  1. Fertility control in a male rabbit using a deslorelin implant. A case report

    Arlt, S.; Spankowski, S.; Kaufmann, T.; Kostelnik, K.; Heuwieser, W.
[EN] Continuous low-dose release of the GnRH analogue deslorelin (Suprelorin, Peptech, Australia) causes a suppression of reproductive function in different species such as dogs, koalas, or kangaroos. No studies concerning the efficacy and safety in male rabbits have yet been conducted. A male rabbit with hypospadia was introduced to the Clinic for Animal Reproduction. The owner intended to keep it together with a fertile female rabbit. To avoid reproduction, a 4.7 mg deslorelin implant was injected subcutaneously. No negative reaction to implant placement was diagnosed by daily examination of the injection site for one week. To test the effectiveness of...

  2. Comparison of the effects of two anaesthetic combinations in rabbits on some neutrophil functions in vitro

    Wessely-Szponder, J.; Szponder, T.
[EN] Tissue injury during surgery as well as anaesthesia can lead to modulation of neutrophil function. The aim of this study was to assess how two types of anaesthesia, i.e. combination of ketamine/midazolam/propofol (Group I) and ketamine/propofol (Group II) influenced neutrophil function during and 24 h after operation in rabbits. Blood samples were taken prior to anaesthesia, at 30 and 60 min, and 24 h after starting the experiment. At these time points, degranulation and free radical generation were assessed in both groups. After 30 min of anaesthesia, we observed a decrease in elastase release from 50.96±0.71% to 26.52±4.85% in...

  3. General topic: applications of transgenic rabbits in biomedical research - based on literature search

    Zhao, S.; Wei, K.; Yu, Q.; Li, Y.; Cheng, F.; Wang, Y.; Yang, P.; Fan, J.; Liu, E.
[EN]Transgenic rabbits are widely used as a model organism for biomedical research, and the transgenic rabbit system is especially valuable because it fills an important niche between laboratory mice and larger domesticated mammals. In order to describe the current status and development trends of the use of transgenic rabbits in biomedical research precisely, we performed a quantitative analysis of the published data, collected by searching biomedical databases. Currently, there are about 217 papers related to transgenic rabbits, originating from 22 countries. The number of publications has slowly increased over time, reaching its peak in 2004 and 2007. Approximately one third...

  4. Flushing or doe relocation as biostimulation methods for improvement of sexual behaviour and performance of multiparous rabbit doe after a summer resting period

    Manal, A. F.
[EN] A study was conducted to clarify the influence of flushing or doe relocation as biostimulation methods on oestrus response and subsequent performance on thirty NZW multiparous 10-11-month-old rabbit does after a two-month resting period in summer. After weaning of their last litter in June, the does were not re-mated and were fed a 100 g daily ration till September, the end of resting period. Then the does were randomly allocated to three groups (10 does/group): a control group (C) in which does remated without oestrus synchronisation, a relocated group (R) and a flushed group (F). Relocation consisted of moving...

  5. Development of hierarchy and rank effects in weaned growing rabbits (oryctolagus cuniculus)

    Vervaecke, H.; De Bonte, L.; Maertens, L.; Tuyttens, F.; Stevens, J.M.G.; Lips, D.
[EN] Aggression among growing rabbits reduces production efficiency, and negatively affects the animal s welfare. Understanding hierarchy development may improve its predictive value with regard to differential access to resources and fitness. This could in turn lead to measures to reduce aggression. This study quantifies the development of a hierarchy among small groups of same-age rabbits kept in high density. We describe the development of the hierarchy in four mixed-sex groups formed after weaning at four weeks of age. The relationships between rank and aggressiveness, weight, sex and wound count were examined. To balance possible genetic effects, each group contained...

  6. Study on the nutrient adequacy of feeds for pet rabbits available in the Italian market

    Ricci, R.; Sartori, A.; Palagiano, C.; Dalle Zotte, A.
[EN] This study was carried out to determine the proximate composition and nutritional adequacy of six complete commercial feeds for pet rabbits available in the Italian market. Wide variability was observed in the chemical composition of the complete feeds selected. Two feeds exceeded crude protein recommended level (172 g/kg and 182 g/kg), whereas 50% of the diets selected did not meet the minimal crude fibre requirements of 130 g/kg. The estimated digestible energy (DE) showed an oversupply in five feeds, attributable to high starch content (from 195 to 380 g/kg) in four of them. Fat levels resulted adequate in all...

  7. Effect of inulin supplementation and age on growth performance and digestive physiological parameters in weaned rabbits

Bónai, A.; Szendró, Zs.; Matics, Zs.; Fébel, H.; Kametler, L.; Tornyos, G.; Horn, P.; Kovács, F.; Kovács, M.
[EN] Three diets were formulated, a control diet (C, 40.7% NDF, 15.1% CP), the same diet but medicated (M, 500 mg/kg oxytetracycline and 50 mg/kg thiamulin), and a third diet obtained substituting 4% of barley with inulin (Frutafi t) in C diet (I). Pannon White does and their litters were randomly allocated into three groups (8/group) at 21 d of lactation and diets offered to the does and kids from 21 d of lactation onwards. After weaning (28 d), growing rabbits (30 cages/ treatment, 2 rabbits/cage) were fed the same diet as before weaning. At 28, 35 and 42 d...
