farm with an anamnestic history of Epizootic Rabbit Enteropathy (ERE). Mortality rate was recorded daily. Thirty two cages per group were randomly chosen to record growth performance and rectal anaerobic microbial population. Live weight and...

  7. In vitro fermentation of different commercially available pectins using inoculum from rabbit caecum

    Kermauner, A.; Lavrencic, A.
[EN] In vitro gas production kinetics of eight different commercially available pectin isolates from apple (4), citrus (2) and sugar beet (2), with a degree of methyl esterification (DMet) ranging from 9 to 73%, were determined twice using the mixture of caecum contents of two rabbits of 78 d of age per repetition as inoculum. The cumulated gas production over 60 h of incubation was modelled with the Gompertz model and the estimated and calculated kinetic parameters of each substrate compared. Total potential gas production (B), gas production till 10 h of incubation, maximum fermentation rate (MFR) and time of...
